Latex pillows care?

My latex pillows never got wet in the flood I made sure they were up on top of the bed. However they were packed in big plastic bags and put in the storage containers along with everything else. Today we found the bag they were in with some sheets and opened the bag. The musty smell was terrible. I took them out of the double zip fabric liners they were in to look at the pillows. Mine looks normal but has a couple of small discoloration spots and smells terrible. Husband's was horrible totally discolored and gross, must be trashed. I am wondering if anyone has tried washing one on hand wash cycle cold in the machine? I read online some people wash theirs every 6 months. One lady has done so for 4 years.

I don't know what the outcome is going to be but I just now put my pillow in on that setting and will just do air dry. I mean I will have to trash it otherwise so might as well give it a try.

Any results to report? I sure hate losing those, they are not cheap! I will never ever use those storage containers for anything again. I lost more in them than I did the flood. I wanted to use storage rooms in climate controlled buildings but my vote lost. Very unfortunate decision.

Do you think it could be mold? I'm just asking because if I thought that might be mold, there's no way I'd lay my head on it.

If it smells bad and could be mold, I do not believe that hand washing will remove the spores.

Sure, we got ours at Sleepez.com, linked below to the page of the closest match to ours, 100% Natural Talaylay queen, split w/3 layers. They ship from Arizona and it was delivered in 2 boxes. We chose to swap out one of the layers to make my husbands side a bit more firm and they did everything they promised they would and were extremely nice about it. The owner returned calls promptly and over all, we had a really good experience with the company. Pros: It's organic and environmentally friendly, the latex is imported but moulded in the US. Customizable to meet each persons firmness needs. Long life span. Resistent to dust mites. Cons: Depending on someones sleep pattern the layers can shift a little and may occassionally need to be realigned. Note: The return policy has changed some since we bought ours, be sure you read it as it may be something to consider. After years of buying one pillow top mattress after another with the same terrible results, we were desparate to find something that would accomodate both of us (we have very different sleeping needs) and this has been the perfect option. amck, the Natura pillows are Canadian sizes, so they're different from American standard and queen size pillows. The standard Natura is quite small. I have the standard because I ordered it first because I like American standard pillows better than queen, but it was so small, like a kid's pillow, so I have that on the sofa and I ordered a queen for the bed. I think everyone here who bought Naturas got the queen size. You'll need queen cases for it as well. The standards will be much too small.

I know this is an old thread but I thought I'd add my 2 cents' worth anyway! I've done a lot of upholstery, both for myself and professionally. I've redone a lot of furniture from the 50s and 60s when foam became a popular replacement in the furniture industry for innerspring cushions. Since then, urethane foam has taken over because it's much less expensive to produce. HOWEVER...the two are not even comparable as far as comfort OR durability, as others have stated here. Urethane feels great at first but even the best quality urethane foam will develop permanent hollows over time. And even when new, it compresses in totally different way than does latex. If you push your finger into it, the compression has a wide diameter. It's like a wide angle cone. But when you push your finger into latex foam, the cone of depression is quite narrow. This matters to the human body because latex allows your wide points to sink in while still giving your narrower points the same support. Urethane foam gives preferential treatment to your wide points with not much left over for the rest of you. Also, the longer you sit on a urethane cushion, the longer it takes for it to rebound, and the more it gets compressed. Latex foam is much more resilient and it will retain the same resiliency for years and years. It has a bouncier feel, but not like an air mattress--it's hard to describe! Most upholsterers will claim that urethane foam is equally comfortable, and it IS comfortable at first, but that won't last. Upholsterers use it because it's inexpensive and doesn't eat into their profit margins. In an industry where it's becoming the norm to just buy a new sofa rather than get the old one reupholstered, this is a very real and very important factor for upholsterers who want to stay in business! But still...I think most people would go for latex in a blind sit test. I am just now ordering foam replacement cushions for a sofa, totaling 82" in length, and my total comes to around $450 with shipping across the country. (I wish there was a supplier on the east coast but so far I haven't found one.) This is from Foamorder dot com. And yes, it's still WAY more money than urethane foam would be, but I'm sick and tired of the discomfort of the old cushions and I know that new urethane cushions would only be a temporary fix. I've gotton other latex foam from this place, including my mattress, and have been pretty happy overall. Last time I checked, the few other places that sell latex foam cushions online were way higher in prices than this place for pretty much the same thing. Always shop around!

I am going to buy 2 new ones.

But it turns out that you most definitely can wash them. I put a king size pillow in my Samsung front loader, set on hand wash cold medium spin. I put odor ban liquid in the dispenser drawer no detergent. Odor ban kills pretty much anything including all bacteria, mold, viruses including the aids virus so that should have killed anything on it. I ran a second spin only cycle on medium. Then I put 2 towels in the dryer with the pillow and put it on air fluff no heat for 20 minutes. It came out spotless and smelling clean. But I don't want to trust it especially when I have asthma.

So now we know you can wash latex pillows!

I got a great price for black Friday on 2 new latex pillows(Woo-hoo) and didn't have to get up early (although I was awake and shopping at 2 am in my warm bed) or fight crowds because I ordered them online. I must say that I love that they now offer the same deals online for black Friday because being in a wheelchair it's very dangerous to try to fight the crowd.

Also a positive for latex is that it is antimicrobial and very difficult for anything to live in or on it those are some of the properties that make it such a great choice for people with allergies.
