Jakvis or others -- Thermador column repair

As far as we could tell at the time, we had the first Thermador columns installed for actual use, not in a showroom or such in our area, and I have recommended them ever since. Tonight, I discovered everything in my freezer thawing -- no warning signal, nothing. The power and lights were on (turned off and things cleaned out now) but the digital panel was dark and nothing happened when I pushed any buttons. Tried turning it back on after 5 minutes off and doing a test -- lights were on but nobody was home. Nothing. Kinda sounds like that control panel went out on us. Seems pretty obvious. You agree or any other thoughts?

I saw an older post where Jakvis said they are pretty easy to pull out and replace from the front (I do remember hearing most repairs could be done from the front at the time -- that makes me feel a little better). Any guesses what we should expect that to cost? We are well past a two year warranty on that since it is not part of the sealed refrigeration system. Any issues with part availability?

Never got a reply, but thought I would post an update in case someone finds thiss down the road. It was a much better experience than I had feared. We had to wait for a part to be ordered and then installed, but that was to be expected. I was afraid it would be an ordeal and and expensive one at that, but both the diagnosis and repair were rather simple and our total bill was $160 for the part and about the same for the call and labor.

They replaced the control board behind the digital display. We could see the blown resistor split open on the side when he showed us the old panel. He said we might have taken a power surge or lightening hit in the area -- we did have an incredible thunderstorm with some really intense lightening blow through before the freezer failed. They were huge hits and at least a couple very close. We will never know for sure, but I'm glad it shut down, there was no fire, no burn marks and if it was a lightening hit, it was below our insurance deductible. I forgot about using the super chill setting but it chilled down well and the icemaker is back up and running. All is good again.

I've had no trouble with my Thermador 6 burner stove. It's 13 years old. We are now into the 2nd week of a major remodel of the kitchen knocking out the old mudroom laundry room to make a bigger kitchen. I will keep the Thermador. I am looking at an ASKO Dishwasher. I had nixed the Miele because I want to throw silverware into the DW. But if Gary is right, then I could reconsider the Miele. It looked like the ASKO has the silverware tray on top too but without the annoying slotted utensil tray. (The difference seems to be the difference between Rome's airport and Frankfort). I want an all refrigerator column so I am looking at the Thermador. I have a full freezer in our shed 10 feet away from the kitchen . (We are cattle ranchers). So all I need inside is an ice cube maker for my smoothies. But maybe a small freezer drawer for frozen fruit for said smoothies, a couple frozen pizzas, and of course the Ketel One Vodka. (No more kids at home). Could put the 18" Thermador freezer someplace though. Other columns are Lebherr, Viking. So advice on columns? And what about beverage centers? I looked at Marvel and Viking. Yikes. My biggest problem is a separate convection/microwave. Every 10 years, it seems, we are warned of the dangers of microwaves and cancer. Is a combo convection microwave good for making that extra dish for Thanksgiving and parties? Politically I'm trying to buy as much American and local as I can (local guy making our stainless steel sink), but the next best thing are European manufacturers who have union workers who make decent salaries, not slave labor. I have to decide by tomorrow and I'm still a tad confused.

The manufacturers have different ways of measuring and accounting for space -- like one measures to the wall and one measures to the end of a shelf. I'm told they don't necessarily reflect usable space. Even if they did, you are talking about a tiny fraction of an inch down the back or side. When you are talking about a cubic foot or less, you may well find that the one with the smaller stated size has more usable space. I think that's what you ought to look at -- how well the space looks like it will hold the things you need and make them easily available to you. You do lose a little space in the columns because you have basically one more wall -- one on each side of the fridge and the freezer (all exterior walls) as opposed to a wall on each side and one (sometimes thinner) between the fridge and freezer. I have the Thermador columns. Mine are 30 and 18. If you have the space for a 24" freezer, I'd go for it. I'm happy enough with the 18" in the kitchen, but we do have another freezer. The Thermadors are great looking, well-lit, well arranged -- love the higher bottom drawer. They are virtually silent, chill well, have a super chill that is great. I love the full-extension drawers and that the door only has to be at 90 degrees open to allow the drawers to open fully. I think the space is very well designed and utilized. I didn't like SZ's ice maker at the very bottom - not good for a tall person with a back and neck issues and Texas summers. I really like the ice drawer in the Thermador right in the center although I wasn't sure about it when I first saw it. I didn't have the option of 54", so I didn't really compare a pair of SZ 700's. They were the only SZ'z I liked and the choices I had didn't work as well for me. I can't say anything negative about Thermador though. I really love mine.

"but then I read about the repair and reliability issues, and am back to square one" Don't know where you got that tidbit - but it's not a very accurate picture at all. I don't doubt you've found a bad review or two about a 700 series, it's 15 years old now but has a great track record. EVERY BRAND has bad reviews, period. You'll never want to buy anything if you're searching for an appliance that has all good reviews. Bottom or drawer freezer models are no better or worse as a design in terms of reliability. FWIW , Miele and Thermador both make bottom freezer models with the same EXACT internals as their all fridge/freezer models !!! Like I said in the other thread, the reason to not get a 700 series is it's 15 years old and sched. for replacement in a few minutes. I have two of those units( one 1999 vintage) with nary an issue except light bulbs. Have also designed 500+ into kitchens over that time too, and can't recall but one or two that called for service. Burnt up motors because of dust/lint/ hair buildup on the coils - in other words - operator error. You also need to be sure to buy your cabinet maker / designer / AND installer before you even contemplate one of those armoire units - especially at 2 x 36" fridges. You best have a sizable wall or a very long cabinetry run to accommodate a 84" wide armoire unit. Lots to go wrong that can derail the look.

Does anyone know if Miele has plans for a 24 inch freezer like their others? Apparently the current 24 is Liebhor designed and not he same as the others (do door shelves)? Is that how the other sizes were as some point? I am planning a 36 inch column fridge and 24 freezer. Prefer Miele but don't like that freezer. I'm still a year away from my project so hoping that 24 is temporary filler for a 24 Built and styled like the other sizes. Would a paneled Thermador 24 look like a match to the Miele fridge? Or go to 30/30 like the original poster but I think I could use the fridge bigger, I have a garage freezer but don't want to go as skinny as the 18 inch. 24 seems the right size for me. Or I might go sub zero as I also like their over under all fridge (all fridge but with 2 separate drawers at the bottom). I currently have produce in undercounter refrigerator drawers and like the one step pull out access. But I'm more of a Miele fan. Had a subzero in my old house and knew my repair man a bit too well. But that Miele 24 freezer is a problem and I would love if Miele did the separate drawers on the bottom style for the fridge.

Hi Lascatx, I was on a short vacation when you posted and I never saw this post until today. I'm glad you were able to get everything taken care of and at a reasonable cost.

Me too. Hope you had a good vacation. The repair really was about as good as an out of warranty repair on a major appliance could go -- built-in and all. It would have been nice if the part had been a little quicker to come in, but the kids had all gone back to school and it was just the two of us -- and we do have another freezer. SO glad it happened after the holidays and not before.

And I still feel good about the Thermador columns - and my house. That was a really intense storm we had and there were at least two big bolts that hit near us. My lab was upset and storms don't usually bother her. Neighbors have had firers or had to replace appliances before, so $160 part plus labor is okay. And we used a new company for the repair -- liked the guy very much.

Since we got it running again. I have been thinkning that we put surge protectors on the outlets the columns are plugged into. If so, I'm guessing at least the freezer one is worthless now, but trying to replace it would be a real bear. Going to have to think about that one.
