Are kids today fatter than when you were a kid?
Comments (28)I think it is more of the popularaity of the fast food places than it is working moms or kids vegging out in front of the TV. Kids today are involved in much more activities as compared to when I was a child. When parents have that much running around it is much easier to run through a drive thru or get pizza on the way home (stay at home or working mom) then it is to make a meal, get everyone to sit down, clean up and get out the door. I know because I have four kids and it's not that they are in too much by themselves but with 4 kids it makes for a busy week. I am a sahm but I still struggle with getting them from school, getting homework done, and getting them a nutritious dinner. When we get home in the evening that is when the dishes are cleaned off the table. It is so tempting to just run to McDonalds. Also, did you ever notice how many kids have lunchables packed in their lunches? Those things are packed with sodium, fat, calories, and tons of preservatives. Plus my kids' schools starting selling snacks (like nutty buddies and ho hos for lunch) I tell my kids "no you eat the snack that I pack and you are not getting a ho ho" But of course their friends get them (12 fat grams in the pack of 2) and share some of it with them from time to time. Can you imagine the amount of fat grams these kids are getting? Over 30 at lunch with their lunchable and their nutty buddies and then 30 more at dinner if they eat at a fast food place... not to mention any cookies they might snack on through the day? That amount of fat will make an adult gain weight. I hear that some schools actually have fast food like McDonalds available to them. So even if the kids were active in sports and activities they are getting too many fat grams to offset it :( Also I heard that kids today are getting too much juice. There are a lot of calories in juice and a lot of natural sugars. It is better for them to eat the fruit than it is to drink the fruit juice. I always have OJ but after 2 glasses of it they have to switch to water. My kids would drink a half gallon of OJ a day if I let them (each one of them) So kids are drinking a lot more calories than they use to as well....See MoreCommand center ideas - do you have one?
Comments (18)We have a completely open floor plan for our old condo. Our command center(s) is not fancy but works. This organizer actually covers up the new electric panel and is great to organize coupons, school forms, calendar, lunches, and lists. In the wooden bowl on the shelf next to it we put wallets and charge iPhone behind the bowl. Keys also sometimes end up there if not hung up on the first floor landing. I The old hutch we saved, the bottom drawers holdsall user manuals, mortgage and other important household docs,. The middle drawer is for my husband school teaching projects and things he is grading. My office area is open to the living and holds all the other stuff we need and is where we pay bills, where I work and where hubby does his projects. Comments (15)There are many threads discussing "Message Centers"/"Command Centers"/"Communication Centers". Do a Google (or similar) search using "site:ths.gardenweb.com" as part of the search criteria. Search for "Sweeby's Organization Closet" as well. This is how she describes it: Instead of a desk, we have an 'organization closet' It has a stand-up desk-height counter with a wide shallow drawer underneath in which we keep stamps, stapler, tape, paper clips. Electrical outlet on the wall for phone chargers. Top shelf for phone books. Hooks and space beneath for backpacks. Hooks up top for umbrellas and dog-leashes. Dry-erase board on one wall, bulletin boards on the other two. And best of all -- a DOOR that closes!" Just a warning: Use Houzz with caution. I have seen so many nice looking but dysfunctional layouts on that site that I hesitate to ever reference it. Look at it for form/looks, and, maybe, ideas, but do not look at it for functional layouts. Comments (3)I just got rid of my Scotsman ice maker. I wasn't interested in the "perfect" ice cube. They are slow. They require a drain and filter. The Scotsman is an icemaker and icebox. There is no freezer or refrigeration component to the unit. Keeping the drain clean is a nightmare and requires constant maintenance. Whatever you decide, I guarantee you will have more trouble with the ice maker than any other appliance in your home. I have a glass front Marvel under cabinet bar cabinet refrigerator along with their wine storage unit. It came in a stackable configuration. I had space constraints that drove this decision. I do not like the shelving arrangement in the refrigerator. I wouldn't recommend it in a house with children. I don't think it will take the wear and tear. There is nothing special about the Subzero other than the price. You don't need to spend the money downstairs. Kitchenaid comes to mind for the downstairs arrangement. It's a toss up upstairs. The Subzero will take the wear of a constantly busy household. I'd would consider them upstairs. If it comes down to budget, this area will be the first one to be cut. Many of the "lesser" brands will prove reliable. Just don't go too cheap....See MoreUser
