Dying Kentia Palm :(
Comments (4)Looks like the air is too dry, especially if that heater it's beside is turned on. The little 'bubbles' is slow release fertilizer usually put in the pot before the plants are shipped out of the nursery. I would repot the plant to a slightly bigger pot with a good potting mix and try and increase the humidity. Maybe you can spray the fronds with a mister a few times a week. Also are you sure this is a Kentia palm? It looks like a majesty from the pic....See MoreIndoor Kentia palm growth pattern
Comments (3)My plant is indoors. I think it may be too late as the frond is almost completely open now. There is another one starting to grow. I'll try to rotate it towards an open space....See MoreKentia Palm - too much water or too little? Please help!
Comments (8)Really hard to overwater one of these as long as you have really well draining soil in a really well draining pot. Check the soil 1/2 day after you water... it should feel only barely damp, not sloggy... if it's still soaking wet, you have a drainage problem. You need to fix that so water really pours out the holes in the bottom when you water this palm... these palms however, are amazingly drought tolerant... I have forgotten to water mine sometimes for over a month and they show little damage from that abuse (indoors.. outdoors they suffer a bit more since they dry out faster). that's one of the reasons these make such good indoor palms... very tolerant of a wide range of conditions. Low light, high light, dry, moist etc. .. .but not sloggy soils.. they will start to rot then. So, If your pot drains super well and your soils are nice and really well draining, you can safely water this palm daily to weekly... should do fine either way... may grow faster the more you water it, though. Every few months you need to really water it well- take it outdoors and water the heck out of it over and over again- this is rinse out the accumulated salts that tend to build up in the soil in potted plants. Heavy salt build ups are really hard on palm roots....See MoreKentia Palm dying? What am I doing wrong?
Comments (33)I doubt cutting off a truly rotted root will harm a palm, but on the other hand, there rarely is a need, either.. .rot does not tend to travel up roots in palms. I would recommend 'play it safe' and generally leave palm roots alone.. .only time I ever cut palm roots is if I am going to transplant a palm that has been in the ground a while and is healthy and established... then it can tolerated being root pruned (though usually not all around the entire circumference at once). Helps decrease the size of the root ball (though will increase the density of the root ball) for eventual digging up and moving. Also note how crammed-packed the palm is in the root ball.... amazing but palms seem to do very well with cram-packed roots and that is the time to move them up to a new sized pot... does not seem to set them back at all to be so crammed, unless there literally is no soil left in the pot....See Morejaunuolis
