I like FindAGrave and familysearch dot org for free sites. Lots of information there.

I was given an Ancestry membership for Christmas. I've had a lot of finds. Lots of wrong info out there also. It has been fun.

FamilySearch.org is excellent. Perhaps better than Ancestry.com and it is free. It is run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Yes. More information does get put out there. I worked with the two sites I mentioned above. I had extensive information just from doing that. Even if you don't have an Ancestry membership, you can do searches on a person's name in Google. You'll find at least some partial Ancestry trees. I used those as clues and was able to use the other resources to do more research. From there, I found a couple of blogs that helped fill in some gaps.

I just started with Ancestry on Christmas Eve. I've rather quickly have been able to put trees together based on previous research. There are a lot of pictures and stories. I've run into two adoption situations. One was a relative by marriage. She gave up her child. They found her biological relatives by dna testing. I made my tree and my relative is on there. I was contacted. I have a couple of pictures to share and just a little anecdotal information because I knew her.

The other situation I came across just the other day. A lady was raised by another family after her mother died in a house fire when this lady was a toddler. She knows her parents names, but couldn't get back further on her mother's side of the family and the death occurred after the 1940 Census so information is still locked up under privacy laws. I am looking at the family through some other branches. I contacted them because they had some info that is different. The grandmother was a backup singer with more famous connections. I thought maybe they had listed her stage name. It's still a mystery, but they are looking at my trees. I've suggested dna testing.

deadfred.com for old photos sorted by state or names. These are photos that were lost and then found at antique stores or yard sales, etc. I found a friend's Great Grandfather there.
