Yes, one will fit. But I don't know if you can get both trash and recycle in there. You need to make sure your drain is located offset or rear, and you need to avoid using a large garbage disposal. Its very tricky to make sure it all fits - especially if your cabinets are framed because the face frame will limit the available space.

In my current kitchen and the one I am working on in our vacation home, I did a single under sink trash pullout (for prep/clean-up) and a double trash/recycle in an 18" wide cabinet located where it is accessible to traffic and the refrigerator.

Yikes see that is what makes me nervous. I would be bummed if it didn't work!

I read a lot of threads on this, and the main complaint is that someone using the sink is in the way of someone getting to the trash. But with my layout, someone in the prep zone would have been in the way of the trash too.

caligirl5 if the drain were centered couldn't you still do pullout trash one side pullout recycle other? that's how we have it now its just not pullout. seems to be fine, but we dont have a deep sink now. yes i did read that complaint too but rarely, a few excuse me's but I'm fine with that :)

How big is your sink and how much trash and recycling do you generate? With a 36" Kohler Whitehaven with an offset drain, we've found plenty of space for trash and compost (recycling is under the second sink at the back of the photo). Trash and recycling would work equally well unless you have mountains of it. I had a little shelf put in the pullout so it's easier to use the compost and then the bags all fit underneath.

The disposal is on the right, so there's less space, but there's still room for a good bit of cleaning stuff. The GC put the square on the bottom to show the area we have to keep clear for the disposal, but you can still put short things there.

Well, for one thing, the trash pullout belongs in the Prep Zone, not the Cleanup Zone -- unless you have two pullouts or only one sink that serves both as prep & cleanup sink.

The main reason I don't like them under the sink, though, is that I have seen so many overflowing trash cans under sinks that it just grosses me out in general! Putting a lid on it helps, but it still bothers me in general to have the trash next to other things that are not trash-related. (I also see people missing the trash can or dripping stuff down the front and into the cabinet.)

Note that this carries over to the trash pullout's drawer above - I would never put linens, silverware, etc., in that drawer. In my Kitchen, the Junk Drawer is in that drawer.

But, that's just me! Maybe it doesn't bother you.

Oh, and you can have bigger bins in a pullout vs under a sink.

Trash is too important. Keep it separate unless really tight on space or it's a 2nd trash imo.

yeah that's pretty rare here we don't have little kids and i think the white cabinets help...i see everything. wouldn't people miss the cans in the pullouts too? maybe that's what you mean when you stated it carries over to pullouts as well. Yeah if i do a pullout i think i would do full height cuz i can't imagine what i would put in the drawer above? extra trash bags? we are all neat nicks around here...we don't even have a junk drawer. never have.

i do like that, but then again i wonder if it would get stinky. ours is small now and literally goes out about every 2 days which is nice.

MaWizz, the cabinet company did the shelf and cubby, but the GC added the box to show where stuff can go. I'm really happy with both!

In my case, I preferred using cupboard space to store things rather than for garbage, and for some reason I'd rather have the 'ick factor' of garbage under the sink rather than festering in the midst of dishes and cookware. Granted that doesn't make much sense, since those things are right next to the sink cabinet anyway. Maybe it's just parental imprinting that makes me think that trash has to go under the sink.

This is my plan exactly ... with two thoughts:

- The trash can'll be under the sink. We're going with a large prep sink, and we'll also have a prep area on the adjacent peninsula ... so the trash can'll be accessible to both areas.

- I'm planning to have a larger trash can in the nearby laundry /mudroom, which will be on wheels. The trash can, not the laundry /mudroom. That was a misplaced modifier. We'll be able to roll that trash can out to the backyard for cookouts, and we'll be able to pull it into the kitchen for days when we're canning or doing other big work in the kitchen.

also, in my mom's new kitchen she did the pullout next to the sink and she literally has about 4 things under her sink now. that's alot of wasted space! and what a great place for waste no?

I put my trash/recycling/compost under my sink. It was the right decision for me since the other option would have been under my prep area and that would have been much more inconvenient! I also used a slightly larger sink base than what I needed to house my sink, and by doing that I was able to fit in the trash plus garbage disposal and not lose the extra cabinet.

i just measured my current sink cabinet and it's 42! and i'm going down to a 33 in the update maybe because the one i have now is so big i think it might work... hmm?

I am very happy with my under sink trash & recycling bins. I have them under one side of my sink. I do have a sink with an offset drain, and no disposal.

I have a 30" cabinet and a deep sink, and not only do I have trash and recycling, but a compost bin and a few cleaning supplies. The drain on my sink is rear middle but the trap etc are oriented to the right. So I have a 22" long pullout with 2 bins on the left, and a 15" long on on the right. Notice that I replaced one of the tall bins that came with this Rev-a-Shelf unit with a smaller one from Ikea. The rear one hold the recycling, the front is trash, and the covered metal unit is compost. The pull-out bin on the right cabinet wall is also from Ikea, and holds things like a screwdriver, a tape measure, a roll of packaging tape, and dust cloths. There is room for sponges, dish detergent, a can of febreze spray, and a few other short things on the pull-out behind the compost bin.

MaWizz-- I've moved some stuff from under the sink into the broom closet and I'm feeling guilty about wasted empty space under the sink, so I know what you mean. :). As for the offset drain and single basin, I love it. We've only had two bowls in the past, and this is SO much more useful--plus more space under the sink with only one drain. Also, great to see your kitchen (and you) again CarrieB!

carrie b i like that set up too. that would work for us. again, not sure about off set sink. geez, i'm getting set in my ways lol. i never thought about it til tonight and i can see how that would work pretty well, but i would definitely want the disposal. i use that pretty regularly.

yes thats what i.m thinking to by the pics you all are posting. yeah i'm thinking i might like that alot based on the fact that it is my one and only sink. i can leave dirty dishes to one side and still have drain open on other to rinse veggies, drain pasta, etc. is yours a 30" sink then since you have a 30" cabinet?

The more I look at these pics. I think I like it better when the cabinet door is attached to the trash/recycle holder so that it is just one step to pull out.

I also have only one sink, and it's not even a big one. I live alone, so there's no issue with being in someone's way who is trying to get to the trash while the other is working at the sink. Also, I have a dishwasher, so (for the most part) dishes don't hang out in the sink... except for maybe pots and pans, but by that time, the veggies are rinsed & long gone.

Anglophilia, in many kitchens (like mine) there is no place to put a freestanding trash can.
