December ritual. Deep cleaning. Am I the only one?
Comments (18)We've only been in this house a little over a year, and this year and last, we hosted Thanksgiving. So, November is deep cleaning month. DH even washed the windows this year! All of that deep cleaning turned up even more (!) repair projects. Turns out what I thought was a smudge on the bottom of one door frame is actually blistering paint from the wood rotting, and we found several windows that needed recaulking. So the "deep cleaning" just went on and on! It was really nice, though, to have everything perfectly clean. After Thanksgiving, we did the cleanup from that, and I put up the tree a few days later. We're planning to have guests off and on through the holidays, so all we've got to do now is just touch it up every week. Ditto that on the pet hair! We have cats. And we have mostly white trim and baseboards, white grout on the tile, AND we live in the country. At least we have a paved driveway, but most all of my neighbors have patures and crops, so the mowing creates a HUGE amount of dust and pollen. Some days, I feel like I could vaccuum every day and it wouldn't matter. I find that keeping down the clutter and little piles of stuff that DH and I can both generate spontaneously helps the most....See MoreAm I the only one who doesn't make a lot of goodies
Comments (24)I have pared down my baking significantly as far as cookies and treats go. When the kids were home I made tins and trays of cookies for bus drivers, teachers' lounges, older folks in our neighborhood who no longer baked for themselves, etc.. My group of 6 close women friends looked so forward to them because they didn't bake. Then the kids grew up and moved, we moved from the old neighborhood and all my women friends started South Beach, WW, or Sugar Busters diets and I didn't want to undermine their efforts. A couple years ago when my Mom was diagnosed w/ breast cancer (her 2nd time) right after T-Giving I was overwhelmed w/ her care over the holidays and just didn't do the baking that year. The world did not come to an end, and I discovered that I could choose to keep the tradition - or not. These days I bake when I choose to, when I have guests and when asked to bring dessert to a gathering. Like someone above noted, it's not like in years past when people really seemed to treasure the homemade baked gift. The cost in time and ingredients seems greater than in the past. I'm delighted to bake for those I know enjoy it, but I don't dole out the homemade treats the way I used to....See MoreI want my kitchen to come in color. Am I the only one?
Comments (46)In the last 2 years we've completely gutted and redone 4 bathrooms. They were all red and green saltillo tile and used to look cheap and cartoonish. The bathroom are now neutral, but far from boring. My theme for the new bathrooms was modern moroccan. I love color and have a red sofa, orange chairs, teal headboard, lots of color in upholstery and drapes, etc, but having the permanent items in the house be such strong/bossy colors is just too much....See MoreAm I the only one sick of............
Comments (43)Call them 'sappy' if you want to, but I love them! ! ! I love that they don't have all the foul language and sex most of today's movies seem to deem necessary. They are actually family oriented. Even many of today's so called family comedies are questionable as to suitability for kids, in my mind, anyhow. And Christmas in July? Why not? When the outdoor temps have 3 digits it's refreshing to sit back and watch cold, snowy movies. Just like I usually have some sort of snow and ice picture as my computer wallpaper. I love Christmas, too! The music, the movies, the decorations, and most of all, the true meaning behind it. That should not be reserved for a few days of the year, but practiced year around, IMHO. So some of you miss certain programs that you like, that's understandable. But surely there are other programs you could like, if you wanted to. As someone above said, it's 3 months. That means there are 9 months you get to watch your favorites, 3 times the amount of time you don't get to watch them. There are a few shows that I really look forward to seeing, that are not on in the summer, and I miss them, sure. But I find other stuff to watch, and eagerly anticipate their return in the fall. Makes them all the better! ! ! :^) Rusty...See More- 9 years ago
