Horse Poo...
Comments (8)From my limited experience with horse manure, it can be more weedy than ruminant manure, since a horse has a less 'intensive' digestive tract (only one stomach). So, if you put it down 'raw', you may be fighting weeds all through the growing season, like I did. If it's possible in your climate, I would pile it up and let it compost, all by itself. Don't worry about adding other stuff. When there's a break in the weather, scrape off all the outside first stuff and put it on the bottom of another pile right beside the original pile, and just kind of turn it inside-out. If you can do this several times, the heat should either sprout or kill the seeds, and the nitrogen level should be high enough to be of value, but not turning into ammonia and gassing out into the atmosphere (waste). I would cover it with a tarp right from the beginning. This would help prevent rain and snow from leaching all the 'goods' out, but conserve useful moisture and help retain some heat. If you could make a pile about 3 ft tall and wide (at least), I'm pretty sure it will continue composting all through the winter, esp if you turn it a couple of times to incorporate air into it. If you turn it and it doesn't heat up again (or not very much), it's done. You'll have a better soil additive than just adding it fresh. Also, just in case there is any issue with pathogens, know that COMPLETE PATHOGEN DESTRUCTION is guaranteed by arriving at a temperature of 62C (143.6F) for one hour, 50C (122F) for one day, 46C (114.8F) for one week or 43C (109.4F) for one month. Since the center will be the hottest and the surface the coolest, that is a good reason to try to turn the pile a couple of times, so all parts have a chance to hit the high temperatures. Comments (11)I havent used horse manure except for composted, but have a large deer herd in my city that hangs out at night in a park at the end of my street. Several times a year I put on my plastic gloves, and fill up several 1 gallon baggies with their droppings. In the fall, after the last harvest I spread some of these across the veggie garden to break down over the winter months. Several other bags get mixed into my container mixes that I pile up in a seperate pile to break down further, and I use these for the base mix for the next years container peppers and tomatoes. Never had any problems with either. I was thinking about fresh horse or cow manures, but canned the idea due to the thoughts of fighting weed and grass regrowing. When I lived on a farm and wanted to put a section of planted ground back to rest for three or more years, we hot fenced it and put cattle, ours, neighbors, into it for a week. The resulting manures that were deposited started the grasses to regrow and stopped any erosion. TiMo...See MoreNeed Poo and Compost Badly
Comments (5)Gardenville just raised (in the last month) the price of lavasand by almost twice so it was expensive to buy wholesale for a project like this now it is downright costly and forget retail. I am not going to carry it anymore and have switched to Nature's Guide which is 50% less at wholesale so is still expensive but not nearly as bad as GV. I think there a few places that you can get the expanded shale up there (LETCO) I believe is the Dallas area supplier for bulk. Yes, organic matter is going to be your most cost effective option. Buy it by the truckload 12-15 yds. at a time to be most cost effective for the trucking charge. It will take several truck loads to do 2 acres so start with a smaller area that you want to do first and work your way out. Areas that you want to landscape this year would be my priority. Good Luck and Happy Planting David. P.S. I second checking Craiglist regularly and see if you can acquire portions of your needs there...See MoreMost Annoying TV Commercials?
Comments (41)Regarding the bear and the toilet paper ... ... remember a couple of years ago that someone showed a comic illustration of a bear and a bunny, where we saw a rear view of both while they were going poo ... ... and the bear asks the bunny whether it bothers him (I imagine they're both "him"s) when he gets poo on his fur, and but bunny says, "No" ... ... so the bear grabs the bunny and uses him the fulfill the toilet paper function?? I think that it may have been Moni who posted it, for I came on a couple of days later when I wanted to print it to say that it had disappeared, so the original poster sent a copy directly to me. If you read this, original poster, ... thanks again: I enjoyed that one and passed it around ... even sprung for the 15 cents to have it done colourfully. What mainly gets to me about the inane commercials is that they can't wait ten minutes to play the same one over again. Plus ... I agree: when you find one *really* annoying ... write the sponsor to share your thoughts with them. ole joyfuelled ... with a bit o' help occasionally from funny cartoons...See Morekathyg_in_mi
