Anybody watching 'Who Do You Think You Are?'
Comments (25)I've watched both episodes, and will continue to watch the rest of the 7-episode series (Lisa Kudrow, one of the exec producers of the show, will be this week's episode), but I have mixed feelings. As an avid genealogist, I think the series is great in that it shows folks how fascinating genealogy can be -- how it can help you to learn more about yourself by learning about those who came before you. On the other hand, I think it does a bit of a disservice by making it appear that it's so easy to find information to go back so many generations. Sarah Jessica Parker and Emmitt Smith both have a lot of money, and can afford to just jump on a plane to head off to a totally different area of our country, not to mention another country altogether; when the vast majority of us simply don't have that option. Another sticking point is that Sarah Jessica Parker and Emmitt Smith (and the other five celebs to follow in the coming weeks) have the benefit of several professional genealogists and archivists searching for information long before they arrive in town. The information is simply handed to them. They aren't spending hours upon hours looking at rolls of microfilmed records, etc. I have a World Deluxe membership to Ancestry.com. I have access to every record they have. Plus, I'm an arbitrator for submissions to Ancestry.com - both from the World Archives Project as well as corrections/suggestions that folks submit regarding records that are already online. Yet I continually hit a total roadblock when it comes to ancestors/family in Pennsylvania, because Pennsylvania has close to nothing available online. I wish it were as easy as the show makes it appear......See MoreDo You Do Anything Special For.....?
Comments (25)growing up we always had a bbq, the whole family together. some members would go to cemetery, but as soon as any decorations were put on graves here they would be gone the next day, so we stopped. i never went anyway, honestly i think its morbid but thats just my opinion...we always looked through albums. i know it sounds awful cold but i wont go to funerals at all. i do however think its in very poor taste when families do visit loved ones and plant something that your loved ones loved like say mums, something non invasive, only to go the next day and see a huge pile of everyones plants in a huge pile...boy that makes me madder than a wet hen!!!!...See MoreDo you binge watch?
Comments (16)Oh, yeah! (I posted this on an earlier thread that was created by someone alerting us to a "Katie" talk show episode relating to "Orange is the New Black" on Netflix, but I would be happy to share my TV addictions again! LOL!) It started with "Grey's Anatomy." I happened to see a rerun and then HAD to start with season 1. I knew about the show, but there was SOOO much coverage of it, and when that happens (whether TV, books...), I tend to not want to jump on the bandwagon. But I got hooked, and I was pumping every source possible to get the DVDs -- co-workers, neighbors, libraries, Blockbuster. I even bought one of the seasons when I couldn't find it for free or cheap elsewhere. (I ended up selling it through Amazon or eBay). Add these to my binge-watching: The Tudors House (there were a lot of episodes!) The Good Wife Parenthood How I Met Your Mother Orange is the New Black Lilyhammer (starring Steven Van Zandt from "The Sopranos" and Bruce Springsteen's band) Big Bang Theory I usually watch on Sundays while I'm trying to multitask -- Internet research (ok, shopping re-con!), laundry....See MoreWhen do you giive up and bing your plants in for winter?
Comments (22)I think I'm in zone 10...I brought in as many as I could (variegates, small plants just getting established, cuttings, hard to replace $$$ plants)... the trifasciatas stay outside on a north facing porch so they won't get rained on (they are used for landscaping here), I put many of the bigger pots (cylindricas, masonianas, etc.) right up against the north wall of the house under an eave and elevated so they won't get splashed with mud, I hope they'll be OK there. The C&S nursery I go to told me to pull them as close to the house as possible. Anyway, I'll take one of everything inside in case I misjudged or the temps dip. I don't know much about many of the species I have (cold-tolerance), some regions get cold, some don't....See Morehhireno
