Why do people walking their dogs let them go in my yard?
Comments (58)I found this thread by accident and am very happy that I'm not the only person in the world who doesn't like dog - or any droppings for that matter - in my yard. We live on a corner and it amazes me how people will allow their dogs to run 20 feet up into my yard on one of those 'wonderful' retractable leashes. To me that's trespassing, plain and simple. On more than one occasion I have flung open a window and shouted quite loudly 'CAN YOU KEEP YOUR DOG OFF MY GRASS PLEASE', and then slammed the window shut so they got the hint that not only didn't I appreciate it but let them know they could be seen. I mean, what is it about windows, they think you can't see out?? And I don't care if they pick it up, it's STILL there. If you doubt me, go step on the grass where someone has just 'picked it up' and then sniff your shoes. Nice, eh? It's still on the top of the grass and you're gonna track the smell everywhere you walk. My favorite is what happened recently - I walk a treadmill in the evenings after dinner when many people walk their dogs, and I can see out two windows, one on the side of the house and one in the front. One evening I see a couple come walking two big dogs, a couple I've seen before, not every day but off and on. Never really paid much attention to them, I just see them through the window when they go by. On this particular night I'm walking, and I see them coming back from the end of the street, and I saw a bag in her left hand and thought, Oh, well that's good, at least they're one of those walkers who picks up. And as I'm looking at them - and this all happened in a matter of seconds - she suddnely turns towards her husband (which meant she was turned away from my house so I'm just seeing her back), she kind of leans in towards her husband, like she's saying something to him, then straightens back up and continues walking. As they continued walking, I notice a bag at the edge of the neighbors grass across the street and immediately looked at her hand. No bag. So here you have someone who probably picks it up but then will simply drop the bag somewhere so they don't have to take it home. As hubby said, not only is that a really low thing to do, it's littering. So I got in my car and followed them to see where they lived - which was in a completely different neighborhood than ours so obviosuly they come to OURS to do this - and then after dark I retrieved the bag and 'returned' it to them by tossing it up onto their driveway. I was really hoping it would still be dark when they left for work in the morning and they would drive right through it. At any rate, no one has seen them since, which I would hope is because they're too embarrassed to be seen on our street knowing they were caught doing something so unkind, and also because they now know WE know where they live. And like my husband says, we're pretty sure this probably isn't the first time they've done this, they just never got caught before....See MoreMy dog terrifies people who come to our front door...What to do?
Comments (47)Labmomma- Did I say anything about court? :-) Let me tell you the nutshell version of a story of how the dog whisper helped probably save our furry little behinds. I told this story on another forum and all the cesar-haters came out and told me how stupid i was so you're getting the short version. After watching the show, I decided I would make more of an effort to keep the dogs to my side instead of in front of me while on walks. I wouldn't say they had a pulling problem but the one would pee on everything in sight and the pup was starting to learn how that looked like fun so I felt like it was time to see if I can walk the dogs how cesar does on tv. And no I didn't contact a professional before using the technique like it says in the disclaimer! I thought I'd take a chance. Well after some time walks became a lot more enjoyable and didn't need someone to reinsert my arm into it's socket if a squirrel ran by and there's no more pee-mail. So there's something to be said for more structured walks and not letting the dogs go first. That's only half of it. Ok so we're on a sidewalk where some rednecks keep their pitbull looking dogs out in their yard and never walk them or probably do anything remotely responsible so the dogs had tunnneled under the fence. I didn't know this until a mean looking growling and barking dog ambushes us. My first instinct: soil trousers. My second instinct: must get out of here.* â note there is a "*" Normally these dogs of mine are very friendly, they think every person and dog is their friend and wants to give them cookies. They are personalities that people would kill for in a dog. The mean dog is circling us and I was trying to act like i didn't notice and wanted the boys to play along like we were all wearing iron clad armour. They stayed with the program, focusing on me and where we were going, not jerking me away to go mess with the mean dog. We managed to evade persuit, not getting bitten. I credit the dog whisper show for making me aware that perfecting the walk was possible and it paid off big. Now for that * I was talking about. On a recent episode Cesar talked about what do do in a situation where if you are face to face with a mad dog, you don't turn around and run away. He didn't give instructions on what to do, it was the post office seminar episode, but whatever we're still alive and the dogs did not engage thank god. He also says to be calm and assertive and not show fear. I would be very surprsied if I was not showing or smelling like fear but I'm sure I probably was pretty calm and assertive....See Moreloose aggressive dog on walk, need help
Comments (16)Where I live dog attacks happen and often end badly. My town requires 3 reports before they get involved with citations, providing it didn't involve something very serious. My dog was attacked and required an emergency visit. I reported it. Unfortunately, the next 2 attacks didn't report. After the last one involved a child, the bad dog owners moved out in the middle of the night. No dummies there. If you have a humane officer or animal control department, see if you can get some assistance with ideas on how to proceed. They deal with this every day. These people work for you, the tax payer. You may need to take this farther to make safety changes. What if this was a kid? document the incident and keep a copy just for the future. You may not need it, I hope not. Notes on a calendar are fine. But, you need to protect your self. Is the dog outside all the time? Is it tied up when they aren't home? Some cities have strict tie up laws. Can you change your walk time? We had to do that. Some owners are oblivious to dogs moods and attitude. Other owners are down right scary. Some, like my neighbor, believes leash laws apply to everyone else but him. invisible fence requires a battery in the collar to zap the dog if they cross the line. Owners forget to change the batteries so the dog may not have gotten the zap. People not want to get involved. During my attack, I backed out into traffic hoping it would stop those dogs. Only when I started screaming "fire" did i hear the owner call the dogs. I know he heard the whole attack. No one helped. I walked home with my bleeding dog and trying to remain upright. I was terrified and 15 years later, still very anxious when i walk my dog. i used to love walking my dog 2 miles a day. No more. So be careful and realize the leash is an extension of your arm. Your fear runs down your arm and into the leash. Your dog feels the negative energy and in turn can project aggressive feelings you might not sense. I have found talking or singing to her when we approach a crazy dog behind a fence helps keep her brain focused on me and it calms me down, too. If its loose, I get the heck out of Dodge ASAP. Comments (2)From afar, with nothing to go on but your verbal description, and since there is only SPECULATION about the cause of overflowing -- not confirmed facts -- the advice is no more than speculation about the prognosis. A "dip," though it wouldn't be a great thing in a drain line, may or may not make a difference in flow. (Degrees matter.) If the drain overflowed but was not clogged, it seems that it didn't measure up to the capacity needed. This is a common problem. 4" lines are used even when 6" and 8" lines should be installed. A french drain being installed along the foundation MAY help, but the term "french drain" means different things to different people, so the details will matter. For all practical purposes, during a hard rain, it's not going to matter if there is foliage or roots "to absorb water." It will come down to grading and drainage. Rocks around a drain won't necessarily matter either, unless they wash & clog the drain. If debris is clogging the drain opening, a good thing to do would be to install a drain cage. Chances are, though, that your real problem is capacity....See MoreBluebell66
