Coal Basket with Gas Burner (Victorian Renovation/Rebuild/Restore)

Hello. We just moved into a renovated Victorian home (queen Anne) that was built in 1880 (15 month renovation). We tried for a wood burning fireplace or wood stove but because the fireplaces were built so small and narrow we have to use a faux coal burning gas fireplace (or spend thousands to rebuild the fireplace). I have attached a photo of the coal basket we purchased and burner. My builder is saying the burner is too small for the basket and I would say I agree. I was just wondering if anyone out there had any opinions, experience or thoughts on this topic. I have attached a photo. Do I need a larger burner? Can I just add more faux coal to make the burner look larger? instagram - blueberryabode
