Something fun, 1900 rose introduction
Comments (11)I have read that florists raised forced, potted roses for the holidays. Often, they were ramblers which had been pruned heavily to make topiaries covered in flowers. Of course, it was much later than this (mid to late fifties), but when I was a small child, my great grandmother grew huge Boston Ferns and a number of potted palms in her living and dining rooms in Birmingham, Alabama. Winter months, there were forced potted azaleas in the huge stone planters in those rooms. Spring and summer, the ferns went out in the huge stone planters on her porches. Comments (32)I came across this The Birds's Christmas Carol while trying to find a title for the Christmas connection game. I cant use it because Christmas is in the title, lol, but read the book as it is online. Published in 1886 by Kate Wiggins, it is the story of a young book loving girl, born on Christmas Day in New York who becomes ill....yes, sappy but what I would expect of s story of that time. What is interesting are the descriptions of the Christmas celebrations, and how it was celebrated. Some class contrasts, as well. I have included the link and read it for how a family Christmas was celebrated 150 years ago. :) Here is a link that might be useful: The Birds' Christmas Carol...See MoreShow us your best Craigslist or eBay bargain?
Comments (82)I love many of the finds pictured here. I live in an economically depressed, rural area, and most of Craigslist is uninspiring and often unintentionally funny. Some people have big ideas about what their junk is worth! We've done well in the Farm & Garden section, however, both buying and selling. This summer I acquired a riding mower for $375 delivered. The owner is a mechanic (turned out he retired from the company my son works for), and the mower was well cared for. But mostly I came back here to thank My3dogs for starting this thread. As soon as I saw the title, I remembered that it had been awhile since I last checked Craigslist for a cedar wardrobe. My house is very old, and has almost no closets. I've been keeping my various jackets in an ancient but worthless wardrobe that is ready to fall apart, so I've been looking for a good replacement for about a year. Most of the ones listed had no bar for hanging clothes, and were overpriced anyway. So I saw your thread and went directly to Craigslist, where I found the perfect cedar wardrobe: just the right size, with a bar inside the top and a nice drawer on the bottom--for $75! The people even agreed to keep it for me until after Christmas, when my son can get it with his pickup. Thanks, and happy holidays to all!...See Morestillanntn6b
