It Fell Apart!!

First post ever, since I don't generally grow things, but I bought I'd be safe getting a snake plant! Unfortunately, I checked it today and one of the "stalks" just completely fell apart in my hand. I don't keep it moist, since it's in a lower light environment, and it doesn't look like rot - it's like the leaves just snapped off at the base

I'm super upset and don't want to lose the other side! What did I do wrong?!

What a bummer, so sorry! Is something in there munching on the base of the plant? Did it get too dry? Is it in the same pot in which it was purchased?

Definitely nothing munching on it, I can tell you that! And I don't think it got too dry, I usually water it with maybe a 1/4 cup of water ever other week? And it's in the same spot since when I brought it home - no changes :-(

This is why I was so surprised! Not sure how I should even take care of it now!

Mine fall apart if they're on the dry side. Before planting each container, I water it pretty well, cut the 2 front corners of the jug, and slide the whole thing into a nursery flat. I use a knife to cut that into chucks like brownies, and, if moist enough, very little falls apart. Then I plant with a spoon. I did that with my Black Prince Snapdragons on Saturday. When I went out Sunday, there was a whole square of them, 3 inches deep, roots to the bottom, lying on it's side on top of the soil in one of my beds. I had forgotten to plant that hunk! I stuck it in and watered, and today it looks fine. If I try to just scoop it right out of the jug with a spoon or trowel, it always falls apart. Karen

Baskets are hard to date....because every basket is hand made. There is no machine that will weave a basket. And, baskets have been made the same way for at least a couple of hundred years. Your basket is of split oak or ash as Clink suggested. Nothing I can see suggests any particular time period as for the way the basket is made. It appears that the painting was added, perhaps by the person who added the lining to make it into a sweing basket. Likely the date of the newspaper was a good guess, and the painting looks very un professional and primitive. Value? What someone will pay. I have seen similar items get the knock for as little as $15 and also seen things like that where the asking price was well over $100. It is likely worth a lot more to you that it would be to any stranger as just a nice old basket. It was your grandmother's sewing basket. Linda C

Thanks for telling us about your DD. Our DIL taught 8th Grade Math in a tough Chicago neighborhood for years until a transfer to a 'less-tough' one two years ago. I think your girl must be a strong person -- one who can meet this challenge and come out of it even stronger -- with your support. I don't remember where I heard this -- probably right here at the KT: A mother is only as happy as her least happy child. But that doesn't mean that Mom can fall apart! I'm glad to see from your posts that the immediate shock is passing, and you are girding for the battle ahead. Your DD is going to be *fine*. This bad news is life *threatening*, not a death sentence. The battle will be won. Look to the light. (And come here to unload fear and uncertainty.)

Lou, I have a similar recipe that I use for deviled crab, and I have also substituted canned tuna for the crab with good results as well. It is also baked and then broiled. I'll have to try the salmon recipe, although I really like Marilyn's fresh salmon cakes, and I had no problem with hers falling apart. I'll have to look at her recipe again. I have a feeling now that it was the type of bread I used, as rococogurl suggested. And the recipe does call for fresh bread crumbs as opposed to dried ones. The end result was still very good, even though it was difficult to get them to stick together. I'm considering adding a bit of potato starch to the insides to see if that will make them "stickier". Carol, I had saved your recipe before (it was one of only two that I had saved), but I neglected to look at it before I started. I'll try yours next time, as it looks really more like what I wanted, which is why I saved it in the first place. As for the recipe from the Anapolis native (I saved that one also) - what is regular mustard? My first thought is that it is dried, but it might mean prepared mustard. Crab meat is so cheap right now that I will be making more variations. The first batch of cakes I did not refrigerate, but the second batch had been refrigerated over night, and it had the same problem. I'm pretty sure it is the type of bread, which gave an excellent flavor, BTW. Thanks for all the help! Lars

Sorry for the loss Katie, a bummer indeed.

But pls. take a couple of pix showing us the entire plant, pot & all. From here that mix looks fairly water retentive, like it's not fast draining, which can be a problem for most succulents.

Any creatures (big dog, adventurous cats) that might have knocked into it causing the leaves to snap?

You could let those leaves dry several days (apply some cinnamon as antifungal & then shake off the excess) & then pot them in a small clay pot in shallow, fast draining mix to re-root them, so that they'll resume growing &/or make some new pups for ya. Wait several days BEFORE watering pls.

W/out knowing the size of the plants/pot it's hard to say whether 1/4 cup of water every other week suffices.

Is any part of the bottom there soft &/or mushy?

I have one of these in a 6ich pot and it hardly ever gets watered. Im sure it can go a month or so without watering. Especially in low light.

Looks like something broke them off. Kept too dark but still looks healthy from what I can see. I would cut back on the watering for now.
