Have you watched anything good on Netflix?

I've watched When Calls the Heart which is very sappy but appealing nonetheless. Just finished Happy Valley which was good (some graphic stuff but not too bad).

I need to get going on something else!

Binge watching Gilmore Girls right now. I had seen some episodes before because they were reruns on tbs or tnt in the morning before my classes back in college. Apparently I had watched more than I thought because most of the earlier seasons had stuff I remembered watching before. I'm on Season 6 and it seems like Rory makes really horrible judgement calls on guys, as do Lorelai for the most part (except Max). I'm just finishing so I can watch the revival once it's out in November.

I cut my cable, so after watching the news (I have an indoor antenna that picks up all my big network stations), I switch to Netflix or Acorn TV (British shows). Fairly new on Netflix, I loved Ozark and Wanted. On Acorn TV, I've watched Australian TV, such as A Place to Call Home, Crownies, Janet King, and now Jack Irish -- all with Marta Dusseldorf. I finished watching George Gently and Doc Martin. A few of these, I had started watching on PBS, but now don't have to wait until they've finished in Britain before airing on my local PBS.

We got the audiobook to listen to on a trip. Michelle has a beautiful voice for reading and it is different than her public speaking voice. We found it so soothing that it was a bit hypnotic, not good for driving, so we set it aside. But the words were well-written. I have the print book and look forward to reading it. The documentary was just wonderful.

I admit watching good TV is one of my favorite hobbies, and I look forward to checking out these recommendations. I second Episodes with Matt Lablanc. I also loved Enlightened on HBO with Laura Dern, quirky character and heartwarming. I also enjoyed Jimmy Carter Rock n Roll President on Netflix (I'm a Georgian) and the documentary Crip Camp, a great story about birth of disability rights movement.

I watched Wanted. It's pretty good. Nice development of the relationship between the two women, such opposites.

We had friends over Sunday for dinner and movies. The unanimous vote was for Coco and The Secret Lives of Pets. Both animated. We all laughed so much out loud we scared Mia! She started barking at us lol. The animation and colors were awesome. If you want a fun movie try them.

Omg has anyone watched SAFE on Netflix? It is by Harlan Coben, one of our favorite authors. I knew it would be great everything he writes is awesome. Well we weren't disappointed. It is a great show. The guy who played Dexter is in it. We couldn't stop watching we went through 4 episodes last night. So far only one season. Highly recommend it.

I finished binge watching The Handmaids Tale. I watched the first episode months ago and didn't like. Friday night, I thought I would give it another shot. I'm home alone for the weekend and between cleaning the living room, kitchen and bathroom, I managed to watch all of seasons 1 and 2! I didn't get as much housework done as I planned on, but something is better than nothing. ;) Turns out, it's a really good show.

Raven, I watched Safe as well. If you can get over the main characters really bad British accent, the show is really good.

Debby, Handmaid's Tale isn't on Netflix. I borrowed season 1 DVD from the library and now I need to join Hulu to see season 2. Hope they're still offering a free trial.

I watched Safe too. Wasn't all that impressed. More in the category of a beach read for me.

Anyone watch "Room"? its a story of a girl and her son held captive or 7 yrs. Not sure if its true or just a story. Pretty good. "Like Father" was ok.

Based on the comments here, we watched Safe. We were disappointed with the show overall but I wasn't surprised. I don't recommend it.

I started reading Coben's books and continuing series with the amusing sports agent/detective and his loony friends some years ago but stopped because as I got to the more recently written books, it was as if he'd lost his mystery writing mojo. He fell into the trap of what I call lazy writing and it seemed that he did the very same thing with Safe.

Here's how imagine it's done. It could be different but this explanation is illustrative of what you find:

Outline a story, including all the key elements. Then start at the end and work backwards, write dialog and scenes for episodes but leave out essential details as you go in reverse. Then, when the depleted storyline is started from the beginning, there are key story bits omitted at the first pass and so it becomes a mystery. One that's hard to follow because it's like a jigsaw puzzle with pieces missing. Add in the details (which in Safe was often done as flashbacks at the start of each episode) especially toward the end and bingo, the real story crystallizes. The story doesn't develop with events that happen moving forward (as good mysteries do), it was all there at the beginning but not fully explained along the way. Bah, not cool.

There are many clever mystery writers around. Coben fell off the horse some years ago and I don't suspect he'll be getting back on.

I didn't agree with you. Is that a reason to criticize me? You're welcome to your opinion as I am to mine. Does it make you uncomfortable when others don't share your views?

I watched it on your suggestion, I just didn't think it was very good and I explained why. My comment wasn't about you. Try to return the courtesy.

    PS - edit to add

You forgot to jump on CindyMac, she didn't like it either. Her comment just a few above this.

JoAnn, I read Room when it came out, which was just about the same time the girl was rescued from the same situation in California with her two daughters. Uncanny timing. The book was excellent and quite disturbing. The movie didn't stick with me the same way the book did. But the actress was excellent.

I'm onboard with saying "not impressed". That's a succinct comment, an approach I should use more often. Mine was verbose because I explained why I didn't like it.

Debbie, we are watching THE HANDMAID’S TALE (Hulu) It is really harrowing and hitting too close for comfort. We thought we could breathe a sigh of relief as we approach the final episodes but I hear that Season 3 is in the works...grrr.

Haven't been watching any Netflix recently.........I can't seem to find much showing that interests me. Instead have been focusing on Acorn TV and more recently, on BritBox. IDK why but British (and Australian) TV shows and movies I find much more entertaining than just about anything generated by US writers/producers. Except for The Big Bang Theory, which always makes me laugh out loud :-)) Silly show but vastly entertaining! Can't wait for season 11 to start next month.

I signed up Thursday. Have watched 3 episodes of season 2. I haven't seen anything in recent time that's been so disturbing on so many levels. I'll be glad to finish this season and find some lighter entertainment. That said, the acting blows me away! No wonder the show won so many awards and is up for more this year.

CindyMac--my sentiments exactly! Elizabeth Moss doesn't even need dialogue-- she has the most expressive face on the planet. The entire cast is superb.

Upon completion we plan to decompress with TRANSPARENT (Amazon)!

    Totally agree!

I don't have Amazon, so I'll be looking for something on Netflix or maybe Hulu since I have it for a month. I saw they have Fences, but that's not exactly light. Any Netflix or Hulu recommendations?

  • nannygoat18

    Nothing on Hulu:(

“Halt and Catch Fire” (Netflix) is riveting but not light.

if you have HBO, “Curb your Enthusiasm” definitively fits the bill!

CindyMac, I have to retract my favorable comments re: Handmaids Tale as we just finished watching the 2nd season.

Without giving anything away, some character's took a bizarre explicable turn which cheapened the story. And it was torture porn without any emotional relief.

To lighten up, we are watching THE QUEER EYE on Netflix. Although some of the antics are a bit MUCH, the transformations are enjoyable.

CindyMac, we watched the first season of BT but found the humor was TOO dark. We are watching 90 Day Fiance: Before the 90 Days (on TLC) and screaming at the TV.
