Seating vs. no-seating in island
Comments (27)I wouldn't worry at all about not moving in a straight line through the mudroom. You won't even notice that slight jog. We used the kitchen door exclusively which was set about 3 ft to the left of the doorway from the kitchen to the DR. It was never a problem. Not awkward at all. I can't see why you can't just move the existing cubbies. And remember as Buehl said, they don't stay little long so the cubbies may not be as important as getting a great layout. An island with seating never gets outgrown! One possibility for the pantry wall is bathroom vanity base cabinets. Sometimes they come in 18" depth then you wouldn't have to do custom. I think 18" deep base cabs with 12" deep wall cabs down the the counter would look great. If it were me and I was going to do tall cabinets, I wouldn't go deeper than 15" (I'd probably even consider 12") because stuff is so much easier to access when stored on shallow shelves. Many people have microwaves installed in the island. Looks great and seems to function well. I do believe you can get them it fit in an 18" deep cabinet; it depends on what size you use (we have a small one as we use it only to reheat beverages and snacks or pop corn). Can you fit 15" between the fridge and range? 18" would probably be better but I think 15" would work. We have 18" between the sink and fridge at it's plenty of space. I don't think it will look like too much stainless with the sink and fridge so close to each other. Were you considering moving the patio doors? If you did that, and put the fridge on that wall, it would be more easily accessed from the family room and the deck (if that's what's on the other side of those doors). I worried about putting a tall appliance next to a doorway the first time I did it, but it turned out to be just fine. I never felt like I was walking through a tunnel or anything. The swing of the garage door looks like it will function well in either direction but I think I prefer it the way it is....See MoreIsland dilemma...Will this look odd?
Comments (1)I think you'd be ok with running them parallel to the seats. General rule of thumb is to have them around 30in from each other so I think by having a 4ft wide counter, you still should have enough room to inset them and have enough distance in between. Comments (8)If this is the only dining seating in house, I would not like seating facing 1 direction. It's ok, if you have a table option elsewhere to sit around. I want to see the people around my table & enjoy family dinners. Can you get the island space to sit on both sides? A bench that slides under when not sitting? Comments (13)Kitchen area: --In such tiny kitchens, open shelves make sense as long as you make a commitment to being very neat about them. Why do you have cabinets in front of the window? You could do a smaller version of this to let in light: Consider having a small, not-too-deep bookcase built with marble top against side of stove. Use for your cookbooks and a small landing spot next to stove. It can't be too deep since bathroom is there--very weird location for a bathroom. Do you have a garage on the other side of left door as you face kitchen? If so, and there's room, put tall steel shelves for your baking pans, etc. Island and dining space: --Consider an island with corner angles for ease of passage and possibly a demi-lune dining table on the other side of the island. Your current dining area is too small for full-four sided dining table, but a table extension or banquette might be great solutions. Banquette seating and table against dining area side of island. Flip-up seating under cushions would give you storage for large cookware. Much smaller version of this idea: Oval tulip table could be placed in front of banquette seating with two additional chairs added: Other possibility is to turn the "nook" area near the stairs into a dining nook with a small round dining table and chairs--could be banquette like this or just round table a few chairs with a great pendant dropped over it to set it off. Using that stairway space for dining would leave you room for your island. But do be very careful about the size so it doesn't overwhelm the space. You need plenty of space all around the island. Start doing a search for "tiny kitchens" to see what possibilities are--open shelves; spaces outside kitchen; use of stairway nook. You need to see the space differently than you do. Never block light coming into a kitchen....See MoreShadyWillowFarm
