Let's sound off on rain barrels
Comments (17)I have a rain barrel I made in a workshop sponsored by my local soil conservation district. The barrel itself is a recycled plastic food barrel, and the spigot at the bottom will fit a garden hose. You can probably find info online how to make one. The barrel is completely closed other than the spigot and the overflow spout (no dipping watering can - but also no mosquito worries). I think it cost me $30 - which included the workshop and all supplies. We had so much rain in 2009 I hardly even used it, but I did use it in 2008 for watering things like roses and potted plants by hand. It does save some water, and I always feel like the plants prefer rainwater to chlorinated water from the hose. As far as saving money - well, not hardly! My whole water bill is only about $35 a month. Most of my plants don't get (or require) supplemental watering in this area unless there's a major drought anyway. But the plus is that for containers or those that do require extra water, the 50-gallon barrel will last me quite awhile after a rain. It does at least save a bit of water, if not much money....See MoreLet it rain!
Comments (7)Seil - I am so happy that you are finally able to enjoy some sunshine and warmth and your roses, I know it was a miserable winter for you! M - I wish you could send some rain to me and Kate! I think Kate would agree, we would be glad to send some sunshine and warmer weather your way! My roses haven't been hurt by the drought yet, but they could be if things don't turn around. It would be so nice if we could all just have the right balance of everything, that's not realistic though. Jim, thank you! The_bustopher - I know, it is frustrating. We've had hit and miss showers for awhile now, until recently they were totally missing my area. I'm not sure how far behind we are, but I would guess it's probably a similar amount to what yours is. Comments (13)Sorry it missed your trees Scott. Glad those who got useful rain received it. Did the OKC area have a heat burst or something? This morning the Mesonet was showing it about 10 degrees warmer than the rest of the state around 7 a.m? When I looked at it then, most of the state was in mid-70s, but OKC area was in mid-80s. I'll link the current temp map, but if you're seeing it later in the morning than when I posted it, the temp difference may not exist at that time. Here is a link that might be useful: Current Temperature Map...See Moredrinkmorewater
