Interior Attic Access Cover
Comments (2)A few years ago I built a box out of one inch rigid insulation. It sits on the attic floor and covers the folded pull down attic stairs. I put strip of foam insultaion around the perimeter of the stairs. The box sits on this for a tight seal. I don't have hinges. I simply lift it up when going up the stairs. The box will sit upright on one of the long sides. These plans look similar to the ones I used. I do not add the insulation batt. You may have to modify the demensions to fit your opening. Here is a link that might be useful: Attic stairs cover box...See MoreFan in attic access? What is this?
Comments (6)as a kid, I loved our whole house fan. as an adult, in the efficiency field...they are a huge hole to the attic and bad news in my climate. carpet was probably stuffed in fan to stop air from attic. no gable end vents...some homes only have access via gable ends. (real pita) it isn't difficult to make an access, but first make sure one isn't hiding in the top of a closet. best of luck....See MoreAttic access doors-flat or semi gloss??
Comments (6)I agree with using the same paint as the ceiling with this caveat. Flat paint does not clean well; it can't stand up to scrubbing. I would not expect attic access doors to be used enough to need scrubbing, but you could use a paint with more durability. You might find a flat enamel or eggshell to be more durable without adding significant sheen that makes the access and trim more noticeable. Note that most people don't look up to notice the ceiling....See MoreBest access to a huge attic in new build?
Comments (25)I doubt you'd have enough clearance to continue the stairs with another half-landing to access the attic - and honestly it would most likely be seasonal and long-term storage where I wouldn't personally justify the cost of said stairs (or trade-off of light/looks) for the access I think you're best off with an oversized pull-down folding ladder in the hall. Could always get creative in hiding it, that's a different story Depending on the truss spacing, I've seen some pretty sweet (but residential code gray-area) platform lifts powered by electric hoists. Assumption is you'd have the pull-down ladder for you, then you'd set totes/boxes on the hoist platform. Platform is floating on cables, hoist/pulley system braces among multiple trusses. This isn't something someone licensed would design for you, it's more for someone that "knows enough" to be able to over engineer it. But again it gets back to how much you'd really use the storage space if it's worth it... IMO true attic storage space sucks to use, the temperature are hard on what you store up there, and these days it only makes sense if you could sneak the ladder into the garage or a closet. So I'd stick to decluttering, using basement, or garage rafter/attic for this kind of storage...See Moremrspete
