Futura leather -- good or bad?
Comments (1)Futura produces all kinds of leather, from splits to top grain, so you should be sure of exactly what leather your buying. The mechanism should have at least 5 year warranty and be from a know brand. They will use engineered plywood, make sure its of furniture grade hardwood....See MoreSectional Sofas...a good idea? or don't go there?
Comments (39)Just to update, we finally ordered a sectional from Century. It is L shaped with a loveseat on one wall and a sofa length on the other. The good thing is that it is 43" deep so it should be very comfortable to lay on. We chose a chenille type fabric in a greenish tone. We started the room's decor off by picking 2 oriental rugs and pulling colors from that. The sofa comes with 7 throw pillows, so I chose 2 different fabrics for 4 of those. We'll see if it works or not when it comes in! On another note, once we started to choose decor, we realized the color on the walls was pukey and we had to get the painters back to change from blue to brown. I'm so glad we did that. It really warms up a basement room with no windows. The lighting is what made color selection so tricky. Also in there, we got a leather recliner from Hancock & Moore. And the really neat looking Wisteria Barn door coffee table. Funny thing is that when it arrived, it really did smell like a...barn door! Fortunately that smell has disapated....See MoreIs leathered granite a bad idea for kitchen counters?
Comments (40)Leanna L, I agree with Joseph. If need be, find a large slab warehouse and take a look at their leathered granite slabs. Leathered and Honed is a personal choice and if you find yourself very attracted to all the other leathered slabs (despite color differences) then that might be your preference. I have Leathered sienna Bordeaux, which was polished when I first saw it, so had it leathered. I do love the leathered look for a few reasons: I feel it's easier to care for; no issues with even wet dough sticking in the crannies; it's quite beautiful in my eyes and I still can't stop touching it : ) I also love that it has a lower sheen, no glare from overhead lights or sunlight. But that's my preference. One thing, leathering and honing (honed is smoother, leather shows the lovely crevices and dips and so forth) tend to cause the natural stone to dull. We used an enhancer sealant to bring the colors back (and frankly, with leathered, we actually see more stone detail). One coat is fine, two coasts can darken it beyond the original polished look. To know which you'd want (regular sealant vs. enhancer sealant) simply wipe your stone off with a very damp rag - the resulting look, before the stone dries, will show the depth of color you'll get with an enhancer. Not all enhancers give you a 'wet' look when they dry. To keep a low sheen (as seen below in ours) you leave enhancer sealer on 5 minutes, then buff, buff, and buff some more. And your done : ) For what it's worth, I think Fantasy Brown would be perfect leathered : )...See MoreWhat do I need to budget for a good leather sofa?
Comments (27)Just saw your California comment. I can't get Smith here either. The Omnia leather I have been looking at is based in California. They are US made and 100% leather. The ones we've been looking at are all very cofortable and I especially like that the cushions (seat and back) can have the inserts replaced. Even those pillowy arms that are the first thing to go flat (though I still prefer a true arm for myself). Surely you can find a dealer out there. They have a couple of online retailers I'v found -- if nothing else, you can compare pricing (leather furniture expo and leather showroom, which is the online part of texas leather interiors). We had two cats when we got out current leather sectional and they were with us another 10 years. I have exactly one small scratch on the end where back claws tried to did in as one was being chased. It could be coveed up with shoe polish but because of the location, I tried it once and never worried about it again. Don't be tempted to use a marker -- someone did that on a spot on a reclinging sofa we saw at a clearance center -- the ink soaked right in, bled and made it larger, dark and awful. We've had the sectional now for nearly 13 years and 2 boys and their friends and family grew up during those years as well as aquired two 50-60 lb dogs who have lived on that sectional with us. It's still functional, but one seat is showing wear and the arms have lost some oomph in the padding. And it was a Lane -- which people now say is junk. Maybe not the same reputation 13 years ago -- I don't know. The leather should hold up well -- if the frame is solid, you should be good for a long time....See More- 7 years ago
