Anyone here do this and belong to a site..I just can't pay the $4 or more and not familiar with what site to use anyway...I am trying to find information on my Husbands mother who died in the mid seventies, husband doesn't know exactly when..Don't have real birthdate, she said when she died they found out she was about 5 years older than she said she was...was not 3 years younger that dad, was about 2 years older...so her birth date is about 1930. She died about 1973-1976 or so. Lived in Fairmont, Mn not sure if she died in that town or another near by. Her name is Beth Koch, her maiden name is Robertson, born in Mississippi.

izzie, I'm not sure if you are in Minnesota but you can use ancestry.com and lots of other resources for free at the Minnesota Historical society in St. Paul. Or perhaps you can contact a librarian there (at the website)to look your ancestor up.

Ancestry.com has some free services for genealogy with an a (I learned that the hard way).

Also, rootsweb.com can do a free search for death dates in the social security death index if the person had a social security number.

Send me an e-mail through "my page" here with whatever information you have, and I'll do a search. I have a World Deluxe membership at Ancestry.com, so I may be able to come up with something. The Social Security Death Index has been updated through last year; but you aren't guaranteed of finding the info you seek, because the only people who get listed in this index are those individuals against whose SS account a claim was made for death/survivor benefits.

My husband has done some DNA testing, Autosomal, which is where you match cousins and that is probably what he is asking you to do. The other hubs did was Y testing, trying to find males with the same surname. One thing you can do to have a little more control over the results is to 1) make sure you have the kit number and that you set up the password. I had ordered kits for two people and paid for them myself. This was so I could see the results but I also included their email addresses so they would get results and match notifications as well. Once I determined if hubs was related to them (one yes, one no), then I had them change the passwords so that I can no longer get into their kit information. Our situation is a little different than yours but again in our case, like yours, these were total strangers who agreed to help us out. ] Be aware that there are sites that the DNA information can be downloaded to sites like gedcom where people that have different companies that test can compare results. This person may then have your information out there for anyone to compare your DNA to theirs. Names are not listed, just your kit number and he would probably put his email address as the contact person. There is an option of not putting email address at all but then that limits possible matches from contacting him/you. These are questions you should discuss before you do the test. Know if he is having the results sent to him only, you only, or both. If you have them sent only to you, then you can request him sending his to you and you could be the one who sees if there is a match. The person who hubs did not match still appreciated receiving the information and we still keep in touch. The one who did match has helped confirmed our lines matching back to the GGGF in the late 1700's. The autosomal testing is not as definite. We get matches all the time but the probability is small. It has helped to find some relatives that we weren't sure of. Do you know the name of the company and type of test?

Izzie, you can also find many free resources on the web just by using Google. As an example, try Googling, (name picked at random just for example), substitute the name you are looking for exactly as below. Using the "quote" marks will help pare down the results to a more manageable amount. "james reed" "genealogy" "tulsa" Or you can use just a last name like this" "reed" "family" "oklahoma" Try many different combinations of words like family, genealogy, with your family names and locations and you will be surprised how much free information you can find on line. My friend who is really into genealogy says what ever sites you use, keep checking and doing internet searches over the long term, as there is always new stuff being added to the internet. I have found that to be true. Yes. More information does get put out there. I worked with the two sites I mentioned above. I had extensive information just from doing that. Even if you don't have an Ancestry membership, you can do searches on a person's name in Google. You'll find at least some partial Ancestry trees. I used those as clues and was able to use the other resources to do more research. From there, I found a couple of blogs that helped fill in some gaps. I just started with Ancestry on Christmas Eve. I've rather quickly have been able to put trees together based on previous research. There are a lot of pictures and stories. I've run into two adoption situations. One was a relative by marriage. She gave up her child. They found her biological relatives by dna testing. I made my tree and my relative is on there. I was contacted. I have a couple of pictures to share and just a little anecdotal information because I knew her. The other situation I came across just the other day. A lady was raised by another family after her mother died in a house fire when this lady was a toddler. She knows her parents names, but couldn't get back further on her mother's side of the family and the death occurred after the 1940 Census so information is still locked up under privacy laws. I am looking at the family through some other branches. I contacted them because they had some info that is different. The grandmother was a backup singer with more famous connections. I thought maybe they had listed her stage name. It's still a mystery, but they are looking at my trees. I've suggested dna testing.

Also, if you do a Google search using the words free genealogy you'll find RootsWeb and others.

I would tend to agree with the birth year of 1927 since that's on the (free to the public) Social Security Death Index. You can write to the Social Security Administration for a copy of the Application she filled out to get a Social Security Number.

The April 19, 1976, date of death would be accurate, since that's on the Minnesota records.

I hope I don't sound like an alarmist and I do understand the woman has passed away - but I'm not sure it's a good idea to post all that data online. - Do you think you should ask for this post to be removed?

eamon2 -- The Social Security Death Index, showing the SSN of the deceased (which, I presume, is what concerns you), is available online for free to anyone who looks for it. Removing it from this particular site doesn't prevent anyone from finding it.

The Minnesota Historical Society has an online site, also free to the public, and it has this information:

I have a World Deluxe membership to Ancestry.com. I can access anything and everything they have.

Additionally, I am a contributor to the site (keying in records that will eventually be online), and I'm also an arbitrator for the Ancestry.com web site. Before new records are released online, they are keyed in by two different people. The two sets of keyed records are then given to an arbitrator, who can see the original digital imgage, and who then compares the data. If the two folks who keyed the stuff enter different information, it's the arbitrator who decides which is correct (or can enter completely new info if both keyers got it wrong). Also, once information is available online, if a member sees something that's wrong (or might be) they can suggest a correction. For example, let's say you're looking at a Census image that lists your ancestors. The enumerators (the folks who went door to door collecting the information) were notorious for misspelling names -- they weren't necessarily familiar with a lot of the foreign names and/or didn't understand the foreign accents, etc. Let's say you have an acestor named Celia, but on the Census page it's written (and transcribed) as Sialia. So, you click on the link to make a correction. Or, you see the name Amelia but it's been transcribed as Amella. When you look at the digital image you can tell that the dot over the "i" is sort of connected to the bottom part of the "i" so it's a simple transcription error. You click on the link to make a correction. The information that you enter is reviewed by an arbitrator, who decides whether or not the info you enter will be viewable by everyone who has access to the records.
