I like to watch Salvage Dawgs.

So far the rest of the programs aren't too exciting. But it's better than the real estate shows that have taken over HGTV.

Love salvage Dawgs. A few good shows we watch but I don't think I would pay for it separately.

Salvage Dawgs was on in the last few days but i must have been busy with other things. Right now I can't even remember which shows I felt I was missing out on. hoping for better programming soon!

A sober assessment of many other channels might lead to a similar conclusion, moonie.

West End Salvage is also one of my 'must sees'. For sure there are less worth watching than in the past. It is too bad.

Haha, Elmer, so very true! My husband says he doesn't even know who I am anymore, based on my tv viewing. He watches zero reality tv shows and I watch them all, sometimes gasping at the obsurdities of it all. But I love the competition type shows.. survivor, amazing race, etc. since retiring I have become my dad, who would watch almost anything.

I'll keep an eye out for Renovation Realities and West End Salvage.

I do like Salvage Dogs. DH and I actually stopped in and browsed their store last winter while traveling to Louisiana. Expensive stuff, for me anyhow.

Love First Time Flippers and Renovation Realities. Rob is exactly right, these people truly show just how hard renovating is. And I will also confess, I like when they have things go wrong. A couple examples, blowing out a window with a power washer, wall framing falling on people or falling apart, getting shocked by electrical outlets, falling off stuff. I'm sorry!!!! I can't help it. I laugh!

So many programs on these channels have evolved into a sameness of style that I find boring and even off-putting. The pseudo-reality show, the construction show when you find out next time what happens when Will tries to strip wallpaper in the bathroom with a meat cleaver and his daughter Jenny tells him she's failing algebra but having an affair with the teacher so it should come out okay.

Maybe 15 years ago or more, I could enjoy an occasional History Channel show. When the programs were like documentaries. Today, they have pseudo-documentaries, poorly done recreations/dramatizations, and an element of (again) reality TV that makes the shows, that repeat hour after hour, unwatchable for me. Even some PBS non-fiction shows have followed this style, I really can't sit still to watch them.

I don't watch TV anymore other than sports and streamed movies. I get news from reading newspapers. I don't think I'm missing anything.

Thread derailing: katlan, have you ever noticed the notes on those shows, the writing on the screen? I wonder if the producers/camera crew sees them getting ready to shock themselves and get hit in the head but say nothing (the homeowners will say to each other, we should have turned that off before starting and the writing will say "Do you think so?!"), or they are told not to interfere or do know? What are your thoughts?

P.S. First Time Flippers is on right now.

Elmer, like the History and PBS channels, NatGeo has followed that same trend. I like a lot of the shows but my husband doesn't. NatGeo has been having nice programming on he would probably enjoy, but won't give it a chance.

Katlan and rob, when I see the mistakes on some of those shows it looks scripted to me a lot of the time. I particularly notice it on Flip and Flop, one of my favs which I think has run its course with me.

Having been in the position that the home owners are enough times... it could very easily be what happens. Not sticking up for them. It's just that I can remember times I've said "Honey, you need to put on eye protection if you're going to grind down that _______" and he'd come back to me with a shard of metal in his eye saying "I should've put on my goggles!" Sure, we'd giggle, but you see a lot of that stupidity on Renovation Realities and First Time Flippers. I can see myself in those who are FTF. Ugh. So naive. I've come a long way baby.

Guess I am blessed to have a husband who came VERY CAPABLE of any sort of renovation. Our first years of marriage many a Sundays were spent watching PBS's This old House and The New Yankee Workshop...I have always been amazed at how well my guy can do a job. TIME is the one element these shows sort of give a false impression about. It takes a lot of patience to live through any sort of reno!!

Yes, mine has also become VERY CAPABLE but also very slooow. We have been under one kind of construction or another for a year or better. We make mistakes but dont find most of them funny at the time. Funny to watch but not to do! lol

This Old House has changed so much. There was a time i was crushing on Norm, now its Tom. ;) Seriously, i admire their skill set.

Rob I do notice the captions, which crack me up lol. I never thought of them as being scripted. I figured the captions were added during editing. I have seen people do some of the things these people do. I just think they are so entertaining.

Barnwood builders! Caught a couple of episodes and loved it.

Wish we could return to the days when This Old House was about REGULAR people fixing typical REGULAR problems around the house.
