dying peace lily?
Comments (9)I agree with the sunburn diagnosis. PL's burn very easily. The light coming through mini blinds and sheers isn't enough, though. Somewhere that's not outside in the sunshine but is more brightly lit than the location it is pictured in would be good. Also agree with changing to soil to improve aeration but would personally do it with mulch instead of perlite. I don't like the looks of "white-top" soil and perlite just takes up space in the pot without offering any benefit to the plant. That soil is hard to see clearly but looks like it has a lot of peat which is hideous stuff that never seems to dry out until suddenly it's so dry it won't get wet again. Also "floats to the surface" like perlite. Read some of the other posts on here about PL's and other plants which contain root pruning advice from AL. You may decide more root pruning than you already did would be good. PL's make "pups" to increase themselves. Each individual part makes 1 leaf at a time and over time a PL can develop a whole family. Yours looks like 2 clumps where the biggest one has one growing eye and the other clump has 2 eyes. These clumps are probably still connected to each other by a root which could be severed so you could but each clump in a separtate pot, or back together in the same pot. It's been my experience that when PL's get severed from each other they usually send up new eyes and/or whole new pups....See MorePeace Lily, Growing well, and dying?
Comments (1)Hi Chris...well, your PL has sure been through a lot..LOL What size pot is it in, what's its height and what type of soil is it in? Since you've found rot and mushrooms, sounds to me like the soil is either too heavy or you're overwatering. Especially if it is emitting a sour odor. I don't normally recommend repotting this time of year, but since you're in Fl, and rot will only worsen if something isn't done this is what I'd do.. Remove plant from its pot and check roots..if any look dead, (mushy) cut them off..Feel soil near the bottom of pot..is it wet? Of course this won't work if you've recently watered. I'd discard old soil, clean container, and repot in fresh, well-draining soil...If pot is more than 1-2" wider than roots, this container is fine, but if larger, I'd go with a smaller pot. Excess soil, due to large containers doesn't work.. While you're at it, remove mushrooms. Most are harmless, but I really don't know much about shrooms. After PL is settled in its clean, fresh-soil pot, either take to sink or hose outside..Water until it seeps from drainage holes..(does your pot have drainage holes?) See how it does..it'll take time to settle which is normal, and there will be a waiting time before new leaves grow. If leaves turn black again, then you may need to apply a fungucide. But I'd wait to see how it does before adding chemicals. PS..Find a bright, airy spot..I wouldn't move it around...give time for it to acclimate. Comments (1)Oh, I love the sophisticated look of Peace Lilies. Although I'm not very knowledgeable on everything you mentioned, I do know that if it is cold you could try to push it through till spring to repot her, if it's still warm and it's only starting to cool up, repot her for the winter. If she has a bloom, it seems like she's really liking the care! I have my Peace Lilies in regular potting mix and I don't let them droop too much before I water them. If she has root rot, I'd pick up some fungicide, spray it on the root ball, repot her, rinse her down and give it a nice soaking and wait till the soil dries. This usually works for me, you just have to keep checking on the roots and the general look of the plant. Others will give you more experienced information, but good luck!...See MorePeace lily dying
Comments (6)There's your drainage problem, the attached saucer is impeding proper drainage. I'd remove it, just break it off. Sounds like the soil is not fully drying down below & that's causing the yellowing. Gnats often indicate overwatering, or soil which is too water retentive, as yours appears to be. Dave's correct, no pebbles at all, ever, they just make matters worse. I asked cause it's a common problem w/ folks who've heard it helps drainage & often come here for help to correct their bad results. Lena...See Morektpurr
