Lets say, you are in a restaurant with a group of friends. You are the only one that wants a straw.

How many straws does the usual server bring?

LOL, it is a bet in all groups I go out with. Usually they bring a straw for EVERYONE!

and the laughter begins.

As long as they're in paper and can be re-used, it doesn't really matter if the server brings one for everyone. I think they just bring one for everyone in case someone changes their mind so the server doesn't have to run back and forth. Usually if they do that, there's a reason for it (speaking from my past experience as a waitress). :o) I've personally never paid attention to how many straws a server brings. As long as they bring me what food/drinks I ordered, I'm happy.

Usually they'll bring one for everyone. I don't blame them for doing it like that, I'm sure they walk miles and miles every day, as it is.

Now, if they ask me if I want change back from my $20 bill on my $9 tab, THAT will get me going! lolol And I'm not talking laughter, either.

He used straw. Hay has seed in it. If your grass is only 2 weeks from seeding and you've already mowed, I think your mower is set about 2 inches too low. Your mower should be at the highest setting. Once you do that, all your problems will go away. The grass clippings will filter down into the tall grass and the straw will be below the mower blade. If you don't want to mulch mow your leaves on the lawn, you can blow them onto a paved area and mulch mow them there. Then blow the leaf dust back to the lawn. If you want to speed up the decomposition of the straw (or leaves), you could spray milk on the lawn. Set the milk in the sprayer at full strength and set adjuster to flow at 3 tablespoons per gallon. The milk will set up the biology to decompose the straw. When I say all your problems will go away by mowing high, I do mean all your current problem plus any future weed problems. If you were to overseed in the spring, you would likely get weeds because you would scalp the grass down low first, thus exposing the weed seed to the sunlight and constant water. As long as you don't water for a few minutes every day or two, and you leave your grass tall, you will have a "no hassle" lawn.

Oh good grief... look at this recipe I found on ifood.tv: Ingredients: Cantaloupe - 2 (Firm Under Ripe) Cider vinegar - 1 Cup (16 tbs) Water - 1 Cup (16 tbs) Brown sugar - 1Ã¢ÂÂ2 Pound (About 1 1/3 Cups, Packed) Sugar - 1Ã¢ÂÂ2 Cup (8 tbs) Whole cloves - 10 Cinnamon stick - 3 Inch , broken into small pieces Whole mace - 1Ã¢ÂÂ2 Teaspoon Directions: Remove rind and seeds and cut cantaloupe into 1-inch cubes. (There should be about 2 quarts cubes.) Put cubes into a bowl; cover with a salt solution (2 tablespoons salt dissolved in 1 quart icy cold water). Invert a plate over fruit to keep cubes submerged in solution. Set aside 2 hours, then drain thoroughly. Combine the vinegar, water, sugars, and the spices in a large heavy saucepan. Bring to boiling and add the drained melon. Cook, uncovered, over medium heat until cubes are almost transparent, stirring occasionally. Using a slotted spoon, remove cantaloupe to hot sterilized jars and pour the hot syrup over them. Remove air bubbles and add more syrup, if needed, to fill jars to within 1/2 inch of top **** That's it. No directions on what to do once you've filled the jars. So... wonder how many folks just filled jars and let them sit?!? I would imagine even refrigerated they would not keep for long with no processing, correct? The bush forms will give a main crop and then dribble along for some time. The vining types will keep setting as the vines grow. I usually plant the bush types at two week intervals to insure fresh peas all summer. Whether to pull them or not depends on if you need the space. They will in most instances continue to put out a couple of pods per plant for an extended period, unless the pods are allowed to dry on the plant. Once the pods dry the plant follows.

Lance, this is why the highway department chooses crepe myrtle to plant in the medians. Cars can run them down and the crepe will grow back up from the roots. I had one that I had mechanically ground down to a foot below the soil surface and three years later it came back up. Bite the bullet, get some cold beer and call over your buddies to dig it out. It's too close to the house and the leaves (deciduous) are going to fill the gutters. Move the iris first to someplace they won't get deeper buried by the annual application of bark chips.

My daughter is a waitress in a pancake restaurant. She keeps straws in her apron pockets at all times. Everyone she serves gets a straw!

At the one restaurant we go to all the time here,all of the waitresses know that I use a straw and DH doesn't so there is always one in my glass.Other places,sometimes I have to ask and they bring him one too.Sometimes they have one in their apron and if I ask for one they ask if he wants one,or if anyone else wants one if there are others with us.Then there are times when I ask and have to wait FOREVER or ask again.LOL
Usually if they bring extras I stick them in my purse and put them in the glove compartment of the truck.

Why would you stow straws in the glove box? How many so you think are in there?
I used to do the same with the napkins but DH got them all out and counted 138 napkins of various sizes, colors and textures. I couldn't answer why I was storing them except I might need one some day.
He limited my storage of napkins to 6 and thats all! LOL

BTW A good server usually brings enough straws for everyone at the table but you can always say "No Thank you"

CT-There are times when I need a straw in the truck.I usually keep 2 or three extras in there.LOL I keep a roll of paper towels in the console for emergencies too.

Oh good Lillipad It is very good to know you are not a compulsive straw stasher. LOL a few straws is not bad at all.
DH asked me for a tissue the other day while we were driving and I popped out one of the napkins and said "here dear aren't you glad I wouldn't let you throw them all out?" LOL I might need one some day! should have been You might need one some day.

I have to admit it...I'm a straw-stasher and a napkin-hoarder as well. I have a roll of paper towels and a jug of water in my trunk for emergencies, and a spare change of clothes as well as a blanket. But I'm not obsessive, noooo not me! :-P

I think that asking "Do you need change?' is a regional way of speaking, meaning "Do you need the money back broken down into small bills and coins?"

So with a $9 tab taken out of a twenty dollar bill, instead of bringing a ten and a single, they would bring the change in a five, 5 singles and 4 quarters (or even down to dimes and nickels). Lots of people get mad if their change is not exactly the way they want it. Some people need small bills and coins in order to tip or if they are splitting the bill with others at the table and need to pay them. This saves the waitress another trip to get smaller change if the table doesn't like the way the change was made when it is brought. Or making a trip if the person takes umbrage at being given singles and quarters, and the waitress has to go back and cash it in for larger bills.

In this area, "do you need change back?" means exactly that- the waitperson is asking if they need to bring you back your change from your tab or can they just keep the change. I've discussed this topic with them and they have admitted it to me. A lot of times customers are taken by surprise by the question and will say "no, keep the change" even though the change is a lot more than they had planned to tip the person.

It's a pet-peeve of mine and has been for several years. I actually had a young lady ask that of me when I handed her a $50 bill for something like a $25 tab. And they have asked me that when I hand them a $10 for a $6 tab. One day they'll realize that asking that question actually affects their tip more than they think, and not necessarily in a good way.

A smart waitperson will bring the change broken into smaller bills without any comment other than "thanks so much, have a wonderful day." To hint at a larger tip or to imply that they should be able to keep the change is presumptuous.

I much prefer a restaurant where I pay the cashier on the way out and avoid making the waitperson walk the extra steps to the register and back to the table again. I don't really like waitstaff to handle food AND money, too.

When I waited tables, I found that a simple "Thank you for coming, " then I signed it with my name, on the back of the tab garnished a larger tip than just plunking the tab on the table. I would never verbally ask for a tip in any way, except by giving good service. Back then, if we made $15 a night in tips, we considered it a great night. My son's room mate works in a small neighbourhood pub and he said she makes on average $100 a night, but can take home up to $500 on a Friday night. Today, I hate tipping because of that. Add that to their wage, which in Alberta is $8.40 an hour for minimum wage, they're making way more than me and I thought I made a decent wage. LOL

Most places here, gives each person at a table a straw. There is one place that never gives one unless I ask, but they do bring each person a glass of water, no matter what else is ordered for a drink.

I also stash napkins! Many times I've needed them for spills or a quick windshield cleaning.

debby_ab, here in the states, it's unusual for a server to make much over $3/hour. For some stupid reason, it is assumed that tips will be enough to balance out to a decent/minimum wage. Their employers are not required to pay them minimum wage because of it.
