Thoughts on fire resistant exterior paint?

I am thinking of painting one exterior wall of my house with fire resistant exterior paint. It is the side that is closest to another house. Was wondering what people think of this type of paint. If it was particularly effective at preventing fires, then I would expect to get a discount on my insurance, but I wouldn't so I suppose that should tell me something. At some point someone had the idea of putting lead in paint, so I'd like to make sure I'm not walking into that type of situation. What are your thoughts on fire resistant exterior paint?

Janet, you have my sympathy as well. I would only add that you should pick colors that make you feel happy. I know the trend is toward neutrals, but if this is your long-term home, I would not worry about painting for resale, but to choose colors you really like and that flatter you. Look in your closets and see what colors are prevalent -- that is a good clue. Several years ago, I lost both my mom and dad just a few months apart, and shortly after the loss of a very dear friend. I was devastated as you might imagine. Fortunately for me, DH and I had just purchased a fixer-upper, and we had always agreed that we wanted to paint in colors we loved. We ended up painting in a warm palette of spring greens and warm, buttery yellows, and every time I stepped into the house after work, my spirits lifted. We just sold the home, and despite my agents suggestion that we "soften" the paint colors a bit, we did not. We had multiple offers after 5 days on the market it, so our color choices didn't even hurt us financially, and I am convinced that that they helped me through a very difficult time. Use fire rated exterior door as interior door

There are interior doors made for sound reduction, they have STC ratings and there are exterior doors that have STC ratings you could compare the numbers to each and compare them to your wall assembly and see what would work. 1 3/8 interior doors can have a better STC rating than The wall. You could retrofit a wood threshold to the existing door to close the gap at the bottom or just lower the door assembly if it is on carpet and use the carpet as a friction fit . If your dead set on on an exterior door you remove the threshold , cut it down and modify if with wood and also shorten the width, you could remove the aluminum sill, cut the frame down and put a lower profile sill in or let the weatherstripping graze the floor.. If you like the aluminum sill just replace your flooring with aluminum flooring to match the threshold. There are many options but lack of details to help assist.

You have a psuedo-dutch colonial. But it looks like the way it was constructed is as if there is a plumb vertical exterior wall which is what the roof bears on, and this upstairs vertical wall is in-line with the 1st floor wall (at least in back, probably in front but can't tell with the porch). Then the psuedo-look "slanted" roof was added on outside of this vertical bearing wall. If so, that would lend well to just removing this psuedo- shingled "slant" wall to expose the plumb vertical wall. However, it would be a lot of work and money, as you have to then sheathe the exposed wall, extend a soffit of some sort, and in front probably deal with a porch roof that may fall short of this wall. It would be out-of-pocket, not insurance money. You also have a nice E30.

Not sure which part of Alabama you're in but in the parts I familiar with, Birmingham and Huntsville, they don't paint brick with abandon as they did in my area in North Carolina. Interestingly, new multimillion houses in my area are beginning to be natural brick, not all painted brick as they have been in the past 10 years. So do what you love. Trends come and go.

If the insurance co is not giving you a break, why bother? I am sure it is horribly expensive and it's claims(to me) are doubtful at best.

I assume your thought is to prevent the other house's fire from spreading to yours? So to be worth it to you and the insurance company, the other guy's house has to burn - not just have a house fire, but be "fully involved" and blazing like a Homecoming bonfire. That's rare.

That's what fire departments are for ... on arrival at a scene where spreading is a rick, they immediately spray fire-retardant foam on the surfaces nearest the burning building to stop the spread. The foam washes off, leaving your house paint intact.

What that paint is mostly used for is to retrofit fire retardant into places where it would be too expensive to do anything else - in elevator shafts, attics and the like.
