Should we take an almost-free cruise?
Comments (13)Cathy, thanks for the link. After I posted this, I started googling and found a lot of negative material on this company and this type of sales technique. There are a lot of complaints about the hard sell, the scheduling difficulties, and the poor accommodations (bunk beds! Yikes!). Even if the company is totally above-board and things go smoothly, it doesn't sound like the right kind of vacation for our lifestyle and our finances. Next time, I won't be tempted by the thought of doing something so inappropriate for us just because it's "free." I sent my kids the link to this post. My DD said: "Even if you don't drink cocktails or go to fancy shows, there are hidden charges, and you can bet on paying more than the base amount that's been quoted. Since you're on the boat every night, you will wind up going to the shows, because the state rooms are too small to hole up in. On the plus side, it's a readymade vacation so you don't have to do tons of planning to make it happen, and you deserve a treat for your 40th anniversary. If you wait to plan the perfect itinerary "someday," it might not happen... so there's a certain benefit to grabbing an available opportunity if it's good (even if not absolutely perfect). It's been a lot of years since your last vacation!" And my DS commented: "If you're prepared to spend any money at all for a trip/vacation, what do actually want to do? If not a cruise, then what? Would you rather travel somewhere else? Would you rather embark on some sort of event or activity? Also ... could you find a better deal without the obligations?" Wise kids! Thanks, everybody, for your thoughts! Sue...See MoreTravel Insurance on a Cruise?
Comments (7)I've never purchased additional health coverage. I have been traveling with a child since she was a wee one, and still not done it. Never thought it necessary, and we have done some crazy adventure driven trips. None of "graze" the buffet all day-type trips. Three squares (gourmet to die for), snacks offered upon return of afternoon activities and hors de'oeuvre at happy hour prior to dinner. One trip I lost 15 lbs over 3 weeks, despite dining like a queen:))). Have you contacted your health insurance carrier? Probably a good idea to see what they have to say. Are you doing one of the large cruiseline trips? Haven't ever done any cruises on the big lines, have only done small ship adventures. The internationals always had a physician on board despite the small number of passengers and staff (approx. 128 total capacity). Trips we've done within/around US borders didn't have a physician on board, but those were also cruises with an even smaller passenger capacity. In the event you are injured, the ship's physician is probably going to be making the call as to where you will receive your medical treatment. I'd inquire from the cruiseline about that as well. What's their plan for injuries sustained requiring medical attention in excess of what the ship's physician can provide. They must have some sort of policy/guidelines for that. If they don't, I'd be surprised and a little worried. Also, while the ship is set to sail at 4, I'd bet that doesn't actually happen until at least 5. We've never sailed at the exact departure time :). I have purchased trip cancellation insurance but only for trips to the OBX. Hurricane season runs through November, and we usually go the week preceding Labor Day (the very height of the season). Have more than once started our vacation on the heels of a direct OBX hurricane hit. I've never had to use the insurance. Are you heading to Mexico?...See More:o( Why I'm not cruising the BLUE! :O(
Comments (56)Oh doggone it! Sorry you missed it. We, DH and I got home last week from our first cruise, 5 days on Carnival Inspiration. I must say, I did enjoy myself. BUT, my DH, who is NOT a people person, Just kept walking around saying to himself, me our friends, "Worst cruise ever!" He is such a party poop. I just went ahead and enjoyed myself, joined in a lot of activities, and really had a good time. It was on the 4th day that someone told him I was on stage and they were showing it on the tv. He finally caught it just before we debarked. On the cruise we did hear the sad stories of how air flights are cancelled and everyone said you must plan on flying the day before your cruise to make sure that doesn't happen. Better luck next time, Kathy G in MI...See MoreMy cruise: The good, the bad, the ugly.....
Comments (55)Oh yes, the towel animals were one of the best parts of our cruise too! Our cabin steward, Alf, left one every night after turning down our bed and tidying up. I put them on our window sill where I had a zoo going and Alf would leave them there until there were too many to fit and then he'd take them away. I was very disappointed that Alf didn't leave a towel animal on the last night of our cruise. About an hour later, hubby pointed at one of the upper cabinets and said, "Look!" I couldn't believe that it took so long for one of us to notice it!...See MoreMtnRdRedux
