Can you explain that a bit better, what you are actually re-setting. ? What numbers are you putting in? A password or wep key type thing ?

What windows version, each version may have different diagnostics to run.

Am I correct, you are using an Ethernet Cable to connect while you wife is using Wireless? I've listed 4 things below that you could give a try, none of them are extremely hard to do! I don't have them listed in any specific order (even though they are numbered).

1. Try Unplugging the Modem and Router for about 1 minute. After the minute is up, plug them back in, see if that has helped.

2. You could also try a Different Ethernet RJ45 Cable to see what happens.

3. You could also try another Ethernet Port on your Router

4. Finally, you could try plugging the Modem Straight to the Computer VIA Ethernet RJ45 Cable

Since Windstream is
your provider, my first question is...what modem are you using? Is it
a modem that was provided by WS? I’m going to make a guess that the
answer is no because you are using a separate router. In my
experience, that is uncommon (I also have WS). In this area, WS
likes to provide their own unit which is both a modem AND wireless
router in one (mine is a Sagem 1704N) and it works pretty well. My
connection is always “ON” without ever having to reset or change
anything. I can’t guarantee that this would solve anything, but if
your devices aren’t talking to each other properly it might. Also I
think you will find that WS does not offer any assistance with
equipment other than their own.

It might be worth a
call to find out what is involved in getting a new modem/router from
WS. It would probably mean paying a monthly rental fee (~$10)...as
far as I know WS won’t sell you a modem outright.

Among the ethernet properties there is the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4). Instead of using the automatic IP settings in that properties, I changed these settings and have been able to get online. However, I now have to manually do this after each shutdown. I find it a pain to do so daily. Perhaps, I am lazy?

Both of our machines are using Windows 10. Mine is an upgrade from Win 8.1 and my wife's was purchased with Win 10.

Our modem is a Sagem 4300. You mentioned keeping your computer on all the time. When I used a desktop, I did too. However, with a laptop, I've been turning it off at bedtime. We're in a rental property with the Windstream dsl already here, so why change. However, we've used a home network for years and recently replaced our LinkSys router after about 12 years with a Tp-Link one.

The puzzling thing for me is that this set-up has worked with few problems for several years except for a new router about 5 months ago. My desire is to get the system back to where it was until very recently.

Could this be an indication that something is dying a slow death?

So you're basically doing this below and you're entering DNS numbers, Like 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, But not necessarily those numbers.

Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties Use the following DNS server addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 , select Obtain DNS server address automatically

But "you" are not selecting "Obtain DNS automatically." So every reboot you need to enter the DNS numbers again ?

Is that what you're doing ?

Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties window there should be two tabs, General Tab and Alternate Configuration.

On the General Tab you should see:

1. Obtain an IP Address Automatically (Check it)

2. Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically (Check it).

Second Tab, Alternate Configuration, you should see:

1. Automatic Private IP Address (Check it).

I think it's evident that one or more of your devices are not properly configured, and my guess is its the newer router since it seems that is when the trouble started. It would be best to have another set of eyes on the problem...perhaps one of your neighbors is also using WS. Ideally, the best choice would be to have the Windstream tech come out and really they should since it is a WS modem, but they may not want to deal with the non-WS router. If you did get the tech to come out, in my experience they would be eager to replace your current modem with a known good modem and would be forced to configure it properly and if they gave you a combination unit (modem and wireless router) your present router would no longer be needed. If this worked, you should be able to just turn on the computer, start your web browser and go without entering any numbers.

BTW, I do not leave my computer on all the time. I said my connection is always "ON"...meaning it is ready to use whenever needed.

I had waited a few days to see if our adjustment would hold. At this time, all is well. We went back and followed bugspop1 advice of making sure the right area were checked. Thanks to all for the assistance.

Glad it's working now. Just seemed like since your wife was connecting fine, you should be too, that is unless the settings weren't correct! Hope you have a Merry Christmas also!
