Comments (33)I would have thought the Willamette Valley would be an easy place to grow roses because so many are grown there, I think: Rogue Valley Roses, Heirloom Roses, Portland? When I planted AC, I dug a large hole and mixed the soil 50/50 with compost and native soil which was good for it because the species roses don’t like much in the way of amended soil. Now, when I plant roses, I dig a hole 2 ft wide, 18inches deep which is difficult coz I have to remove hard pumice soil. Takes me a couple of days. I then put in at least 6 inches of purchased steer manure mixed 50/50 with native soil and a generous handful of steer manure. Then I cover with a half inch layer of peat moss, then 50/50 mix of G & B rose planting mix and native soil and then the rose is planted in this mix. Is there anything you can do to make the soil less acidic and claylike?...See MoreParade Day, new striped rose at High Country Roses for $16.95/liner.
Comments (2)Lilyfinch, I'm tempted to. If I do, there is no rose bed spot available for it, so it will have to be container grown for a while, which may be a good idea. I will then be able to study it further to determine its strengths and weaknesses for a couple years. As a liner size it will take a couple years for it to get large enough to get a reasonable evaluation. What drew my interest to Parade Day are its fragrance, and the possibility it is only lightly, subtly striped, and with mostly light pink stripes as the photo shows, hopefully not also having bold, white striped blooms as well. I do not like most striped roses in the garden, especially those with dramatic striping. They, in full sun, look diseased to me (mildewed, bleached, or hit with weed killer). In a vase, under different light, they look great. I grow roses mostly for their garden beauty, not for arrangements. To my eyes, subtly, very mildly striped roses are lovely in the garden as well as in a vase. Moses...See MoreHigh Country Roses discount code
Comments (69)Nahema is really pretty! Is it a climber for either of you? Dortmund is really beautiful and I asked Matt about it once when I was admiring his mother (cutting) plant. He said it was the best it had ever looked which sort of implied it normally didn't have so many flowers so I ended up not getting it. Then last year I saw a hugh gorgeous one at the Cleveland Botanical Gardens that was loaded with flowers so it definately does well out there. These 3 pictures are from the Cleveland Botanical Gardens. Does anyone think I could get Dortmund to this size in Denver? It is a zone 4 so maybe I should try. Thanks for the report on Lady in Red. I had such high hopes for it and was surprised it died down to the ground. If yours didn't make it then I'm not the only one. All my pictures are previous years also. In the very short time I've been growing roses I learned not to prune before May so as not to encourage new growth as it will just freeze. I think so far it appears all mine survived this last winter due to a bit of green cane at the base. Robusta is the only rose I've added that has turned into a good sized bush and is green to the tips. Pretty Lady rose is next for reliable green cane but not showing new growth on them yet, except at the base. Winnipeg Parks appears to be putting out alot of new leaves. She was put in July 2019 so is just an itty bitty thing. I have high hopes for her. I am very surprised that my Bucks had serious cane death to the ground (Amiga Mia and Calico Gal). Even my Fairy which is a 20+ year old plant had alot of cane die off so I think I will prune it to the ground to get it rejuvinated this year. The last couple of years it seems to have struggled and been losing size year over year. Glad to hear your Love Song does well! I put one in July 2018 but it only had two blooms last year. It is in a sheltered spot because everyone said it wouldn't live. But it is too shady and probably needs to be moved to the sun. However then it will be exposed to the harsh winters. My husband wants to give it another year because he is the one who would have to move it. So not sure what will happen with it this next year. What sort of environment do you have yours in? Any photos of the full bush?...See MoreMy experience with buying roses online
Comments (46)MNDutch RoseGuy Thank you for the fantastic report on nurseries, I never buy from Edmunds roses after googling "The scoop on .. name of nursery", this gives customers' reviews on any nursery. https://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/123/0/ How do you like the own-roots bought from Roses Unlimited this summer sale? Nurseries that I bought own-root roses from are: Regan, Burlington, Heirloom, Chamblee's, High Country Roses, Roses Unlimited. Right now I'm debating if I should buy State of Grace for $16 from Northland Rosarium ... shipping charge is $20 for 2 roses, but Andrew is excellent in customer service. Della Reese is wimpy as grafted-on-Dr.Huey (got from local Menards store for $6 as bare-root). It didn't even flower for 1st year, so I killed it. Grafted-on-Dr.Huey declines drastically after 2nd-year in my zone 5, so I no longer buy grafted-on-Dr.Huey unless it's flowering lots in a pot at local store. Very happy with the 6 roses I bought from Roses Unlimited this June 2020 summer sale, they are 3 times taller than the 4 bands I got from High Country Roses late May 2020. The bands from High Country Roses are so short that they got eaten by bunnies this fall. For dense & thick and alkaline clay like mine, just a bare-stick Dr.Huey-roostock doesn't sprout roots well, even when bought from Regan Nursery, such as Young Lycidas (grafted-on-Dr.Huey) died through its first zone 5 winter. The blooming power of 3 own-roots roses (large bare-sticks) from Regan Nursery is less than the blooming power of 3 own-roots roses (in pots) from Roses Unlimited. In the past decade of buying 130 own-root varieties, I find that alfalfa meal is a must for growth-hormone, it's worth making a special trip to the feed-store for a 40 lb. bag of alfalfa meal to mix with potting soil or to top my clay. Roses Unlimited recommends mixing 2 cups of alfalfa meal or 1 cup Mills Magic Rose Mix in the planting hole. Below is a tiny band of Crimson Glory (bought from Burlington) producing 4 bud/blooms after 1 month of purchase, fertilized with alfalfa meal....See MoreSheila z8a Rogue Valley OR
