Are there any good russet or tan roses???
Comments (37)Ken, My Hot Cocoa is ownroot. It seems to have done really well so far. I bought it as a quart 3 years ago and its about 4ft tall and a bloom machine! The only problem is, I planted it too close to R. Rugosa Alba and its getting crowded out. I'm a bit of a chicken and have never tried fortuniana! I'm secretly using Susan (poorbutroserich) as my guinea pig since she's only about three hours west of me. From what I've been told, if I can get it through the first year, it should be established enough to handle our 6b/7a winters. btw....Burling has Hot Chocolate, Butterscotch, and Edith Holden in stock for April, but Julia's Rose wont be available until summer or fall (it's a budded plant in a 1g pot...but I'm assuming she buds onto Dr. Huey, and without major soil ammending, I can't grow it here well). Comments (5)Oh that is interesting about how they get to the big box stores! I never knew. It always seems so random and that explains why. I saw Julia Child at Lowe's earlier this spring and almost picked her up but didn't and when I went back they were all gone. I did manage to find a Scentimental there and also got my mom a Cherry Parfait. All roses I was surprised to find at Lowe's! After that shipment of roses all of the others I happened to see at Lowe's were Knock Outs or Flower Carpets. I'm also kicking myself for not picking up a Music Box rose I saw at a Lowe's out of town. All of the ones I mentioned were in large nursery sized pots. Congrats on your lucky find, dutchrose71! :) Andrea...See MoreNeed opinions on these roses
Comments (25)I recently visited a local nursery who has a huge selection of roses. They pruned all of them after the summer flush, but clearly haven't been watering them or caring for them otherwise since their main money-making period is over. This was a blessing in disguise, because I got to see which roses were stand-outs with marginal care at best. It's also been a very mildew-y summer here (PNW) and since the rain has moved back in, BS is back with a bang. Folklore (you guys probably get tired of hearing me talk about how much I love this rose, but I can't lie. It looked good.) Francis Meilland Rock & Roll (surprised me) Eternal Flame (yellow) Beverly Firefighter Beverly is the rose I was most taken by because it had OUTSTANDING foliage. It looked like it had just been shipped there, even though it hadn't. Nice, spot-free, dark green, dense foliage. Since it had just recently been pruned it was starting to send up some new growth, but no buds yet. I am going to go back and get one, maybe tomorrow. I have smelled Francis Meilland and it has a good, citrus-y fragrance and the blooms are..WOW. I have read that Beverly has won several fragrance awards and the blooms look gorgeous, very exhibition-y. Palatine has it. FWIW, my St. Patrick is a bloom factory, in flushes of course, and quite healthy. It's just starting to bloom again, and mine actually has a good tea fragrance, it just won't fill up a whole room if that's what you're after....See MoreSiri z8b San Juan Islands, WA
