?s about the Apple Upgrade Program

I would like to get an iPhone 7 now but with next year's unit expected to be so much different (if not better), I am undecided on how to proceed.

I could continue to live with the flip phone. Or purchase a model 7. Or use the Upgrade Program instead of buying a model 7.

But I am confused about many things, including how they make it work after 6 months though. Do I pay a monthly "rent" and then on month 6, I pay an amt equal to 7 times the monthly payments? Which totals 12 months of payments?

If the above is correct, I was actually thinking of 'renting' the SE instead (since the model 8 will be here 'soon' and renting it will be cheaper than renting a 7). And then, when the Model 8 comes out, then I would switch from renting the SE to the 8. But I am not sure if the program would allow me to replace the SE and move up to the 8 (obviously paying more monthly for the 8).

Any better or cheaper options?

TIA

Luis-

I suggest you talk to your present cell phone carrier and/or Apple. There are too many variables here and there could be different options and costs depending on how you go; and the upgrade programs seem to change with some frequency as well. If you rely on this forum for answers, you could end up getting committed to something that might not meet your needs, or cost more than you expected.

I recently upgraded my iPhone 6 to an iPhone 7 Plus through my carrier, T-Mobile. And the terms they offered me were different from other programs I've seen floating around. Even though the upgrade process seemed fairly straightforward, I had a couple of long discussions with their service reps to be sure I understood exactly how the process worked and how my bill would change.

Well, I just wanted to see if I had understood how things 'typically' worked. Like you, I am sure I would end up in very long discussions with reps too. Ha.

But I was told that doing it your way, getting the phone via a cell phone carrier, that gets me a locked computer and I did not want to be locked to any carrier. That way I could change carriers at will if the carrier increased prices or changed terms.

Harvestman: I usually don't get into a lot of detail and technical exceptions when trying to explain insect or disease control to a novice grower. Rather than risk confusing people and overloading the circuits with exceptions like post-infection activity of certain commercially available fungicides, I try to stick to a general rule. In the case of CAR and the backyard grower, I believe the best rule is: Have the fungicide on when the disease arrives. I know this is true of Ferbam, which is probably a moot point since it is now very difficult to find, but also recommend it for Immunox. Weather conditions in early spring will always affect the ability to spray, but in the case of a systemic like Immunox, post-spray rains may not affect the control of the chemical to the same degree. I do use a sticker-spreader with Ferbam, which I believe helps it cling a little longer, but doesn't protect new growth. This season I did three sprays with Ferbam in the month of April because I had three decent days to spray, and one more in early May. This may sound excessive, but after the CAR disaster I experienced in the '08 season (due primarily to poopy weather that prevented spraying) I was taking no chances. Even with this relatively high level of spray care, I still had 5-10% damage from CAR on the apples of some varieties -- and one of them was Goldrush, a genetically resistant variety. This level of damage to the fruit is not a problem for me, since at thinning time the apples showing even a touch of CAR on the calyx are the first to come off. This leaves plenty of healthy apples, but it irritates me when the affected apple in a cluster happens to be the big, fat king fruit. I don't worry too much about a few little CAR spots on the leaves. My concern is with the apples themselves. The '08 season, when damage on some trees reached around 90%, may have left me a little shellshocked. Didn't even have enough apples to press cider, and barely made the applesauce quota. This season is much, much better, although I am pretty sure the high level of infection last season actually knocked out a lot of interior fruiting spurs, since I am having a lot more apples on the tips this season. when you go to the windows update site choose custom and let it scan your pc, then do ONLY the ones it lists as critical updates, those that are not critical are optional and can be left alone. but you do want to do any critical updates. However as zep said if you have IE6 on your pc and you do not want to upgrade to IE7 then do not choose that one. BUT if you see critical updates that are for IE you do need to get those because whether you use IE or not if there is a security vulnerability that they put a patch out for if you do not patch that then just having the vulnerability on your pc could put you at risk. Anytime you have programs on your pc that you see security updates for you need to get those even if you never use the program, as long as it is on your pc and has a hole in it then there are those out there that can use that hole to get to you, many times from visiting a compromised website where a script was written to find and use that hole. The flash is a perfect example, that clickjacking which I had posted about a while ago uses a vulnerability in the older flash to install malware on your pc, so keeping the flash updated is pretty critical right now. And with flash you have to do the update to all browsers so if you use firefox and IE you must go get the specific updates for each one and install them. Secunia is a very beneficial tool.

A follow up: I am extremely happy with this wireless Logitech DJ. Piece of cake to set up. No problem from the Denon to the slave amp and beyond. Very, very nice remote. I am amazed that I can use the remote to select any song and hear it anywhere around the house (speakers in kitchen, and outside are on same system). WOW. Easy to navigate my 4000+ song library by artist, genre, album, etc. Even plays existing playlists with option to edit playlists on the fly. All with the remote. Very cool. I do think the USB connecting wires could be longer, especially because of the directives to place the streaming unit X feet away from the desktop computer AND from any existing router (sheesh, then give me more than 5 feet to work with already!). I had to relocate some things to eliminate noise. And I get a rare hiccup in the stream. No biggie. Rearranging my USB connections to make this puppy a direct connect out the desktop (rather than hub) may help that. The negatives (short wireless range and only one receiver at a time) are not factors for me in my setup. So it is perfect for what I wanted. Getting Windows Media Player to learn and save Live365 Internet stations was a little dicey for me. Trying to merge Live365 Internet radio (new to me) and the Logitech DJ (also new to me) with the Windows Media Player was a stumble. Had to save stations one by one. But I now can scroll through 27 saved stations on the remote - from Mississippi blues to Reggae dancehall to Celtic traditional to South American classical guitar. Thousands more out there to add if I want. Wonderful. Fabulous. I'm loving this! Almost happy the last local classical radio station folded and led me into this journey. Best $89 I've spent in a long, long time. And thank you Steve for your help.

I think that the need to drain down to zero has been obviated by new battery technology. And, in fact, it is preferable not to fully discharge your batteries. to wit: Similar to a mechanical device that wears out faster with heavy use, so also does the depth of discharge (DoD) determine the cycle count. The shorter the discharge (low DoD), the longer the battery will last. If at all possible, avoid full discharges and charge the battery more often between uses. Partial discharge on Li-ion is fine. There is no memory and the battery does not need periodic full discharge cycles to prolong life. Do note this last bit below, which may confuse the issue. Perform Shallow Discharges; Avoid Frequent Full Discharges Old NiMH and NiCd batteries had a “memory effect” and had to be completely discharged from 100% to 0% to keep their capacity. Modern devices use Lithium Ion batteries, which work differently and have no memory effect. In fact, completely discharging a Li-ion battery is bad for it. You should try to perform shallow discharges — discharge the battery to something like 40-70% before recharging it, for example. Try to never let your battery go below 20% except in rare circumstances. If you were to discharge your battery to 50%, recharge it, and then discharge it to 50% again, that would count as a single “cycle” with modern Li-ion batteries. You don’t need to worry about performing shallow charges. There’s only one problem that shallow discharges can cause. Laptops can get a bit confused by shallow discharges and may show you wrong estimates for how long your device’s battery will last. Laptop manufacturers recommend you perform a full discharge about once per month to help calibrate the device’s battery time estimate.

As I said, there are many options. You really do need to talk with Apple:

Unlocking T-Mobile phone

You could buy an 'unlocked phone' from Apple but you will pay full price for the phone. I wouldn't do that. I'd rather finance it through Verizon (my cell carrier) and I can then update the phone a year later. I think you need to hold the phone a year, but I could be wrong.

Its really up to you. I don't know why you wouldn't just finance it through your carrier. Then you aren't laying out a ton of money. The phone is probably $800.00 or more.

I update my phone every two years. I have a 6+ which I will update when the 8 comes out. Verizon is the best carrier in my area.

There would be no reason to switch. I would rather pay more for good service than price. But I think ATT and Verizon are about the same

Sprint and the smaller carriers are terrible in terms of service in my location, Florida.

Q. But won't the phone be locked to one of those carriers if I finance through those carriers?
jane__ny

Not if you buy the phone outright. If you finance the phone you are locked to the carrier for two years. My point is it doesn't make sense to me to buy outright. Get a phone from the best carrier in your area and pay the phone off over the two years.

Just my opinion.

Visited an ATT Store and left with sticker shock after seeing monthly payments almost double! Currently, my 3 flip phones cost about $65 and if I changed one phone, spread the cost of a theoretical smartphone monthly for 2 years and used 1G data plan (cheapest), I would end up paying about $115 (taxes not included in any of this). I feel like ATT is the only winners in this.
