Geneology question

I know through records, that the start of branch of my American family tree is an Oliphant who lived bet 1771 and 1775 - 1849, but I don't know why they came here from Scotland. Is that even possible to find out? The portion before him is on the peerage pages, so I can go farther back(other sources in my family have that portion done), but I have that gap. I bet it'd be interesting to find out.

And complicated. Like during the independence wars, one William Oliphant was loyal to the English and one William Oliphant loyal to the Scots and Bruce. The English loyalist is sent away, and presumed to die where he's sent, the other continues the line with loads of land and even signs their declaration of independence. Cousins with the same name. The Bruce loyal one, marries his youngest daughter. That's pretty loyal!
