Comments (17)Well it's been about 2 weeks now since Caspurr had his munchers around my day lily and he's fine. Seems a lot slower and lazier (if that's possible) but I'm guessing that is the heat that has hit Perth like a ton of bricks. Poor thing hasn't had a chance to shed his winter coat yet and he's spending all day every day sprawled on his back under the ceiling fan! After reading a couple of the links you all kindly gave me I went and inspected the plant closely and couldn't see any missing leaves or tooth marks so I think he must have just been playing with the plant. He was sitting at the base of the plant watching me hang washing out, I think if the wind had moved the leaves he would have half heartedly grabbed one in his mouth then let it go. He's a bit half arsed when it comes to playing lol. Anyway, thankyou all so much, Caspurr is fine but I won't be heading off to Bunnings this weekend to get one of their beautiful Liliums... I love liliums they are so beautiful, but I love my cat more :) Cheers Ange...See MoreRhododendron poisoning in cats?
Comments (5)Pets are much smarter than we give them credit for :-) They stay away from plants that could harm them, not that they are particularly interested in eating them in the first place. You can have issues with housebound cats grazing on houseplants out of boredom and puppies digging up and chewing outdoor plants for play but adults pets are pretty darn safe. FWIW I have gardened for decades with both dogs and cats as pets and 'garden helpers' without issue, as have most gardeners I know....See MoreLow light blooming houseplant that are not poisonous to cats
Comments (13)I doubt that the low light is what caused the African violet to die so quickly. Chances are that it was rot from overwatering or a temperature problem (too hot/too cold). My experience is african violets are very tricky to water correctly unless you grow them on a wick or (my preference) as a semi-hydroponic plant. I could never get them to thrive when I tried to grow them in soil. In my experience, african violets can flower even in a north-facing window, so I think they are pretty tolerant of low light. Even if it was too dark for them, though, they would grow spindly weak growth for a long time before actually dying of the light deprivation. I do believe it is true that orchids are non-toxic. I've never heard of an orchid that was poisonous. Sansevieria is a plant that, in MY EXPERIENCE, tends not to be appealing to cats (my two cats love chomping on grassy foliage and have mowed down a spider plant to nubs more than once, but ignore my Sansevierias) but if they DID decide to eat it then it would definitely be very bad. I personally am comfortable growing sans around my cats since they have never tried to bother mine, but some people might prefer not to even take the risk....See Morekwie2011
