Penny? and Mary Beth on Food Network

Do you think Penny was sabotaging Mary Beth, tonite? Think some of the judges thought so.

It's not over, but that's my opinion.

Jubilation! My 2 sisters and friend are visiting my mom's house for the weekend. This morning, while I was still at my apartment, my sharp-eyed sister spotted a female hummingbird at my home made feeder by the window. She told my mom, who was also sitting at the table, eating breakfast, and they were both thrilled to see her. They were so excited that they shouted up to my sister's friend, unconcerned that my other sister was still sound asleep and on California time! Mary Lou, the friend, (how can I put this delicately?) was upstairs in the bathroom, and came charging downstairs, with no idea what the hubbub was all about. She thought for sure that there was some grave medical emergency and was no doubt wondering if she should dial 911. By the time she got downstairs, the little lady was gone, but Mary Lou got to see her later when she returned within the hour to sip at the feeder. They said she came at least 3 times during the morning hours, and I got here about noonish, but haven't seen her. I'm putting some fresh nectar out, and at the moment, the feeder's sitting in the freezer, cooling down as quickly as possible so I can put it outside again. I am so psyched! It looks like we're finally getting a regular, and much earlier than last year. The native columbines are in full bloom, and I also have what I think are Salvia coccinea that are blooming lightly. It's been so darn cold and wet that the Salvia is sulking a wee bit, but I know that when we get back to normal May temperatures, the swelling buds will burst into bloom. I've got some "Billy Green" Fuchsia in an 18" pot, so hoping it will bloom soon so I can see if it's as good as Gartenmeister Bonstedt. My Monarda, "Gardenview Scarlet" is also looking good, but no flowers yet. ..And this just in... While writing the previous paragraph, with the feeder still in the freezer, my sister shouted again that she was back and looking in vain for the feeder. I dashed to the freezer, grabbed the cooling feeder, and raced out the door in time to see her giving up and zipping off to the Steinmetz's house, across the street and diagonal from us. "Oh come back," I shouted foolishly, but she didn't listen. They've got lots of flowers over at the Steinmetz house, so I imagine she's enjoying a fine dining experience over there. The feeder's out again, and I'm hoping she'll reappear. Unlike our one-time male, it looks like she's here to stay. I am so, so happy! Can you tell?

Glenda, What you said is so true, and for decades now, if you say you eat or garden organically, a lot of people instantly lump you into that whole 1960s-hippie-back-to-the-land-movement (not that I mind that). Even when we moved here in 1999 and I put a big organic veggie garden in the front pasture, between the road and the house, everyone thought I was crazy. The old farmers and ranchers couldn't wait to tell me how I was doing stuff wrong and was going to fail. They didn't think much of my wide raised beds, narrow paths, hay mulch, companion plants ("you're wasting space on weeds") and (horrors!) my reliance on manure and compost instead of liquid fertilizers. When I refused to use pesticides, they gave up on me. One even said to me "You probably do yoga and eat granola". (I do! LOL) They also weren't impressed with the appearance of my heirloom tomatoes, which were the wrong colors, too lumpy and bumpy, etc. You know what, though? Every now and then over the years one or another of them has asked me about an organic solution for this or that, so I've won over a few of them. There are aspects of the green movement that bother me, including the way the government dumbed down the organic standards and allow practices which devoted organic gardeners never would use, but for which the commercial industry had lobbied. I do think a lot of the green news we hear has more to do with marketing than with doing anything for the right ethical reasons. Still, I do see lots of folks (many of them right here on this forum) who are quite serious about gardening in the most healthy way, eating organically when possible, etc. That gives me hope that we're realizing there's a better way to raise food and take care of Mother Earth too. The spice place made me nuts, but in a good way. I didn't want to leave. Tim just stood in the pepper room talking on his cell phone while I put bag after bag in the basket. At one point I handed him the basket to hold for me while I was looking for the turmeric, and he headed for the cashier's register, thinking I was done. I had to chase him down and say "Wait, I'm not finished yet!" LOL Silly guy. Just because the basket was full, he thought I was finished shopping. I want to know why Fort Worth has all these interesting food places now---they didn't have them when we lived there. Dawn

Evening ladies.. Ok Remy I knew I forgot something. The Surise Seranade Morning Glory... Thanks so much.. It was on my want list.. Sue sent me the cutest pillow with our logo on it.. it is pink with pink hearts on it.. I love it.. she also sent me a gfct for DL and splish splash geranium in the spring.. So I have some cool things to yak about.. First I took some seeds off my spirea blue and put them in a baggie to see what I would get, I mean I didn;t even take off the chaff (sp) I just stuck them on a coffee filter, and I think that there are about 50 little sprouts.. I stuck the whole darn filter in some dirt.. I am not even sure why, because I really don't want anymore blue spirea, but that is pretty neat.. So I am trying it with Snow Queen clemtis and Ann Marie (the coolest variagated clem). Second, Springhill (which I am not fond of their plants all all the time) but they sent me a cat. with a $25.00 free offer on the front.. Problem is I ended up ordering just a touch over which I swore I would not do, but that new blue toad lily.. WOW!! So if you don't get the cat. maybe sign up over the net and see if you get it in time for the offer.. Ps.. Dizzy and Giverny win the lotion by the way... SO... For a stone pink and grey necklace (can't think of the stones right now, but I will..) What is my middle name. I haven't been able to watch much on the Food Network - it's too East Coast for me. At one point I was going to apply to be a contestant on the show you mentioned, but then I noticed that it would have required spending two weeks of February in NYC, and there was no way I could handle February in NY. I went the first week of December one year, and it was the coldest experience of my life. The temps were only around 30 degrees, but the chill from the winds coming down the avenues was far colder than anything else I had ever experienced. My style of cooking is also very different - I almost never use salt, and I see people adding salt to recipes with every step on that show - that turns me off to any of those recipes. I would like to see them do episodes with a ban on salt & pepper. I tend to use chilies more than black pepper, although pepper bothers me less than salt. I do watch Project Runway, however! Since I no longer do fashion design (and am too old), I never considered being a contestant on that show, however. Lars

Penny doesn't make friends easily, does she? I don't think she hurt Mary Beth, and MB was fully expecting Penny to mess her up in some way. Mary Beth comes out looking like the adult in that little duel.

Of the bottom two, there wasn't really and question, was there?

I think Mary Beth took the high rode and just made the best of the situation and did good considering she was basically a one woman show on that challenge.

Penny...it was shown early on that she was fairly slow when it came to food prep. I remember the food truck challenge where she was taking forever to prep her food. So I think in part, that's just how she works, but I do think that she did absolutely nothing to try to speed herself up to accomodate the fast paced challenge. And I think she did that on purpose.

Not sure if she was out to sabotage her, but I dont think she was out to help her.

I like Susie and hope she wins. She's been a favorite all along. I love her bubbly little personality and she's camera friendly.

I like Susie, too and would watch her program.
I think Mary Beth would have gone home even if Penny had worked faster.

Mary Beth may be out of the FNS competition, but I bet she ends up with a job of some kind with Food Network.

You can pick up the full episode on the Food Network website without the ads. So much more interesting. When I first saw Penny, I felt like a good slap someplace was needed. I don't care for anyone that self-centered, and felt that it not a good choice for Food Network to bring her back.

Mary Beth may not have been the best cook, but she is polished, warm and pretty. Considering the way she was dressed to face the judges, she might have been auditioning for something else in television.

Finely got to watch the show. Mary Beth was not really one of my favorites so I wasn't disappointed to watch her go. I do think Penny was trying to sabotage Mary Beth and I give credit to Mary Beth for handling herself so well under the circumstances. Actually I have problems with all three of the remaining contestants. Susie is maybe a little too bubbly for me. I think it would get on my nerves week after week after week. Vic should wear a long sleeve shirt. His tattoos turn me off. I like Jeff, however, I'm not sure I want to watch a show about sandwiches week after week. There I've said it. JMHO.
