My dog attacks my other dog whenever I walk into the room.
Comments (11)Hi DHS, Has Kennedy always done this, or did she initially accept the situation and calmly get along with Little Bit? If she has always done it, has something changed to make you more concerned lately? What is different? If it is new behavior, what changed around the same time as Kennedy's behavior? Think about all of these things. Think about exactly what Kennedy does, how she does it, what she looks at, when does she start the behavior, what stops it, and if there are changes in the environment that make her attacks better or worse. Write all these things out, keep notes. Have everybody in the family write what they see during these attacks. Don't say things like "Kennedy got jealous and attacked Little Bits when she was sleeping on the couch." Since we cannot know what is going on inside her, saying she is "jealous" or "scared" or "dominant" does not help. Instead, say, "I opened the door and came in from the garage and as soon as Kennedy saw me, she jumped up. She ran in circles barking for about thirty seconds. I could tell she was excited because the hairs on the back of her neck stood up and she was bouncing up and down on her front legs, which she held stiff. She darted toward me once, then ran to where Little Bits was sleeping next to the arm of the couch and jumped on the couch and grabbed Little Bits my the scruff of her neck with her teeth and shook her a bit. Little Bits squealed and yipped, so I knew she was scared." See, describe behaviors. Then the behaviorist can use her own observations and info you have gathered to give you the best advice....See MoreReasons why people get rid of dogs.
Comments (12)jpw, it may be cynical, but it's realistic. I bet I've seen every one of these excuses on craigslist or in newspaper ads or on signs in the neighborhood; people who work in rescue probably do get cynical & burned-out, much as social workers get cynical & burned-out, & for the same reasons. I my own self once personally spoke with a woman who said she was going to start her own rescue, & she even had someone lined up to provide a maternity home for pregnant dogs & cat s, because....she didn't believe in abortion. & as for: "Press 10 if your relative has died and you don't want to care for their elderly dog because it doesn't fit your lifestyle."... I once was in line at the grocery store when a woman's cell phone rang & she blithely rattled off something like the following: "Human Services? yes, this is Mrs. Whatsis. I was calling to get my mother enrolled in Medicaid. She has to be enrolled in Medicaid before the nursing home will take her. We sold her house & she's staying with us at present, but we just can't give her the time she needs." then, with a touch of pride, "We have *five* children." oh. so neither you (fit-looking woman probably in her forties) nor any of your *five* children can take care of Granny?.. The only thing that gave me comfort was that her equally fit-looking daughter, who looked to be in her late teens, was standing by her side, absorbing every word, maybe storing it for future use when this woman got old....See MoreI'm p1ssed - why do they let them???
Comments (21)Oh my this is quite a touchy issue! I could not find any more of the 3 foot dollar store fency things yesterday, and I have calmed down. There are still other dollar stores to look and at the very least I can still erect something on the corners and post the sign. I do love the idea of snapping a photo but again... I don't want to add to a negative community feeling since I have very good neighbours at this end. Don't want to appear to be a grouch. She normally walks her dog about 6:30 pm - a good time for me to 'water' outside. Besides, she does have a lovely dog and if I could nicely say hello, pet the dog and just mention again my concerns in a diplomatic way I'd probably see a better result. If that doesn't work, then the gloves are off and I will be out with my camera and I will make a garden sign with one of those red lined circles over the top of it to embarrass her since I'm sure her neighbours also pass by walking home from the bus. Okay, there's a little mean streak there (part of my obsessive depressive disorder - which I am working hard to overcome - NOT healthy at all). Thanks for the tips and comments. It's always good to look at both sides of the coins. As for wildlife poop - I've not noticed any in my lawn or garden...but I'm sure they pee some where! Comments (34)I suggest watching cesar millan videos on youtube about how to walk a dog. My neighbor's dog, a lab, was pulling her all over the place. I took the dog for a walk and within 10 min, I had her by my side, paying attention to me, no pulling. When I was fostering my brother's dog after his death, a 110-lb golden, he was pulling like mad and no way could I control him. So again, using Cesar's techniques, within a few minutes, I had him heeling perfectly. The discipline of the walk starts at the door. You have to be the first one out, and the dog needs to wait for you to ask him out, not go charging out in front. Dog language is very simple...whoever is in front is in charge. So the dog needs to be at your side or slightly behind. You need to be literally the leader. One of the most effective techniques I've found that he uses is one of surprise and distraction...you can have the dog stand or sit next to you and as soon as you see the dog start to focus on something, lift your foot on the side opposite the dog, reach it behind you and touch the dog on his leg. (This is not a kick! This is simply touching them with your toe.) It surprises them and immediately distracts them from what they were focusing on and puts 100% of their attention on you, which is exactly where you want it. Another important element is to keep the collar, whichever one you use, up near their head like they do in the kennel shows. That's where the dog is sensitive and will feel it. If you have the collar down closer to their shoulders and you pull on it, their reaction will be to pull in the opposite direction. That's what dogs do...and we've all seen it where dogs are pulling so hard that they are actually strangling themselves, and yet they keep pulling....See MoreUser
