Cool and minimal vs warm and cluttered
Comments (24)I think one can approach a room from a minimalist standpoint at the outset and move forward from there. Make sure everything it perfect about the shell of the room so even empty, it is at least pleasing, or has interest. This is easier in a house with architectural details like the Victorian, but even in a regular house you should be able to accomplish this in the main rooms. Don't think of the room as "furniture will cover that". Minimalists have to plan all the little finishing details, and even switch and receptacle placement, etc, and try to minimize flaws in the physical surfaces of their rooms, because they don't have a lot of contents as "camouflage". I think it can be a more satisfying room even if you end up with a fair amount of "stuff" in it, if you take the approach that you want it to look good even without. One of the reasons that we respond so well to old houses is not just the details, it's that the empty rooms have a pleasing proportion and sense of "place" that a lot of newer construction lacks....See MoreUnder cabinet LED strip lighting warm vs. cool

Comments (62)So, just a quick update. Still waiting on the rug & pillows to arrive. In the meantime a World Market *just* opened up near us and they had cinnamon pillows! I also found a funky wooden "tray" that I liked. Do the old pilllows go? Or do I need to find something else to tie it in? Also, thinking of hitting West Elm tomorrow. Browsing their website I found this cluster of vases I like - might put these on the console. Maybe the mantle? I need something warm on the TV console too.. I also found these blue ones, don't think I like them as much. They also had some cherry wood ones, but I think if I redo the large framed artwork I won't need them up there. Maybe use these for the TV console? Or keep looking? Also saw this chair at World Market that I like, but I'm going to wait until the carpet comes in. It's getting there!...See MoreCan you use a warm toned neutral color with a cool tone neutral color?
Comments (13)Can someone tell me what this color white means for me then? It's supposed to be a bright white. Will it work with the crisp muslin? Sure will. DEW380 is a very pretty white. As you can see from its hue family notation it belongs to the middle of the Green-Yellow (GY) hue family. Chroma of 0.10. And that's everything you want in a clean, crisp, neutral "just white" white. It would take some diggin' to find a color that does not work with DEW380. With its low chroma it even works with other colors of white and you don't have to worry about either color of white looking dirty or dingy - again, because DEW380 has such a low chroma value of 0.10....See MoreJane
