Can you call Regan's in California? If you call and talk to someone in person... they may be able to still ship bare root. I was just there on Friday and they still had both, although they were just recently put in pulp pots. I actually got a really nice Koko Loco with about 7 canes, all spaced nicely. I'm very happy about it!

It seems to me that if you get a really nice person on the phone they may be able to take the roses out of the pulp pots and ship them bareroot. Good luck!

Thank you Cori Ann! I emailed Regan's earlier today but if I don't hear back I will call for sure. I spoke to them in January when they said they were hoping for a re-stock on Koko, but dropped the ball on keeping in touch with them.

I would try calling sooner than later. I think they're more apt to help when you call vs email. Plus the good ones go pretty fast there.

They're probabaly more apt to help you out now since it's raining like crazy here... maybe less to do there in the nursery.

Regan's may be more expensive than elsewhere, but in my opinion the roses really are worth it because they're so mature and have so many thick canes. Here's a photo of the Koko Loco I got on Friday. I picked it up, so I got the pulp pot, not bare root... but even so, compare the size to more typical size pulp pot grafted roses. It's pretty impressive! Koko Loco from Regan's on the right. Stainless Steel from another great local nursery (Alden Lane) in Northern California on the left.

Try messaging gardengal too though... she may have a local source where you can just go and pick them up in person. :)

I'm surprised you can't find them at a local nursery. They're both relatively new and have been in all of my local nurseries since they were introduces.

Thank you Seil & Patty! Unfortunately it looks like Angel Gardens and Northland sell Koko on own-root stock. I'm hoping for bare root/grafted, as I've had much better success with grafted plants where I am vs. own-root. The own-root roses I've bought have sat and sulked while the grafted ones (primarily from David Austin) have far surpassed them. This may have to do with individual varieties or other factors, I'm not sure (nor an expert, but I'm trying to learn!) but for now I'm attempting to stick with grafted roses when possible :)

Another problematic factor is that the island I live on has no stores at all, and therefore no nurseries! The nearest nursery, accessible only by boat, has a pretty small selection.

Sarah- thank you so much for reminding me about Christianson's!!! I've been there (what a dream) but somehow it never occurred to me to check their website for a rose list, duh! I will look into that (always eager for an excuse to make the trip and visit that place!)

K&M has them but they're grafted on Fortuniana which I love! Bigger roses. K&M Roses

Siri, own roots always take longer to take off. It's just the nature of the beast. When you order a grafted rose you are getting a one or two year grown out rose. When you order an own root you're lucky if it's one year old. And without the grafted root stock to push faster, stronger growth (which is the purpose of putting them on root stock) they always take a while to establish themselves. If you have patience they do, in the end, catch up to the grafted roses. They also have the advantage of wintering better because you don't have to worry about the graft freezing off and ending up with just the root stock. I know in zone 8 you don't have the frigid cold winters I do but I'll bet you do get several freezes. The freeze and thaw cycle can be a real killer.

You should contact Weeks Roses to buy them wholesale since you're looking for a quantity. You do not want Julia's Rose, although pretty it is very weak.

I am circling back around to this post because now, almost a year later, I am STILL struggling to find bare root plants of JULIA (aka Julia's Rose). I'm really baffled as to why she is still so hard to find online since she has become more and more in demand amongst florists. If anyone has seen Julia in stock and for sale anywhere, preferably grafted/bare root, please do let me know. Many thanks in advance!

Hi Siri, Julia’s Rose isn’t a common rose because of its unique color, that’s why you don’t see it sold in bare root often. You can email Burlington here http://burlingtonroses.com/ . I got two of them from her in gallon size (not bare root) and they are amazing in pots. They are very healthy and bloom all the time. Helen
