Do you plant according to your calendar, moon phases, or signs?
Comments (17)I actually believe in the "planting during a new moon" methodology. Ive done many experiments and found it to be mildly beneficial. However less so with peppers specifically. On the other hand, I still plant seeds every weekend because I like the constant flood of plants entering the garden. I believe there is a "science" to the new moon sowing theory and my take on it is this: When a new plant is germinated, the primary thrust of power and energy to grow is contained in the seed, after the first few days the plant transitions to use energy from external sources, air, water, light and soil. Approximately 2 weeks after new moon is when the full moon hits. Now, If you are planting outside, this is where you get the benefit. the freshly sprouted seedling is now just releasing it's first true leaves right at the point when the full moon is reflecting a lot of additional light. I believe this has the potential to give the plant some extra light right at the point where it's growth variables are being determined. While the benefit is small, I find it to be an interesting phenomena....See MoreWhere do you buy Miele DW Salts & what detergent do you use?
Comments (14)The tabs really do a great job (there are some older threads with loads of posts singing their praises!). We used Cascade Complete initially, but Miele came out with the tabs sometime around when we first started using our DW. A bunch of GW'ers tried them and kept raving about them so we decided to give them a try. The CC worked perfectly fine and everything came out spotless. However, the tabs seem to give the loads an extra level of clean and sparkle. Also, the air in the DW just had a fresher quality (odor) after running a load with the tab vs CC. The DW after a CC cleaned load isn't bad, just less fresh smelling. FWIW, some on this forum use 1/2 a tab (and possibly even 1/4 tab?) to clean most loads. Again, my stuff comes out fine with a 1/2 tab, but a full tab just seems to raise that sparkle and clean to another level. It's not overly noticeable, in fact, I thought it was my mind playing tricks on me, but some others here have said the same thing. We don't usually run our DW every day, so I like the sense of security (that everything will get clean) that using a full tab gives. Last night I had a pretty empty DW, but one of those few items was a stinky plastic food container that would have been quite foul smelling by morning let alone this evening, so I ran the DW before bed instead of waiting, with a 1/2 tab and everything came out great. PS there were some posters who had trouble with grit (undisolved soap powder) build up in their rack glides from using Ecover so you might want to do a search for those threads discussing that....See MoreUsing a calendar to help you organize
Comments (18)FANTASTIC tips, Joann! (Loved the sock item--that's exactly the kind of thing that gets shoved to the corner of your mind and gets remembered only when you're standing in that school auditorium/gym the next year!) The calendar function on my Mac has really helped me keep track of bill-paying, appointments, due dates for library books (with spaces for noting a new title I need to get when I go back to the library) and so many other daily-life tasks. And you don't need an "electronic calculator," as has been noted (oops, pun not intended!). IMHO, what you DON'T want to do is have a series of reminders. How many lists on little pieces of paper do you have now? Unless you really have a severe memory problem, it's a time waster to have one calendar you go to for the basics but one that forces you to look at ANOTHER piece of paper or computer site to get all the details. A second or third day planner or notebook is just one more thing you can misplace. One alternative to a computer calendar and a paper notepad in your pocket is your cellphone. Even the basic cheapie phone that I have (it's not a smartphone) has a reminder alarm component. You can set a series of alarm clock settings for tasks, like "dr. appt" at 11 a.m. and "buy bananas" and prioritize them as well. I've used the phone to remind me of the next drug-dosage times, very handy when you have a cold and want to get some sleep but then wake up wondering how long it's been since you took your last dose of Nyquil!...See MoreHow do you make a fabric wall calendar?
Comments (4)Forget the felt-no durability at all. Once again, from my teaching days-- I used a calendar very much like the one in the photo. They are able to be purchased at school supply places. However since I had large bulletin boards, I made the calendar from bristol board. The numbers were made from bristol board as well and I had a different set for each month, the reason being , they were made in a pattern with symbols appropriate for the month. Sept might have been something like school bus, pencil, school bus, pencil..... By the end of the year the patterns became more complicated. As well, we would put a symbol for whatever the weather was. At the bottom of the calendar I had a long narrow pocket the front of which was clear plastic. It was divided into 3 sections-yesterday was, today is and tomorrow will be.Each day the child put appropriate cards into the pockets. December calendar was special. I baked sugar cookies ( with a hole in the top) and hung them on the calendar. Whoever did the calendar each day got the cookie and replaced it with the number. I hope this gives you a few ideas you can adapt for your own use. Kindergarden was such fun!!!...See MoreMarilyn Sue McClintock
