Make my piano look nicer!

Fori

I'd like to improve the appearance of the top of this 1930s
piano and maybe protect it a bit. It is an odd style that resembles a
buffet when closed and it looks like it's been used that way. The finish
seems unaffected by denatured alcohol so I'm guessing it's not shellac.
Anyone know what was common on pianos in the '30s? (This was not a high
end piano, although I'm not sure what counts as high end for ~1937.)

This is the side, which is in fine shape. The finish is crackled but is still glossy and nobody has spilled on it.

I
would like, however, to protect the top more. Any suggestions on what I
could put on this? I don't want to refinish it; theoretically I could
remove the top and refinish it alone, but I don't think I could match
it. I know wax wouldn't help with the scratches or burns, but would it
help with the dull spots? Anything else I should consider?

(Why are pianos so hard to photograph? Is it because they're so shiny?)

Thanks for any suggestions!
