What bird is this?

Came in a flock of at least 15. About the size of a robin. All black with a brown breast.

Are you sure it wasn't a robin? Females have darker chests than males. If the whole head was also brown, could be a brown-headed cowbird. Can you describe the beak or provide a photo?

Looks exactly like a robin, beak and all. Believe me I know what a robin is. They had to be migrating as I don't see them anymore. All black, with a BROWN breast.

I think many birds will gladly eat them while they're smallish. Once they get large, it's probably only the more dedicated insectivores that will go for them. Like cardinals. Here's video of a cardinal eating a similar sized caterpillar that could be a hornworm. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktWIEnqKK34 (Warning: the video is a little gross, as the bird really mangles the caterpillar). I haven't personally seen cardinals in the act of eating a hornworm, but something must be doing so because I only find about 2 a year, but I see the moths in my yard. And cardinals do like to nest in my neighbor's hawthorn bush and use my garden as an insect larder.

LOL! Yes tree frogs are incredibly loud! I had about 5-6 singing to each other yesterday evening in the back yard and I could hardly hear my family talking to me while out on the deck! They are really hard to find too. I have one that retires to a little ledge on the top of my shed every year.....same spot. He's so cute! I love going to sleep with my windows open so I can hear them, but sometimes, I just have to close the window 'cause they are sooooooo loud! They are pretty amazing little creatures. I think they are attracted to my backyard because I have several little water gardens. They deposit their eggs in the water. They are so sensitive to the presence of water, that if I go out to just water a few plants, they start singing! I don't know if they see the water, or just hear or smell it! Ain't nature grand? :)

Yep, colours work out. Today I had the male show up too. Both birds are walking very diligently through my flower bed in search of seeds. They make quite a different sound when startled.

What bird says "flibbity jibbit"?

It's not a wren. My wren says "kiddeo kiddeo kiddeo." I listened to wrens' sounds online and it wasn't there. My wrens appear in plain view for me. Love them. Flibbidy jibbit is exactly what the bird says! It repeats it about 8 times and stops. It's always from high in the trees. I looked up the vireo's song and it isn't that. I've never seen a vireo where I live. Thank you both. I'm still trying to figure this out.

The only thing I can think of are towhees, but they have some white, and I've never seen them in big flocks.

Sorry I'm not sure... That has me stumped as well. I'll try to get back to you... But where did you see the birds and when? (As in, season to know if they're just migrating or a native bird).

They were at my feeder, and birdbath, last Sat. about noon. Have never seen them before, and they were there only that one time, so I'm sure migrating.

There are half a dozen subspecies of American robin. The ones from Newfoundland are sometimes called "black-backed robins", and in addition to being much darker than the more common subspecies are somewhat larger. Birds from the rain forests of the pacific Northwest are also very dark. Probably what you saw was an adult male bird from one of those subspecies.
