An old classic movie
Comments (9)From the amazon website: "Having studied the 1959 version of "Imitation of Life" in film class, it has become one of my favorite films, one that is rich with many subtexts that may not be visible upon first glance. This special 2-disc DVD set contains both the 1934 and 1959 versions based on a Fannie Hurst tear-jerker novel. "Tackling a sensitive issue for the times (in both versions), these movies deal with an African-American girl who wants to pass for white to have more opportunities open up for her. The girl's mother develops a friendship and working/subserviant relationship with a white woman who has her own daughter of the same age. How the two women function in their environments and the conflicts that occur due to the daughter's "passing" constitute the basis of both stories." Same story, different title and different times. Comments (16)The Mexicans didn't get the cash, they killed Llweyen and ran. Chigur (the freaky guy) went to the hotel and got the money out of the air vent. He know that Llweyen used it as his hiding place because of the last hotel and the scratch marks inside the vent. He used some of the money to pay off the kid for his shirt. I didn't like the ending either. I didn't want to see the movie because of the violence and the "bad" ending, but I have to admit, I am a little haunted by it....See MoreLike the old movies?
Comments (20)Maybe I'm wrong but I think every generation has some stereotyping to it. I think if people are put into some kind of a grouping it's easier for marketers to convince them to purchase stuff. I try to convince myself that the stereotypes are not true so I try to treat everybody individually. Of course I'm sure I fail lots of times. I have seen a few of the movies but didn't like too many of them. I probably am among the few who liked Tom Hanks' movie Big. Wow you should see what autocorrect suggested that I write after the word big! It wasn't polite. I've seen it make a lot of mistakes but it's usually not R rated. That's why I am a little surprised....See MoreWhich Oscar Movie are you voting for?
Comments (8)I've seen all the Oscar nominated Best Picture films and all the remaining acting nominated films except for Roman Israel which I think is a long shot, and which got very mediocre reviews. Of the Best Picture contingent, I loved Lady Bird and Three Billboards because I thought they were both beautifully conceived and executed films, albeit completely different in tone. I enjoyed The Post but it felt a little too by-the-numbers, if that makes sense. It was so well directed and acted but a bit formulaic. Phantom Thread was an oddball little film, that's for sure; not sure if 'enjoyed' it is the word I would use but it was certainly gripping. Call Me By Your Name bored me in many stretches and frankly the central romance was, I thought, creepy (might have been the sheer physical disparity between hulking Armie Hammer and scrawny little Timothee Chalomet-made me feel uncomfortably close to walking a predator stalking an adolescent rather than a luminous love story). I saw Get Out when it opened, and liked it very much but I don't see it as a Best Picture contender. Thought Dunkirk was awesome and so well done but also think it's a bit too narrowly focused to be the winner, especially with the strong line up of films it's competing against....See MoreUser
