Favorites on Netflix?

DH and I are always looking for some entertaining drama programs on Netflix, or good movies.. We watched all episodes of Breaking Bad, Bloodline, House of Cards, Heartland, The Crown and Longmire and are now looking for something else to draw our interest. No inane comedies, or anything with canned laughter, please. What have you been hooked on?

Have a free trial of Netflix this month. We've been enjoying Last Tango in Halifax.

Next on the list is Rectify if we decide to continue with the service.

We "borrowed" Grace & Frankie from the library. It's a Netflix series.

I'll be following this thread for suggestions.

    Sherlock. So good

Westwing if you haven't seen it. IMO, nothing will ever be as good as this show.

We enjoyed early seasons of Prison Break. It got less good as it went on.

    Early seasons of Dexter

Some smart@ss in my family put the Lady Gaga documentary at the top of the queue. Doesn't hurt that we like Lady Gaga, but sheesh, its not even in Blu-Ray. I just put 'Bitter Feast' on 'Save', with Mario Batali playing against type. "Bitter Feast 2010NR 113 minutes Director Joe Maggio's deliciously nasty comic morsel stars James LeGros as Peter Gray, a self-absorbed celebrity chef who goes off the deep end when pompous but influential food blogger JT Franks (Joshua Leonard) posts a scathing review. After kidnapping JT and shackling him in the basement, Peter administers a series of tortures but soon finds that his victim is far from helpless. What ensues is an epic battle between two towering egos."

We have Amazon prime and love it. We buy a lot of stuff from amazon, so the yearly fee is worth it just for that (free shipping on most items) There is a large selection of FREE tv and movies! Not all are free though. But the free stuff is quite a bit, so I search around and add the free ones I want to see to be watch list. Currently watching a 20 episode feature on WWII. Had started to watch Vikings Season 1 as well. Watched Airplane a few days back, lol Helps kill the time on the Elliptical machine!

Idiot Abroad is on my Netflix - and having come so highly recommended, I want that to be my first "new" series to watch. Maybe Netflix is not the same in all areas?? The thread - think it was called Netflix Question - was very interesting. It talked about how Netflix gives you lists of programs based on past viewing. Now it makes sense - "because you watched", etc. Most of what I was seeing was kid-related. I have 8 and 10 year old granddaughters and 1 and 3 year old grandsons, so there were choices from Thomas the Train to Glitter Girls. They watch TV here infrequently, but still the choices seemed to be related to their prior viewing. While there are thousands of codes to look up different movies and series, I have found that I can go on my tablet, computer or phone and type in actor, genre, movie name, etc., then add the choice to My List. On the TV, it is one letter at a time and only by title. We have had Netflix for years and I never knew that, maybe because I had no desire to watch on my computer, phone or tablet. Learn something new every day!! Thanks to all of you for your recommendations. I plan to update My List as soon as we finish the holiday festivities!!

Have you watched anything good on Netflix?

CindyMac, I have to retract my favorable comments re: Handmaids Tale as we just finished watching the 2nd season. Without giving anything away, some character's took a bizarre explicable turn which cheapened the story. And it was torture porn without any emotional relief. To lighten up, we are watching THE QUEER EYE on Netflix. Although some of the antics are a bit MUCH, the transformations are enjoyable.

    Oh we loved Prison Break!

DH and I and DS are binge watching Bloodline right now, trying to watch them all before DS leaves for school in mid Jan! It's so good.

Is 6 Feet Under on Netflix? Great series.

The Time in Between. It's in Spanish with English subtitles: A young seamstress rises to become an elite fashion designer during the
Spanish Civil War, and assists the British Secret Service by
embroidering coded messages in the seams of her dresses. Recommended here by Mtnrdredux and it's excellent!

Has anyone watched Grand Hotel? Another Spanish series. I watched El Tiempo Entre Costuras (The Time in Between) and enjoyed it, but people tell me that Grand Hotel is better.

I watch while on the elliptical every day and go through a series pretty quickly. I just started watching Lost. I watched part of the series when it first came out, but never got to finish it. Don't remember as many of the details as I thought I would, which is great. Glad to start a long running series that should last me more than a week!

terriks, you will love having the smart TV to watch while you use the treadmill. I just can't do series/movies with subtitles while exercising.

I wish Netflix would add more decriptions that highlight that it is a foreign movie/series with subtitles. I hate to search, choose, start it up and then realize that I can't watch it while working out.

Breaking Bad, Sherlock and Fargo have been favorites in our household.

I've started Shameless... you have to be in the right mood to absorb some of the shock.

I never started Orange is the New Black because I didn't care for the premise. But so many have recommended it that I may give it a try, too.

If you liked Breaking Bad - you might like Better Call Saul. If you go in not expecting it to be Breaking Bad - its its own series - you will enjoy highly satisfying storyline and characters - at least season 1. Hard to say where they're taking it. Ive also seen a number of excellent European made films set during WW2... there is a new honesty and realism they are bringing to this genre including a BBC version of Anne Franke that is devastating. Also loved Freaks and Geeks - Id not seen it back in the day. Very happy to recently find 2 Richard Linklater films - Boyhood & the classic Dazed and Confused.

I have several requirements for a netflix show -- it can't be too dark and depressing (e.g. Breaking Bad -- although I did like Dexter), it can't be subtitled or too "high-falutin". Basically, I want nice fluffy crime or medical procedurals where everything gets solved in the end. I mainly watch things while I work out or clean the house so it can't be too hard to follow. No sitcoms, though I love a good crime/comedy combo.

I also want it to last more than a season or two, and hopefully the whole run of the show is complete before I start watching it because I HATE ending on a cliffhanger and having to wait a year for the next season -- by the time the next season comes, I can never remember what happened. (Just finished Stranger Things (which was VERY good) and now I'm frustrated at the long wait til the next season!)

I really like when netflix recommendations are organized by category -- as in "if you liked X, you'll like Y" so that's what I'm going to do.

So basically, these are hilarious crime shows - if you like one, you should like all of them: Psych, Chuck, iZombie (only 2 seasons so far and cliffhanger wait til next season.) The show I am currently watching, Republic of Doyle, probably also falls in this category (6 seasons, Canadian show set in Newfoundland, everyone has adorable accents!)

These are good crime-type dramas - not too dark, kind of fluffy, with the heroes (not always cops) solving people's problems or catching the bad guy neatly in a single episode: Burn Notice, Leverage, White Collar, Breakout Kings. Of these, Leverage and White Collar were probably my favorite but they are all good.

Probably belonging in the previous category but deserving of a special mention is my all-time favorite show ever, Person of Interest. Created by the same people who made Lost and Fringe and starring a lot of the same actors but so much better than both of those, IMO. (I did watch Lost, but honestly, while it was absorbing while I watched it, I was confused by the end and kind of angry that I had put all that time into it only to wrap it up in such a weird way.) Person of Interest, on the other hand, ended well (though I am still sorry it ended at all!)

Other shows I loved: House, Prison Break, Dexter (though the last few seasons weren't all that great). On regular network TV, I like Gray's Anatomy and Criminal Minds (both of which I think you can stream back seasons)

Other shows I've watched that were just meh -- Revenge (fluffy but kind of stupid), Liar Liar (the show itself was great but it got cancelled mid-season and everything ends unresolved - I HATE that!!!!)

At any rate, I have about 2 more seasons of Republic of Doyle to go and then I'll be on the hunt for another show, so if anyone has any recommendations that fit my categories, I'd love to hear them!!!!)

So much good stuff already listed. (BTW, The Wire is available on DVD only for Netflix -- highly recommended!) I'll add: Broadchurch and The Killing. There aren't too many of the recs I haven't gone through (at least once or twice already), so am sitting down to lighter (but no less entertaining!) fare: Arrested Development.

"Last Cab to Darwin" - Aussie road trip movie - a dying man drives cross country thru Outback to reach a eauthanasia doctor .... and unexpected things keep occuring.

"The Imitation Game" fascinating true story of a sorta semi-autistic genius type who cracks nazi code thus shortening the war by several yrs.

Both these were good - and imho any movie that gets me to cry is good!

Wondering what other movie options are there besides netflix? Saw the last batch of listings of "new" films and its ALL CRAP - nothing but murders and weird .... and I do mean weird... sexual behaviors. Like to think Im open minded but Jeez Louise. Some things Id rather not know about.

I watch a lot of movies and Im to the point where Ive seen ev I want to see on Netflix basic membership -I would upgrade my membership except I realllly dont want to mess around with sending dvds back and forth--- ughhhh! Would much rather watch online?

Just finished the first episode of "Chef's Table" -- it is a documentary that follows a different chef each episode. The first one was about Massimo Bottura - chef and owner of Osteria Francescana in Modena Italy. It is ranked in the top 5 of the worlds best restaurants. Fascinating glimpse into a self-made chef - his humble beginnings and how he got to where he is today. If you enjoy food - this is especially good. But even if you're not a "foodie" - it's worth the time to watch.

Orange is the New Black - the first season is the best, as it goes on, the drama gets to the point of almost being unbelievable, although it is prison, so I am sure anything is possible.

We've been watching Twin Peaks on streaming Netflix. David Lynch is reviving it in May with 18 episodes. We never watched it in 1990-91--I was too busy for TV back then but I remember hearing so much about it. We wanted to get up to speed for the new series. Visually it's not so great because of its age, but it's a weird story with quirky characters and is getting better as the story develops. It reminds us of a Coen Brothers movie.

Decided to continue with Netflix for the time being. We're on the second season of Rectify, an almost poetic, slow, Southern drama.

Loved Twin Peaks! Didn't know there was a revival in the making, but just checked and I see it's on Showtime. Oh well.
