Comments (55)Well, I finished the rose pruning today and removed vast quantities of deadwood; enough so I could unravel most of the healthy canes and hoist them onto the shepherd's hooks. I did have to cut out some green stuff as well. This was the rose pathway on January 8, 2017. I only shoveled as far as the rose blockage. After the snow melted I was able to shove the roses up a bit so I could sidle past, but I got bitten each time. That's sweet Autumn clematis on the shelves to the right. That doesn't bite. And this is what is left today. I won't describe the state of my favorite work shirt that took the brunt of the thorny resistance (the hat and sunglasses and gloves protected most of me). I also cut back the sweet Autumn clematis that's growing on the fence and the storage shelves. The real test will be whether the roses bloom around the Fourth of July as usual. I also need to figure out how to maintain the roses so they don't get this tangled up again. Claire...See MoreAugust 2017 trees, show us what you got!
Comments (126)Kvetch. Jinny, sunshine thanks for the kind words. I foliar feed only the scion 2 times a day and I place it in the light for an extra 5 hours just before sunset. I have left the C35 snapped over to produce a lot of food for the whole plant. the higher level scion is th only part of the tree that sees light. So far no rootstock growth above the graft but I have broken over 5 buds below the graft. I am going to leave the rootstock top intact for another month or 2. The rootstock top will be in the way when I bring the tree in for the winter....See MoreShow Us Your Gardens/Landscape - a Photo Thread - November 2017
Comments (11)Yesterday I wasn't able to get photos to load, but here is our first snow of the year. It was supposed to be just rain, but we got both more precipitation than expected and colder temperatures, so some of it came down as snow late afternoon. It made a messy commute since it wasn't predicted. Like a couple of others, my Iberis/perennial candytuft is still blooming, even after a couple of nights in the lower 20's and the heavy, wet snow. Magnolia 'Leonard Messel' is a three season plant in my garden, with spring flowers, fall color, and huge silver buds on gray branches all winter. Since it's in a perennial bed with lots of more interesting flowers and foliage during late spring and summer, it is just part of the background in warm weather. Here it is last week before the high winds stripped it of foliage. Prior to this rich chestnut color, it was a beautiful clear yellow for a couple of weeks when nothing but Fothergilla, dogwood, beech, and oak still had foliage color....See MoreShow us a picture or two from your summer garden of 2017
Comments (56)Roxana, yes I was...95% I’d say. It still pops up but much more manageable. I go around every couple of months in spring and summer to catch stragglers but it’s almost entirely gone from lawn and easy to pull if it pops up in the bed. it was creeping up from an adjoining ditch and I battled it unsuccessfully for 10 years! Oddly, it seems to only expand in one direction. So now I’ve cut it off from my yard the ditch is even doing better. It seems not to be able to expand backwards where it has already grown and maybe depleted soil. Just my unscientific observation. Lol It also doesn’t like lime so be diligent about liming your lawn as you try to get rid of it. Aerating the lawn annually also helps improve drainage. good luck!...See Morenini804
