Please help me with this! I got a Kentia Palm about two and a half months ago from Home Depot. It is about 6 feet tall and came in a 5 gallon bucket which it is still in. Every since I have had it, all of the smaller outer leaves have been slowly turning brown and drying up. I water it as soon as the soil gets dry, and it is in the middle of a room that has a bunch of windows but it is not in direct sunshine. How much water does it need? (oz's) Does it need any direct sunlight? Because it is so tall, the very top leaves are barely grazed by the air from the heating vent, but that doesn't seem to be significant enough to effect it in this way. All the browning leaves are at the bottom of the plant. The leaves are not browning from the tips, but more so overall just slowly turning brown-green then to completely brown. Attached are a couple of pictures. PLEASE HELP! I got this as a very special birthday present, it is a center piece in my living room, and I love this plant very much and want to have it healthy for a long time! Thank you very much :)

What's with everyone having problems with Sago recently???? Those are leaves, not branches. Hard to tell from the photo, but yours looks like it's been growing poorly, with lack of light and probably a poor soil mix. When cycads aren't able to grow well (and they grow slowly compared to other plants), they will sometimes start pulling nutrients away from old leaves. These are NOT houseplants. It should be outdoors for as many months as possible if you want it to grow well. Placing your plant in the sun is a good thing, but the old leaves will quickly fry because they are not used to it. Cut off the old growth, give it a high nitrogen fertilizer, and sometime this summer your plant will put out new leaves if it is "happy". x

You are supposed to leave the it if there is some green in it. I know, it looks ugly while recuperating, but new growth should be better off for it. Winter sun is hard on evergreen...especially in a WINDY site. I would think about sitting it on wheels eventually and rolling it into a move sheltered position over the Winter (less sun, less wind). Wrapping the foliage and trunk and the pot with some burlap would not hurt in the Winter either. Good luck.

That looks like freeze damage to me. Freeze damage doesn't usually show up immediately, sometimes it'll start showing up several days after. I checked the weather for Dallas and it looks like on the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th of January, Dallas had low temperatures of 27F, 21F. 17F and 24F. On the 7th, the high was 27F, which means it was below freezing for at least 24 hours. I think 17 degrees is pretty close to the temperature limit for chamaerops. You posted this on the 13th, which seems like an appropriate time frame for freeze damage to show.
