The Homecoming

Hi everyone,

Well, the time has come for the last cast party of the year. Going to watch the show tomorrow night, and saw one of the cast members at Wal-Mart tonight. He mentioned about the cast party, and I never know when the one for the holiday show will be. So, after some quick thinking, I decided on making, what else, a batch of punch. On the fly, I thought of a peach punch, so I hope they like it. I'll puree a small bag of frozen peaches and a can of lemonade concentrate together, and put it in a re-sealable bowl. At the party, I'll mix the puree with Minute Maid Peach Punch and some white grape-peach juice. Simple, but hopefully tasty. The play is the original Walton's story, The Homecoming.

Also, I wanted to give a quick update on gram: She got out of HealthSouth today, but she is still refusing most foods (or has trouble keeping some down). We think it's her being stubborn, but who knows.

Went to a local craft show that is located at the local community center each year, and just like last year, most of the vendors were jewelry makers (one of which being a dear friend of mine who was a substitute teacher back in high school-she's a geologist by trade). It was wonderful to see her and mum and I ate supper there: I had two cheeseburgers and she had two sloppy joes and a bowl of macaroni salad.

Sounds like you and your mum had a good time at the craft show.

Now, that Peach Punch sounds very good. In fact, I'd enjoy a glass of it right now.

It does sound like a good time with your Mum at the craft show.

I'm glad your Grandma is out of the hospital, but I wish she were eating more. Maybe some of your yummy cooking will help her appetite! Even if it doesn't I'm sure she's happy to be back with family.

Good luck with that punch, I'm sure they'll love it.

Your narrative of Campbell's return, and the photos of JT with her friends had me in tears laughing. He has been a hoot on his trip and I'm so glad I got to 'meet' him (and get a load of goodies from the Junk Train). I am WAY behind in updating his album, but I do have all the photos saved and will get them in there sooner or later. I was worried because you hadn't posted in awhile, so I'm glad to hear a more positive update from you. Hope your gram improves, you enjoy the show, and your punch is a hit at the party!

Glad Gram is out of the hospital....and I hope food tastes good to her again soon.
I love the play, The Homecoming....you will enjoy it. The punch sounds lovely, but just a bit too sweet for me. I would substitute club soda for the white grape and peach juice to give it some sparkle and dilute some of the very sweet. After all that lemonade concentrate was meant to be diluted with water....so make that water sparkeling water.

Well, the peaches and lemonade concentrate have been pureed. I had to add a cup of sugar since the peaches were unsweetened and the lemonade concentrate made it bitterly sour. I hope it sweetens when sitting in the fridge and after I mix it up in the punch bowl at the theatre. I may or may not add Peach Schnapps to it, since the party is for the adults in the show and not the children. Looking forward to seeing the play and getting out of the house for the evening with my theatre family :). A lady playing one of the Baldwin sisters is ill, so our costumer (Jeanne) has to go on in her place (she's a wonderful actress, too).

The play, the cast party, and my punch were all wonderful :). Another season in the books. Now to face a long wait until spring lol. I didn't add any peach Schnapps to it, which turned out to be okay since there were some children/teens there. Going to file that recipe as a keeper :).

Easter Mills’ Whale Ale

In the late 1970’s, we went to Edgartown on Martha’s Vineyard, for Christmas. After the Christmas Eve service at St Andrew’s Episcopal Church, everyone walked a few houses down the street to Dr and Mrs Mills’ house – Mrs Mills was the church organist.. Various church members had brought cookies and other delicious foods to eat, and it was all served with a delicious hot punch that Mrs Mills called “Whale Ale”. After Christmas, I wrote Mrs Mills and asked her for the recipe, which she graciously sent to me.

1 quart boiling water

2 teaspoons Constant Comment Tea

1 tablespoon Tang

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1/2 cup sugar

1 pint Cranberry Juice Cocktail

Serve warm.

Makes 12 - 4 oz servings

This stuff is SO good and just the thing on a cold winter's night.

Sounds like a good time was had by all, as usual. I am so glad to hear your Gram has improved enough to come home. I am not remembering why she was in right now, but want to share with you that when my dad was in the hospital and rehab after his heart attacks, he couldn't eat. Everything tasted terrible to him. And every time he was in the hospital after that, he had the same issue. We suspect that since he was on a low salt diet the food had a special salt free/low salt seasoning blend used on it. He grew up with no salt in anything cooked, as my grandparents all had heart issues, and mom rarely cooked with much salt. So that seasoning made everything taste terrible, and the heart issues may also have contributed. It got to the point that the dr's in the hospital told us to bring him ANYTHING he thought he could eat. Forget the diet, what ever he wanted. And we could get him to eat a little that way, but even things he used to love, didn't taste good. He would ask for something, mom or I would fix it, he would take one bite, and would sit and shiver and shake until he got that bite down, and push the plate away. It would taste terrible to him.

So be aware that Gram may not be being stubborn, she may really have an issue with how things taste. I know it's frustrating, but may not be anything she can control, which will make it even harder for her, as she has already lost control of so much.
