Does anyone think it's too early?
Comments (12)So you are drawing a general conclusion about Spring in New England based on the temperature of March 24? Your credibility is taking a serious blow. when the sun shone, the water sparkled, and one walked hatless outdoors in an open vest over a flannel shirt. The peepers were going like an extraterrestrial chorus downhill in the wetlands after dark. Skunk cabbage is starting to boil up out of the ground. Many perennials are sprouting. The tenants of our birdhouses are flying in from the south In what part of the US is this not true? Just substitute "skunk cabbage" with one of the prevalent plants of a particular area and that same statement could be made anywhere in the US. A few years ago, I had a picture of a fall scene in my office complete with a covered bridge and blazing fall foliage. A few people asked me if the picture was taken in New Hampshire. Their jaw dropped when I told them it was from Tennessee. If you are referring to D.C as the South, then you are seriously mistaken. As an Alabamian, I would never consider that area to be part of the South. It's hard to generalize anything about the South anyway because the states are huge compared to here. Most of New England would fit into Alabama. I doubt seriously that you have really taken enough of the South to draw any general conclusions. I will be the first to admit though that summers down there are unbearable. It's the main reason why I moved away. It's amazing the number of people here that talk about Southern people being disingenuous with their actions. Southerners are known for their friendliness and warmth. Since that trait is so rare for the people of New England, they really don't know how to deal with it when they encounter it. It makes me sad that people like you are so uncomfortable around genuinely good people. Claire, I would be one of those Southerners that thinks the beaches here are too rocky. The beaches in Alabama are very wide, the sand is snow white, and the beaches are raked so they don't have all of the rocks, shells, and seaweed to mutilate you as you walk across it. The water is warm and the breezes are refreshing. Here the ocean breezes are cold and strong and uncomfortable on all but the hottest days and the water is freezing at all times of the year. I think several of the beaches in New England especially in Maine are picturesque but not for frolicking....See MoreGood quality duvets/comforters for a gift to my adult neiece
Comments (15)For an adult, I would get a decent quality down or down alternative comforter and then a print cover or an inexpensive print comforter. The comforter can last a very long time and go through a number of different covers as seasons or desires change. The animals and whimsy are fun, but for most adults, they would have a limited lifespan. And I am aa fan of whimsy. The Company Store and Cucddledown have nice comforters in lighter weights, but they will cost more than some you will be able to find on sale. Macy's has some on sale this weekend and likely will have at least some on sale now through the end of the year. It will become a question of selection at some point. You say she lives in a warmer climate. I am in Texas -- closer to Houston. We have the lightest weight from Company Store and only used it a couple of nights last year. It just didn't get cold enough. A down blanket or cotton quilt is plenty most of the time, but some years are different....See MoreDo you change your decor seasonally?
Comments (20)you have a beautiful place, House Vixen! I had to look hard for that bedding..:) Was enchanted by the big picture.. actually I think it does have to do a lot with where one lives too..seasons and all everybody papered their windows to insulate them better when it became cold. the seams, you know? we had this special sticky paper..took half a day to get it done..actually wasn't sticky-you had to cook a special glue from flour or something first..I can tell you, life's much easier now. Linens got boiled in huge pans with starch..jam, you made..pickles, you salted..cottage cheese, you made from milk..and it's not like we lived in the countryside lol) it was very nice to get rid of this paper when spring came..open the windows..let the air fully in. so, insulating the windows...very tedious job. I guess while you're at that, you're already more than ok with doing something still practical yet much more pleasing..like changing curtains for heavier, and then changing them back again to breathier summer ones.. (guess who had to iron the curtains? yeah..my Grandma worked me hard..)) we had actually very few decor thingies..few paintings..I guess same way as my Mom saved her lunch money to buy books..my Grandma collected decor on the same principle..and didn't exactly reveal the prices..)) clearly the times and place weren't conductive to what she could have done, with her love for everything house..we didn't have decor books either..or magazines..yet she somehow managed. She also planted flowers on the balcony, every spring..the floors got waxed once a year(I remember myself sliding all over the house, with these brushes attached to my feet lol..I imagined it was an ice rink-made it more interesting..) I think she'd marvel at opportunities I have now...it was really hard to get things where we lived. Even if one had money. Most people didn't. We were like most people. True, we didn't pay for much more important things like doctors and schools. But then you could get lucky or not..We lived in a big city so we were mostly lucky..I guess. With schools especially. Same here though, to some extent..you also can get lucky or not..and it doesn't always depend on money of course I remember all the accents and pictures since they were so few Strangely, I don't remember any throw pillows. Interesting.. Plaids and throws, I do remember. Dishes for guests. Tea services. Silver sugar bowl. (I was entrusted to set the table when guest came. That, I loved. So exciting..the anticipation..and then running to the door when somebody rings..Pure happiness) But not throw pillows.. Maybe that's why I can't get enough of these now? It's very hard to restrain myself when it comes to throw pillows..:) Gosh, I can never stay at just decor..it always strays somewhere. I still filter though believe it or not. Lol. Or else would become a novel..:)...See MoreWhen the insert doesn't fit the duvet cover.
Comments (16)I love the poufy feeling sleeping under a duvet. I did sweat but it’s thyroid related. I kind of missed not being cold the first 10 min of being in bed, ha. When I asked what he thought he said it felt like he was sleeping under denim. ....but he slept comfortable. I don’t use fabric softener. Hopefully it softens in time by washing. Bedroom update: pb duvet is white and dark blue (almost black) stripes. I bought a white bedskirt a while back but it’s only 14” drop and I need 17“ so need to get a different one. Going to order pillow fabric. Going to use the Windsor Palm (green/blue) on euros (putting pb ones away for now) and a long blue velvet lumbar with gold Greek key trim. I need to get a few more majolica plates for around my mirror. Have most of the art. Need to buy the art I picked for above bed but that and the bathroom rug I bought from eBay ties it all together. Still waiting for it to ship. Bedroom is painted. Need to paint bathroom (probably bm Hale navy) and vanity (bm cloud white) Found fun green knobs off Etsy. White shower curtain from RH with navy embroi stripe. Need to order curtains and Roman shades for bedroom. Looks all good in my head. I’m excited. :)...See MoreFunkyart
