Even in zone 7A we still see freezer burn almost every year on deodoras. I have a 'Feelin Blue' that has browned back for 5 straight years but has always come back. This year we had that last big freeze that came through here not too long back and we went to 10 below...that's very unusual for us. I have a 4-5' tall 'Divinely Blue' that's in a fully exposed location and it turned completely brown. My wife said to pull it and I have to admit it's pretty ugly. But it has some new growth so I'm going to wait it out. I did have a 6 year old 2' tall 'Silver Mist' that burned to the ground I hated to lose. But all in all, I lost a lot less than I thought I might lose under that hard of a freeze. mark

My Shoestring acacia was already stressed from all the rain the last couple of years. It did not grow at all last summer where in the previous two years it had grown about four feet a year. Also the foliage was sparse last year and many small twigs were dead. Unfortunately, the freeze finished it off and we had to remove it. I'm just glad I got to enjoy it for a couple of years. It's one gorgeous tree! There are several growing in Austin. One of them is shown here in photos 14 through 17 on Pam Penick's blog: Digging. I'm very curious to know whether it and others survived this last freeze.

water properly for the next two years.. and forget about it ... there is nothing you can do ... and think about it.. i would bet my shiny penny.. that in the last 300 years ... its seen or lived thru worse ... if anything harmed that tree.. it was building the house within its root zone ... but again.. there is nothing to do.. but let the tree cope with it all .. ANYTHING you dream up.. is contrary to nature.. though i as sure you can find some snake oil salesman .. or woman.. to sell you on spending a lot of money 'fixing' it ... it is severely stressed ... it is not hungry.. fert is not a response ... and BTW ... up here in my MI ... it rather frequently occurs that we have a hard frost or late freeze.. and the trees lose all their leaves ... and lo and behold.. they all releaf ... and a pox on those that dont ... which is redundant.. cuz they are already dead ... just be patient .... i am sure this isnt the worst thing its lived thru.. however old they may be .... ken ps: i cant tell if that is dormant lawn ... but if you fert that.. the trees should never need anything else.. in that realm ....

My 25' loquat tree finally died. The fair amount of new lush green leaves it put out last spring slowly started dying off. Bark peeling worsened. Peeled completely off to the ground, in fact. No new growth has come out since last April. We removed it yesterday and put it out of its misery. Don't think the roots have any life left in them, but maybe a shoot will emerge one day, so we didn't have him grind out the stump. Not very hopeful a tree will regrow there. The arborist that removed it yesterday also concurred it was fully dead. Really changes the look of the front of the house for that to be gone. :(
