SF Bay Area, clay soil tree recommendation?
Comments (6)Thanks for the suggestions! blakrab: Diciduous is ok. I'm surrounded by evergreens, so it's nice to have some diversity. not sure if we have any other open space to plant more though (property is overrun by coast live oak which sprout like weeds here. Every year I pull out about 20-30 saplings, and seems like I'm making no dent in the growth density here... every few years I have to have one cut down since they start crowding eachother too much). I'll take a close look at the Texas persimmon. Is that anything like the persimmons you find sold in stores? (orange fruit)? There are few of those in the area. if so, may be there'll be enough in the area without having to plant another in our lot... hoobv: it's a pretty densely vegetated hillside property, so fire is always a concern. But never really thought bout tree-fire exposure (we're usually more concerned with shrub/grass fire). I said 15ft, but just looked at the survey map, and it seems like it's actually more like 25 ft from the house. making a terrace is an interesting idea. the tree can be taller, as long as it's the type that is conducive to shaping/height reduction management. but taller tree usually means faster growth (may be) and hard to manage? and thank you for the tree selection guide. I'll ahve to take a look at that. An arborist who just came by recommended chinese pistachio. He said around here, it doesn't get much bigger than about 25ft or so, and has great fall foliage, drought tolerant.. doesnt require too much water in the summer so won't hurt the juniper either (I called it juniper, but arborist said cypress, so... hmm). The tree sounded good until I found out that it has a potential of growing to 60ft.. i'll have to do more research on that tree....See MoreSF Bay Area- replacing floor/wall furnace- with?
Comments (2)Be aware that there are mini split air handlers that you can use with short ducts to supply more than one room. That might work in your upper floor. Electricity is expensive in CA, though so heating with heat pumps vs. gas is not like other parts of the country....See MoreNeed recommendation for a lowes kitchen designer in SF Bay Area
Comments (5)Most of the really good Lowes designers left when they quit paying commission on the sales, right around 4-5 years ago now. The ones that are left could not/would not get jobs elsewhere. Either they are old enough to be thinking of the retirement countdown, or they preferred the steadier lower paycheck of a box store to the risk of commission employment, or they didn't have the skills to be hired elsewhere. You've got a 50/50 shot at getting someone good at a Lowes. At least with a private dealer, they own their mistakes. Meaning that they are forced to learn from them because they are deducted from their commission. No one lasts long in a job if they have to pay to work there! And no shop owner will keep someone that has too many errors. It costs them their reputation as well as $$....See MoreOutdoor fountain in SF Bay Area: recommendations, care?
Comments (4)We are also in the San Francisco Bay Area and got 2 fountains and a bird bath all from the Silvestri company in South San Francisco (2629 Bayshore Blvd, San Francisco, CA 94134). They have a huge showroom indoors as well as outdoor items. All kind of fountains that are wall mounted or free standing, plus statuary and other items. Located very near the Cow Palace. We've had all of them for between 10-30 years. The birdbath has developed a crack in the bowl and have no idea why, but it doesn't leak. The fountains are both wall fountains that rest on ground and look very nice after all these years. All 3 are made of a concrete like material. Keep on timers so they run a few hours a day. Minor salt/mineral discoloration but no a big deal. We keep mosquito fish in one of them. Maybe once a year we almost empty and scrub out algae and refill....See MoreEmma Yang
