Maytag 5500 vs Electrolux 617

I've been reading your posts off and on for years! We had been planning on Maytag 5500 washers for the home we are building, but today our sales guy said that we could move into the Elecrolux and get $100 back since he could resell the Maytags for more than we paid last year (prices have risen in Canada due to the exchange rate).

The difference in money doesn't really impact us at all, but if the machine is actually better I would be happy to switch.

We have a young family and two German Shepherds on an acreage, so things get dirty. I will be cloth diapering the impending addition which seems to challenge some machines, although I never had any issues with my old LGs.

I am realistically tied to one of these two machines, but if anyone can recommend one over the other I would be very grateful!

The Maytag offers steam for stains option for about all wash cycles except the cold only. Steam for stains will gradually heat from tepid or warm to hotter temperatures and will make sure the heater is engaged. Have a friend who has the 8200 and says the Power Wash cycle goes through periods of very fast speed tumbling (almost a slow spin during peirods of the wash phase and the cycle allows selecting more than just hot. The 5500 offers Allergen (which assures temps being reached to 130 degrees. If this model is like mamapinky's Duet, the Sanitize cycle won't reach super hot temps but on her Duet, it appears that when extra hot is selected on Allergen, the water temperature gets hotter than 130 degrees. The Electrolux has a reversible door. I suggest you download and study the features of the Elux 617 and how temps and processes are done with the various stain and steam options (I did so I could try and compare the two machines. The Maytag doesn't have a prewash option, but a rinse & spin could accomplish that task. .

Thanks for the response. Pregnancy brain has been striking hard here! Apparently the Maytag washer is the 8200, we just dropped down the dryer. I'm hoping I'll have some time tomorrow to read more of the manuals.

Trying to get this house finished while living in an RV with a toddler and 2 big dogs while 8 months pregnant (that has left me almost unable to walk) and temps hitting -30 has taken more of my brain thought and this unexpected decision has apparently been my limit!!

No need to drown readers with input. But a facts are helpful. # of loads. type of loads, f.ex. whites, towels, poly workout etc. enzyme/non-enzyme detergent? very different results with Method liquid vs Persil Pro Clean f.ex. temperatures tested i.e how hot is the hot wash? You told us 125F. Is that as hot as it goes? Internal heater? Number of cycles & Range of cycle lengths These are quick facts that should be known up front. A pretty interface is fine though it doesn't do anything for me. Who cares if the machine mixes -- I put all the stuff in first. I want it to work best not stupidist. Also why certain things, like a heater and number of cycles are important and why they are not. Then folks can adjust response to their needs.

I have 15-year-old front loader washer and dryer. We got the pedestals, and I have to say they are nice--I like the drawers underneath where my kids put their dirty socks and other unmentionables after sports practice. I also appreciate not bending over so far to get inside. Mine are one of the original frontloaders and I've had 2 repairs on them that I can remember. They perform very well but I'm careful to use HE laundry detergent and only half the amount, at most. I also don't vary the cycles much so I'm not challenging the electrical components (or so that's my theory). Because of their age, I know we're nearing the end of their lives but I'm willing to do a few more repairs unless they completely break down. I also blow them a kiss and thank them each time they complete a cycle. I swear this is the key. I keep my washer door cracked open a bit when not in use to avoid the smell. It makes sense if you think about it--to keep a FL leak-free during a cycle vs. a TL, the seal must be more tight when closed. A TL still has some air circulation when the lid is down.

I have the SQ TR7 I haven't noticed any clothing tearing going on whatsoever, but neither did I with a Maytag we had for 31 years (with 2 kids), nor with a Samjunk we had for 4 years (without the kids). While the Samjunk was just that, junk, it didn't tear clothes up, it just needed repairing every 8 months until the final repair was supposed to cost $600 to which we said no to. Samjunk dryers are not any good either, while ours only had one repair about 3 years ago, the motor now sounds rough, and now I have to turn the drum to make it run if the dryer has sat for more than a few hours. We are going to buy another SQ this weekend, but can't decide on the DR7 or the DC5. Samjunk fridges are so bad there is a massive class action lawsuit against them, so far no word on a settlement. Ours freezes up inside the fridge part, and I have manually defrost it about once every 3 months. I still have it, not sure what I'll get when it dies since SQ doesn't make fridges. It amazes me is that year after year Consumer Reports rates Samjunk as the highest quality??? Why hasn't CR bothered to check the class action lawsuits they had against the washing machines and the fridges?? Strange, makes me wonder if CR is getting a cut.

SimmTalker, A simple method to run the machine with the lid open if you want to directly check the temperatures .... remove the latch part from the edge of the lid and place it down into the lock mechanism. Two screws involved, I think they may be Torx so you'd need to buy a Torx screwdriver of the correct size (or a set of multiple sizes can be had) if you don't have one. Replace the latch back into the lid when done checking. Or, you can leave it "tricked" to facilitate checking cycle operation whenever you wish ... the machine may require the latch be pulled from the lock after a cycle for it to confirm the lid has been opened before it'll run I had thought of doing that when I first bought it last year (because it was annoying the heck out of me), but hated messing with a brand new washer. But.....it really shouldn't hurt anything, and would make it much more user friendly.....I may just do that :)

boba1 gave you good advice.

I'd want a guaranteed hot wash on any machine. So #1 check to see if it has an integral heater. #2 see if it guarantees allergen. Allegeren has become the gold standard for machines with heaters these days. You know the diapers can be properly hot washed.

I believe I read that sanitize is 152 degrees for the Electrolux.

Hi there! Have you decided on a machine yet? Your situation sounds very similar to mine...I'm 7 months pregnant with child no.7. We're trying hard to get our house finished so we can move in by the end of this month. Meanwhile we're living in our tiny guest house while the children slept in the camper....and we're in Montana and the temps have been as low as -30 with lots of snow.

My current laundry setup leaves a lot to be desired! My dryer is outside on our porch, which means that even when temps are well below 0 I have to go in and out the door many times a day changing loads. And boy does the poor dryer groan! Doing laundry for a family of 8 is a feat by itself, without throwing in those little twists to make it more interesting. I just pulled the trigger on my two washers and dryer today. I was pretty certain, for various reasons, that I wanted the 60 series iq touch washer and the 70 series wave touch dryer. Long story short, I ended up with 2 60 series washers and the 617 dryer. All are the titanium finish so should match well enough. I'm also planning to cloth diaper so that was definitely a factor I weighed in my decision. I'd love to know what you got and how you like it, if you've been able to use it yet.
