Give up kitchen table for island seating? No other inside eating area.
Comments (41)Wow, what a gorgeous place you have there! With the way the kitchen ceiling height changes in dining area to the vaulted, I was not sure if that would look strange in your KD's design that goes all the way across the longer back wall. I just played with my app by cropping things from BB's peninsula plan to move stuff around. Here is what I came up with. You could keep a small prep sink under that one small kitchen window since the plumbing is already there, but I moved the main sink to the pennisula. I moved the couch to the other wall and removed one of the club chairs because I wanted to get furniture away from the slider. I'm not sure if a round table is a good idea or not, but just thought how nice it would be for games and also faces more towards the views and the TV. I am sure it is not to scale either. Oh well, just throwing this out there anyways to spark ideas. :-)...See MoreBooth Seating vs Island Seating for Kids
Comments (24)I grew up in a house with an enclosed kitchen, with an L shaped banquette kitchen table in the corner. There were six at it every night for supper, three on the bench and three on the outside in chairs. There was only one person on the "inside" who couldn't come and go easily: the littlest kid, me. I remember going under the table a few times. As I got older, my older siblings had left home or were away more in the evenings, so I was able to choose a more accessible seat. I think the L shape is way more practical than the U, or even the booth style, which might be ideal for just two people. Just sharing my experience in case it helps you. Where I think these types of built in benches shine is in multi generational entertaining. It's nice to have somewhere besides counter or bar stools for elderly people or children to sit and visit while food is being prepared or eaten. I have many fond memories of family times in the kitchen when I was growing up....See MoreIsland Seating Dilemma
Comments (34)I am a big fan of banquette seating. I initially had a corner booth from a restaurant I recovered and then changed to a banquette from Ballard Designs. They have some that have lower back height (34", I think) to more easily tuck under a window. I see why you are considering this, using the back of an island to anchor the booth gets around the issue of the patio door that is next to the table today. That said, a drawing of the space that show doorways, windows, and other hard to move items would be helpful. I don't know from the pics if a booth/banquette would help or not. They are super comfy for morning coffee, or anytime you want to slouch comfortably while at a table, though....See MoreRepost with plans - Kitchen Island/Seating and Design Questions
Comments (10)This is quick and dirty, but if you're OK with the narrower island, and you can move the DW down to the end of the run without having the window divider bisect the sink, the fridge could go on the same wall as the cooktop. (I've been drawing a 36" cooktop, with 30" wall ovens, but a 30" would allow you to have an 18" drawer base next to the super susan. If you're using the 36" range, with 24" MW and steam oven? then you have more counter space on the pantry wall, or space for wider pantries.) It would be a more efficient layout, but you need to decide if the aesthetics will work for you. The ovens open into the long aisle, not against seating; with a step back, the island could be used as landing, or if no one is in the last seat, there is landing space to the right. The 18" drawer base could instead be another trash pull-out, convenient to the chiller and MW (if MW is part of oven stack). Sorry for all the editing--I can't seem to pull it together this morning. :[...See Moredaisychain Zn3b
