Comments (12)Oh good grief... look at this recipe I found on ifood.tv: Ingredients: Cantaloupe - 2 (Firm Under Ripe) Cider vinegar - 1 Cup (16 tbs) Water - 1 Cup (16 tbs) Brown sugar - 1âÂÂ2 Pound (About 1 1/3 Cups, Packed) Sugar - 1âÂÂ2 Cup (8 tbs) Whole cloves - 10 Cinnamon stick - 3 Inch , broken into small pieces Whole mace - 1âÂÂ2 Teaspoon Directions: Remove rind and seeds and cut cantaloupe into 1-inch cubes. (There should be about 2 quarts cubes.) Put cubes into a bowl; cover with a salt solution (2 tablespoons salt dissolved in 1 quart icy cold water). Invert a plate over fruit to keep cubes submerged in solution. Set aside 2 hours, then drain thoroughly. Combine the vinegar, water, sugars, and the spices in a large heavy saucepan. Bring to boiling and add the drained melon. Cook, uncovered, over medium heat until cubes are almost transparent, stirring occasionally. Using a slotted spoon, remove cantaloupe to hot sterilized jars and pour the hot syrup over them. Remove air bubbles and add more syrup, if needed, to fill jars to within 1/2 inch of top **** That's it. No directions on what to do once you've filled the jars. So... wonder how many folks just filled jars and let them sit?!? I would imagine even refrigerated they would not keep for long with no processing, correct? I mean, it's got sort of the right ration of 1:1 water to vinegar, but... would you process this? If so, BWB or PC? For how long? WHY don't they have people who know what's safe and what's not look at these before they post them? (I know, preaching to the choir here, but I just had to vent a little.) Comments (7)These are the only Dave stories that I know that are about pets; well except for his giant dog Bruiser. Bruiser showed up at the house one day, gaunt & stinky & with a haunted look in his eyes. Dave lived in the country, so there was no 'animal control'; you had to call the county sheriff's department. Dallas County told him that rabies was rampant that summer (it always is) & that all strays, as well as all wildlife about which they received a complaint, were being shot on site. They told him that he could shoot the dog or they could come out & do it. Have I mentioned that Dave was a rough-&-tumble macho guy? He had killed deer for the table, & he had guns in the house, but he put that dog in his truck & drove to the vet. Vet said there was nothing wrong with the dog that soap, water, & groceries wouldn't fix. Dave named the dog, had him bathed, dipped, & vaccinated & took him home & fed him all he'd eat. Bruiser got healthy & his hair became thick & shiny & sleek. & it turned out that this dog, who had been so skinny that he looked like a hound mix, was probably part Mastiff & part pit bull. In his prime, he weighed over 150 pounds. He & Dave loved each other. Bruiser slept in the bed with Dave unless Dave's granddaughter Alicia, a petite little girl of 3 at the time, was spending the night. When she came over, the dog abandoned Dave & slept with Alicia. Bruiser patrolled his territory, kept out all threats such as dogs & mail carriers, & allowed no one near Dave without Dave's okay. & Alicia grew up, I guess, as secure as any child can be. The Secret Service couldn't have done a better job. As I've mentioned before, Dave was a totally macho guy, & he'd never had Bruiser n-e-u-t-e-r-e-d. When the dog was abour 14, he began to have some kind or pain or discomfort & he started limping. If I ever knew what the diagnosis was, I've forgotten. but the cure was, you guessed it, castration. It took Dave about 3 weeks of soul-searching, self-torment, gnashing of teeth, tearing of hair, & griping, usually loudly, to everybody else about it, but Bruiser's obvious pain & the misery in his eyes finally got to Dave & he had the operation done. & it worked! Bruiser out-lived Dave; he was bereft at first, but it seemed to help him when he moved in with Alicia & her parents & could continue to do his job as a guardian. Comments (13)In this area, "do you need change back?" means exactly that- the waitperson is asking if they need to bring you back your change from your tab or can they just keep the change. I've discussed this topic with them and they have admitted it to me. A lot of times customers are taken by surprise by the question and will say "no, keep the change" even though the change is a lot more than they had planned to tip the person. It's a pet-peeve of mine and has been for several years. I actually had a young lady ask that of me when I handed her a $50 bill for something like a $25 tab. And they have asked me that when I hand them a $10 for a $6 tab. One day they'll realize that asking that question actually affects their tip more than they think, and not necessarily in a good way. A smart waitperson will bring the change broken into smaller bills without any comment other than "thanks so much, have a wonderful day." To hint at a larger tip or to imply that they should be able to keep the change is presumptuous. I much prefer a restaurant where I pay the cashier on the way out and avoid making the waitperson walk the extra steps to the register and back to the table again. I don't really like waitstaff to handle food AND money, too....See Moregltrap54
