Does Anybody Else Do As I Do? Moving Pots
Comments (26)Hi have you thought of keeping a log on the effectiveness of moving particularly frequently?? I grow mostly epiphytes and then mostly orchids . Almost all will grow in very dense shade in fact frequently better . What they don't do is flower well.lol Too much sun and they at least stress at worst sunburn. I keep a log as each plant goes into it's flowering period. How many flowers nd particularly what quality was produced in a given amount of foot candles. I have generally found moving them is counter productive they adapt to certain amounts of light so I never move more than twice a year. A log will give you a lot of info on what works. Even full sun plants that have been grown in shade will often croak when moved suddenly in full sun. I think the magic number is around 3 weeks of steadily increasing light before full exposure. So in my experience frequent moves are useless gary...See MoreDoes anybody have this grow shelf/mini green house thing?
Comments (7)I have the little greenhouse thingy that Namfon links to, above. I have been using it for about 5 seasons, and really find it to be helpful, as our last frost date is fairly late in the spring. I put mine in a corner in the garage until late April, using compact fluorescent bulbs in clamp-on shop lights. The lighting is not the greatest, but it seems to work. I just use the bulbs with the most lumens that I can find... especially if they are on sale. I also now put a very small heater/fan on the bottom shelf to keep the temperature at 70-75F. I have used incndescent light in the past as makeshift low-output heaters, as well. Through some creative stacking and by adding another shelf, I am able to have 8-12 flats, depending on how I arrange them. The unit is very light weight, which makes moving it outdoors when the Chicago winter finally ends quite easy. I usually park it against a fence for stability, in good sun, and then use tent stakes on the base to hold it down. The unit is also pretty easy to take apart for storage, which is great for my limited space. The only complaint I have is that the clear plastic can get very soft in the sunlight, and may tear easily at the seams & zippered areas. I have learned to be really careful when zipping/unzipping the 'door'. Duct tape works fine to repair the tears, though. If that is the same greenhouse thing you're talking about, it's a good & helpful thing. Well worth the $20 or so I paid for it way back when....See Moredoes anybody have a Julie Morss hosta??
Comments (10)Ohhhhh....this is a nice hosta!!! When I brought it home I cut a piece off for one of my friends at work, the other girl I can talk to about hostas and she's interested, she's getting hooked. I keep talking about them and showing and she's gotten 19 new ones so far this year because of me!! Hahahaha Now that I see what Julie Morss looks like I'm glad I accidently picked it up. I had never heard about it either until I picked it up. michelle...See MoreI have ordered an Instant Pot and am wonderful if any of you have ...
Comments (8)Congrats on your new toy! Perfect time of year for it. I have a Breville multicooker, which is similar, though the settings may be a bit different. I use it for beans and bean stews on slow cook. That means that I've attempted to sprout beans in it, but it only worked with cannelini beans. Mostly me being anxious about them disintegrating or getting mushy before they could sprout. Draining twice a day. Not plugged in or with the lid down (breathable cover). Just sitting in the wet trying to sprout. Then cook the beans on the bean setting, with the time adjusted as per the manual for the beans being soaked. Drained again, and while they're in the colander, brown the meat on the sear setting. I cut cheap(ish), lean beef into dice 1/2" tops because it want it to cook down to nothing. Set aside with the beans or in a bowl. Next, brown the onions on the sauté setting, and start the rest of the veg cooking once the onions are golden. Peppers, carrots, celery (mirepoix x trinity), plus anything I want to use up. Change to stew setting, add the beans and meat, diced tomatoes (canned or fresh), tomato paste or chili sauce, and some herbs and spices. I usually want to cook it half again as long as the base number, so I adjust that. When it's done and tastes "right", I use the reduce setting to steam off the excess water, to get a thick, rich stew. I've also caramelized onions in it, but it's going to take running the deodorizing recipe to fully remove the smell of that......See More- 9 years ago
