Boo Hoo My Washer Is Unwell

Today I was doing a load of whites and after a minute or two I realized I couldn't hear the machine turning. When I got close enough I realized the motor was turning but the drum was not. Boo Hoo a broken machine.

The machine is a Malber P21. 20041905392-010020167-01 01 Made in Italy.

I am guessing the belt broke. It was still draining, filling, the motor sounded like it was turning and the cycle knob was turning with time. Tomorrow a friend who is a genius with all things mechanical is going to take a look. If the machine is in good shape inside I am willing to repair the machine even if cost a few hundred dollars. Though it is old and I am the second owner I like the fact that it doesn't dumb down the hot water (my building does that LOL), it uses a decent amount of water, has a mechanical timer, does three warm rinses and fits in the tiny laundry closet. If it is truly beyond saving I need a small compact front loader. I would consider the following machines: Miele, Electrolux, and the Bosch. Currently there are few Miele machines on NYC Craigslist, but I think they are asking too much for a used machine. I would like to buy used, simple because I prefer a non HE, no water machine and the three new brands I would consider are expensive.

Hoping it is an easy, not costly fix since you like and want to keep the machine. If not, I think you will LOVE the Miele or Electrolux!!

Ahh, shucks Heather..hopefully its an easy cheap fix...

Tell me what you mean by non HE ? Of the three brands you listed they are HE or am I wrong?

OMG you mean i get to get MORE insane than i am NOW??? OHHHHHH NOOOOOO!!!! i think i have finally hit that stage in life that i want another baby!! LOL but ya know, i'm fixed!! A few comments, that you may or may not find helpful. You mention "really want a F &P" but then disparage your new Frigidaire for having "the digital junk." Seems an interesting pair of comments being that Fisher & Paykel DishDrawers are fully electronic and have plastic tubs. :-) "Course looked for the shortest cycle. Pushed the 'Quick clean'" Choose a cycle appropriate for the soil level of the load. Maybe it was suitable in this case, but I've run across people who are reluctant to use heavier-duty cycles and then complain that their machine doesn't perform satisfactorily. The displayed run-time at the start of a cycle is to be considered an estimate, and may increase if the machine needs to heat the water more than is typical or has soil sensors that react to the load conditions. Some machines also do a "calibration" process on the first cycle run (and repeat it on an occasional basis) that involves more time. Your new Frigidaire is an entirely different machine from your previous Creda, and adjustments in usage habits are likely to be required.

See, I'd just tell my DH that he could enjoy the sunrise while he's doing the laundry rather than while he's making coffee! ;) I kind of like the look of latest rendition, but I'm not loving the function. Leaving the laundry in the MBR would kill it for me. I know you don't mind it, but I can't imagine that it wouldn't be a sticking point for some potential buyer down the road. It would be for me. The issue raised earlier about kids having to come in the parents' room to do their laundry as they got older would be even stickier with the addition of another bedroom--i.e., room for a second kid with laundry needs. Could your stackable W/D fit in that closet area in the mudroom? Also, how will you use this desk? Will it become your home office space? If not, it seems like it would become a clutter magnet, ruining that nice view. I still prefer the rendition above where you reuse your sink and five-panel door. I think it makes the space far more useful in a house where useful space is at a premium.

Thank you littlegreeny for the good thoughts. Yes, my hope is it is an easy fix.

MamaPinky- I do believe those machines are HE but I don't know of a new compact front loader that isn't. Therefore that leaves me with limited choices. I do plan on checking the local used appliance stores. (In NYC the historically blue collar and low income neighborhoods often have great used appliance stores). Maybe the wonderful people here know of a non-HE machine? I have seen several smaller unknown to me brands. Kind of like my Malber, imported and not widely known or serviced. Those would be a gamble, but might be worth it.

I am putting the horse before the cart. I hope to know the answer to replace or not tonight.

And I will take photos of the insides. Stay tuned.

Belts are typically a very easy fix.

Thank you dadoes. Funny thing is I already emailed them and am waiting for a response. They are located about 5 or 6 miles away from me. I hope I can find the correct parts. I am all so asking my friend to either change the pump or at least grease the bearings. It has gotten louder in the past year. I have had a 2 year old pump suddenly let go and flood my last apartment when my Whirlpool, Italian built compact machine. That machine seemed very similar to the Malber. The Malber is just older.

My machine is very ill. It wasn't the belt and my friend isn't sure what is going on. It wouldn't wash, but did rinse turn over and then stopped moving. He is going to take it home and check the relays and see if it is something in the driver board. In the meantime I am going to start shopping. I'll start a new thread on my search. Thanks everyone for all your support.

Update-My friend is taking my Malber to the hospital (workshop) tomorrow and is kindly lending me a compact front loader. Said if I like it we can just trade. That is one great friend.
