Phaius Spell-ing Po-lice
Comments (2)Gary, you were correct when you wrote, "Humans have crossed and recrossed until the names are meaningless anyway." At least, that is substantially true with the two Phaius species, wallichii and tankervilleae. When, for decades, no distinction was made between the two and the suggestion was that they are the same species, it is reasonable to conclude that finding the "pure bred" species will be more difficult in the future and that's a shame. Your tag labeled "phaius" tankersville x flava hybridus is a good example. Phaius Hybridus was registered in 1892 by Jewett as a cross between wallichii and grandifolius, according to the RHS, The International Orchid Register. Simultaneously, Jewett registered Gravesiae as a cross between wallichii and tankervilliae, presumably to cover his bum! OR, were there noteworthy distinctions between grandifolius and tankervilliae that are lost? I guess that we need to find some obscure writings from Jewett to know for certain!! :-) --Stitz--...See MoreAnthurium faustomirandae, the correct spelling!

Comments (7)Where did you get it' BeachPlants?' What company. THATS it. It is called either 'Orbea' or 'Orbeopsis' Melanantha. All I know is that it is THE stinkiest Stapelia flower I have ever grown and I love it!! You all got it right! I was spelling it wrong, so I couldnt find it. I was close, but wrong. I HAD a huge one for years, and it finally bloomed one year, like 7 years back, and it was the worst stink in the world! I loved it!!! I could smell it from over 6 feet away easily. Then it just slowly died, and I took cuttings and they rooted then they died, the minute it is over watered once,it dies! Where did you get it Beachplants? I would like to see if I can get a ROOTED growing one...maybe I can keep it alive, and out of the damn rain! To keep it DRY!!! I miss this 'stapelia'...I was so proud of my huge plant, draping over a 6in hanging basket, the blooms popped open one morning, and I thought a cat died in my yard overnight! After it stopped blooming, (and I got about 3 sets of blooms), it just slowly died section by section, and then we got hit by hurricane Wilma, and that is when my huge stapelia collection was totally wiped out. To this day, I cant find a REAL huge Stapelia Grandiflora. I have two now, and they bloom easily and frequently, but the one I had, had enormous flowers, the tips were almost black, the flower was easily 7in across, and BIG and furry it was spectacular,...but to this day, I cant find the exact 'clone' or variety of Grandiflora, that puts out THAT big and red and furry of a bloom. The ones I have are nice and most stapelia lovers would be jealous of them, the way thy blooms is unreal, like 10-15 blooms at a time, 5 times a year...right now they are in bloom and they are pretty, but they are only half the size and not as furry. I think I lucked out and had a 'freak' plant, and it is long gone. but THAT was a GRANDIFLORA! I am TRYING to rebuild my collection. But I lost all the correct names, so when i run across a picture of a plant that looks familiar...I ask what it is, and if the flower matches, I buy it. I want this one BAD! So...where did that one come from BeachPlants?...See MoreThe demise of good english and spelling things correctly
Comments (115)I can not spell. i haven't been able to spell since i flunked spelling in second grade. but i know that i have a problem, so i use spell check. but spell check doesn't understand usage/context ie: their and they're are both correct to spell check even if used incorrectly. that is one reason why people spell incorrectly, even if they are using a computer-- spell check says it's okay. some people don't spell well because they don't know they have a problem. they don't even bother to go and check-- it looks okay to them. i know the word is wrong; i just don't know what's wrong with it. my latin and german professors dispair of me. my papers were littered with (sp)'s written by me before they were turned in. after 3 years of college german, a professor finally counted all the languages that i had spelling problems with: english, latin, french, german, spanish, italian and stopped counting as it seems my weakness also extended into more archaic languages as well. but my neices and nephews, brought whole new meaning to my inabilities when i started reading their letters and papers. evidently, content was more important (and this i question as well) than the technical aspects of writing such as spelling, grammar, punctuation etc. my wife and i share a special pet peeve over mis-used possives. diggerb...See Moresleeperblues
